The one pocket match with Scott Vs Alex was going to charhe 10 dollars @ the door and
due to complaints from regulars, they have decided not to charge.

I found this out on Scott's FB page. What are you guys thoughts on this?

I personally would have happily paid to see this if it were close enough but

evidentally a lot of people would not. Any thoughts from you all? Is this really

good for our beloved sport? I think NOT!!

Well...

If I'm a regular, I don't want to pay to get into the place I frequent.
If I'm joe blow from out of town and came for the one pocket match, I'd expect to pay.

Just like I'm not paying a cover charge to see a band I don't care for, at a bar that I go to daily.

The room owner can either lose regular business or lose cover charge money. You can't have both.

Of course I would and so would they. It's too bad I can't complain about other events and get the promoter to decide to give it for free.

Pool promoters need to believe more in their product imo. $10 is nothing.

What he said.

There are plenty of bars that charge a cover on certain nights of the week/certain events. Tons of bars around my area charge cover for fight nights. Just the way it is. No chance I would go complain to the owner that I'm not interested in the fight, so I shouldn't have to pay the cover.

Chances are that the regulars all knew this event was coming up so to complain once its there seems silly. I'm also assuming the owner expected to lose some revenue from table rentals as this event was being played so he probably wanted to recoup some of those losses. If regulars were complaining I'm guessing once they got in for free most of them will have sat there and watched the match and contributed very little to the business.
If this was the case the owner probably just lost money and will likely not have much incentive to run another event like this in the future. Unless he loves pool (hates money) that much.
It makes perfect sense to charge a cover for special events and I would think most fans of the game would be happy to pay $10 to see some of the best in the world. Apparently I would be wrong.

Interesting situation. Good Timez and all other Vegas pool rooms have a daily rate between $8 and $10. When the daily rate ends around 6 PM, the rooms empty. The same players won't pay the regular rate of around $5 per hour. This appears to be the same situation. If I remember correctly, Good Timez has two entrances. One for the pool room. One for the bar / restaurant.

Frankly, I'd charge $15 per person. Part of the deal would be a free hour of pool during the event. In addition, one "free" alcoholic beverage or two soda drinks. Great value to the customer. Some income for the pool room who will lose table time. With the streaming of the event, several tables in the rear will have to be shut down. Come on, give Ted and Gary a break! Unless of course Pool Action TV and the featured players are helping to offset the loss of revenue. JMHO.

Ah the water drinking crowd-cant lose their business!

If i owned a room i might charge 10 everyday. The 10 would be a credit to spend on anything including table time. I know a room that was ruined by free loaders spending the whole day not only not spending anything but swiping chips etc also. Eventually good people were afraid to go in there. It's finished and for sale cheap.

Im in business-If you cant afford 10-I dont need you.

Of course I'd pay $10-20 to see Alex and Scott live. Live is an entirely different experience from video.

How many regulars vs. visitors are we talking about?

I'd charge the visitors a $10-20 entry/cover but waive it for my regulars. I'd certainly understand if an owner charged me (as a visitor) but let the regular in for free. In fact, I'd be impressed that he knew who his regulars were. Also, it's a good way for the owner to say "I appreciate your business."

I can't believe this is even a topic of discussion. nits nits nits.

how much would your local golf course charge if tiger and rory came to your course?

the 2 best one pocket players on the planet and you are complaining about having to pay??? come on people...

haha, yes. the same ones who flip out when the free coffee is burnt.

I would spend 10 bucks. I don't pass any judgement to the regulars who complained though. They have every right, especially if they are the true regulars that have already spent a couple thousand dollars on drinks this year. I hate when people charge me a cover fee to come in their establishment to spend more money....

"At the door" just to get in the place I can see how they would complain. Most would probably just float around the room half watching and wanting to play pool themselves. Any reason the owner can't have the 1P match off to the side cordoned off with seats surrounding it that people can pay for? And if you don't want to pay, then you get to stand on your toes from the other half of the room and watch from there.

Last Friday, an acquaintance of mind gave a performance at a local bar. The bar lounge charges $500 for the venue, because its a prime night. The other alternative was to have 25 people pay a $20 cover charge. Lefty gave his performance, and 44 of his friends showed up in support. A fast food combo from McDonalds these days are approaching $10.

I have two points to make. A poolhalls are a business, just like bar. They need to make money to keep the doors open. If you can afford to eat at McDonalds, but not willing to pay the same, then you're the type of customer who will help close a poolhall.

Surround one section with curtains/hanging tarps. No pay, play pool or whatever in the section you can't see the match for free. Johnnyt

Anything Good is worth paying for

Anything Good is worth paying for. I would consider it an honor to support the place having such a match just to be able to have a seat near the action would be awesome. Its not often you get to see a match up like that. If haters want to hate then they can figure out another way. We need to support our sport and that means returning money to rooms else they close. I feel the same way about Gold Membership here.

First off, One Pocket is a game, not a sport.
Second, yes I would pay to see those two play, and probably most any of the top players under the right circumstances.
If they were playing at my local sports bar and grill I would climb through the bathroom window. Ten bucks is ten bucks.
Also, here's a trick for getting in to those places for free. You and your girlfriend, or boyfriend (who am I to judge) go arm-in-arm through the front door walking backwards. The guy at the gate will think you're leaving and you'll be in like Flynn. It always worked for me sometimes. :)

Years ago I was out of town at a trade school for two weeks and I visited a local poolroom. I ended up playing the owner and when we finished, he asked me if I wouldn't buy a ticket for $10 to Mike Massey's trick shot show that would be the next evening. I told him no. I've played pool for hours with Mike and seen his show a few times, but I flipped the guy a $20 and told him to give 2 tickets to local players that seemed like they might enjoy it.

To answer the question directly, yes I'd pay to watch those two players play.
