WPA Threatens Ban on Filipino Players

Instead of addressing the root of the boycott by the top Filipino players on all Makabenta-related tournaments, BSCP has once again adopted the eye for an eye stance.

The BSCP, Philippine country representative of the WPA, has announced that the Filipino players who are going to join the BMPAP-organized tournament next week will be banned from joining WPA sanctioned tournaments.

http://www.abs-cbnnews.com/sports/11/08/08/villar-cup-players-face-ban-bscp-wpa-tourneys

In other words, WPA is going to ban the following players (among others):

Efren "Bata" Reyes, Francisco Bustamante, Alex Pagulayan, Ronato Alcano, Dennis Orcollo, Roberto Gomez, Gandy Valle, Lee Van Corteza, Ramil Gallego, Rodolfo Luat, Warren Kiamko, Antonio Lining

Aside from that, the foreign players who will be joining will also be banned from WPA sanctioned tournaments.

In past experiences where the BSCP had used its prerogative to select players to fill in quotas for international tournaments, the organizers had directly gotten in touch with BMPAP in ignoring the abuse of BSCP. This is because they would much rather have the top Filipino players put credibility in their tournaments than appear to be credible because of the WPA.

In this fairly stupid decision to exert power after delaying payment in the sanctioned WTB, the WPA is risking a major mutiny from the professional players of the world who have had enough of this stupidity.

The time has come. The Constitution of the WPA is medieval and they have proven lately that they are now obsolete because pool is mainly a professional sport, and these amateurs (under the International Olympic Committee) are getting in the way of the professionals!

What? Are they serious? Isn't that Villar guy a senator? That means Makabenta is in big trouble.

I don't see him putting on many more tournaments...if any. Sounds like a last ditch effort to me. Who's going to watch a tournament that bans some of the best and favorite players in she world. Johnnyt

If he can keep the tournies going without these guys, Id be surprised but if he can last 2-3 years, especially in the Phillipines, new talent will produce many new stars. It sure is a long shot though.

PS_ I also remember a similar stance when the IPT developed and Everyone who played was gonna be banned for one year by the WPA/APBU?.

Efren came out and said "I dont care if they ban me for three years, Im gonna play where the money is". I dont really recall how this was resolved-perhaps the WPA quietly whisperd "Nevermnd" somewhere along the way.

You know, I have always believed that you can tell a person by the way he plays pool. 99% of the BSCP directors cannot run out a table of 9-balls. Maybe 2 or 3 balls. Why? Because they see only the object ball and the pocket.

That says a lot in real life perspectives.

Never mind presidentiable Senator Villar. The repercussion here is the WPA losing its credibility. Makabenta and the whole of BSCP are goners, and not unless WPA puts an end to this, they're taking WPA down with them.

Did they mention anything about when the players will be paid from the WTBC? Some people might consider that important too, since they did sanction that event.

Manny Villar is Senate President.

Wow... that is quite incredible...

So, for the Norwegian guy playing, will he not be able to play Norwegian tournaments, since NB is the organisers of those tournaments, and NB is member of EPBF/WPA?

I know Chris doesn't care, even though he is 5 times Norwegian Champion. As he said when me and him played the Villards Cup in Cebu in July: "If they ban me I will only have to travel more to Philippines to play tournaments. I can't see how that's a loss for me"

I don't see anything in this article that says the WPA backs this statement of bans. Nor is there anything that says anything about foreign players being banned from WPA events for participating.

This would go against the WPA's bylaws if they tried to ban domestic or foreign players for playing in internal non-WPA sanctioned events. The WPA has no right to ask for a sanctioning fee from the Villar Cup and as such has no jurisdiction over the players who participate.

I don't think it's fair to accuse the WPA of anything based on this article. It sounds like a press statement from the BSCP that insinuates WPA approval. Probably without actual approval of the WPA to make those statements.

That's pretty much sums up the BSCP's MO, no surprise...

Now this, if true, just sucks to high heavens.....

Last i heard, Villar was booted out of the senate presidency....I wonder if the senate hearings involving makabenta et. al. were finally resolved?

On a more positive note, a recent philippine survey places villar at the top of the list of possible philippine presidents, right next to the current VP, a former news anchor. if things go villar's way, makabenta would soon (2010) have to go against the president of the republic!
