I haven't posted in quite some time, but I saw something tonight that really didn't sit well with me, so I want to vent a little to somebody. I was in the pool room after a break of a couple months, when I looked over and saw this guy I know playing with the Joss cue I feel is one of the nicest Joss cues ever made...The one used in "The Color of Money" by Tom Cruise as "Vincent". He was playing with it for a little bit, miscued or something, and decided to shape his tip. Ok, that's fair enough because you need to keep up on your tip. He puts the shaper on the floor between his feet, turns the cue upside-down, and shapes his tip like he was a boyscout starting a campfire!  I HAD TO quit playing MY game and watch this sad display of cue care. I cried inside while seeing this, and had to turn away. Wouldn't it be nice if just people who were going to respect their equipment could buy nice cues? I know that could never be, but it would be nice that if someone was going to spend nice money on a nice cue, they would at least respect it. I have seen many nice cues treated badly, but this one hit home with me...OK, my rant is done...have a nice night! lol

There is that one shaper that is supposed to be used that way. However, you're not supposed to apply downward pressure, only turning the cue left and right and letting gravity do the work.

There is worse!

That's a heck of a lot better then keeping it upright and rolling the cue with his shoe. :yikes: :withstupid:

Are you sure it was not a J&J copy of the Joss cue?:(

I can't see how this is a problem..... I would hardly call it mistreating the cue.

Shape your Tip

I don't see any thing wrong with this method for shaping your tip, I've seen it done this way from time to time, if done gently it will round your tip perfectly!

If the guy was using the "Cube" crystal tip shaper, then both his hands should be broken. You've got about a 50/50 chance of getting a Cube that has some crystals that will jack your tip up....or even your ferrule.

If he was using the "Ultimate Tip Tool", then there is nothing wrong with what he was doing. This tool uses sandpaper and gives great shape to the tip.

I do this with the ultimate tip tool using the weight of the cue only,no downward force at all. It's easier to keep the cue straight that way . I really try to shape my tip at home on a lathe but had no problems doing it this way at the pool hall.

I dont understand what the problem is..... Its his cue, he can do with it as he pleases assuming hes not damaging your stuff or the pool halls stuff.

Nothing wrong with feeling the way you feel. It repulses you that somebody fortunate enough to own such a cue is so uncommitted to mantaining it.

Nonetheless, we are all careless, at times, in maintaining our own belongings. Who hasn't slammed there own house or car door shut on occasion? Or driven too many miles without having a tuneup? Or not backed up the hard drive on their computer? Some abuse their own equipment and other belongings out of ignorance, others out of laziness, but what business of ours is it? It's their property, and with few exceptions, they may do as they please with it.

I've done this myself, at home. I don't think I've done it in public;)

Back when I was in the Marines, I would sneak out side the bars and do this on the concrete to a house cue to scuff up the tip.:grin::grin:

That's how i scuff my tips when i'm at home. something wrong with it? you're only scuffing the leather tip

I use a nickel shaper that way and then do the finishing touches with my hands. I wouldn't use a cue cube that way, but then again I'd never buy a cue cube.

I thought that was the AF and Army way. I figured Marines would just rub it on some stubble.

We weren't allowed to have stubble and there were no hookers around at the time.
