WPBA Colorado Classic in Ignacio??!!

Anne is on vacation in Paris. I'm sure that is why you haven't heard back from her on this. I can't remember when she said she would be back. Sorry! Maybe try contacting one of the other board members. I believe there are links to their email on the WPBA website.

Sarah

Thanks Sarah, I'll be sure to try that.

Sarah...That's a nice picture of you, in your avitar! Are you playing in this event?

Too bad it's not the same weekend as the Four Corners "motorcycle rally".

"Don't go down to Toby's Jug, they'll rape your cue and steal your girl."

Yes Scott, I am playing this event. It will be my first trip to Colorado. I am thinking of driving out just so I can get the full experience.

The only way to take in Colorado is to take your time....
I spent 12-13 years running the backroads and and running around the backcountry in a saddle, and still only touched part of the state, even though I pretty much covered every road out there...lol And alot of places no where near a road.
But hitting the Million Dollar Highway is worth driving out there by itself....Durango has a ton to offer close by, Gunnison and the Black Canyon, Telluride was good enough to get a song by Tim Magraw, there's just too much to try and take in..... and worth the drive.
I'm looking forward to getting back out there again, and getting there when the Aspens are changing makes it even better!
And Durango is nothing if not a great little partying college town with a ton of stuff to do outside-

Add in some great poolplaying to the mix, and you've come up with the perfect trip!

To put the question of why not Denver into perspective. In 1995 the WPBA came to Denver and the tournament was hosted at the Tivoli in downtown Denver. Now this was during a very strong period of billiards here in Denver and the BEST we could manage was about 300 people showing up. We had all the top names but in the end the event lost money. Haven't seen the ladies since.
I live here in Denver but can't see driving down to the 4 corners area to see the ladies again. Maybe if I was a gambler, but I would rather catch the ladies some place like Florida or the like. More to see than just the tournament.

More to see than "just" the tournament in Ignacio! Purgatory resort is 25 minutes away and has cheap rates right now, and Durango has enough as it is to do if you get "pooled"out.... When I went in July to the WPBA Open, it was hard to drag me away to even go find food most of the time....The ladies deserve a little more credit than being a diversion on a roadtrip to the mountains.
If you had seen some of the matches at Galveston between some of them, you'd definately want to see the grudge matches in Colorado!
That alone is worth the drive for me!
Hope to see some of you, if not many of you ,there!
I'll be there over the weekend, and should arrive sometime later on Friday-

Try kayak.com
I checked expedia and others to find good rates, and believe it or not, you can stay at the Purgatory resort for a really good price. At least you could checking prices last week.
About 25 miles to Ignacio but cheaper, and there were a few other places cheaper than $88 a night with availability when I last checked.
I got a call from Sky Ute and they now have a couple of open rooms for the whole tournament, so I'm probably just going to shell out the difference and save time and driving so that I can just enjoy the tournament.
Anyone that's going, give me a call when you get there, and lets get the AZ party started!lol
Quietly of course, wouldn't want any of the girls to lob a cueball at someone....

WPBA CO Classic

Hello all you AZ'rs!
Firstly, I know it's been awhile since I've posted replies. As Sarah had stated in this thread, I took a much needed and absolutely fantastic vacation with my guy to Paris. I love Paris and enjoyed the opportunity to show him the sights of the city (it was his first time there). Plus we visited my parent's and that's always a good thing :)

We have three events basically back to back - Colorado, Oreon and Florida... keeping all those ducks in a row takes a lot of work thus I've had my head buried in paperwork!

We're in Colorado now and I hope any of you that plan to come to Ignacio and watch our event come find me and say hello! I'll be the tall, short-haired brunette running around like bugs bunny the mad symphony conductor (or I'll be sitting in front of my laptop at the T.D.'s table)
C'mon and say hi!

Now, to answer some of you grouches on here about the WPBA's choice of locations (smile it's not THAT bad!). Cristina had it right - Our Site Host's pay a Site Sponsor fee to host a WPBA Tournament. We pay for our own production costs so that you, the fans, can watch our events on ESPN. It ain't cheap and that money has to come from somewhere and part of that comes from the Site Sponsors :) In addition, we do have venue size requirements... has to be big enough for the table set up for the non televised portion of the tournament and have the right stuff for the TV taping, too!

Now if anyone here on AZ forums know of a suitable site that's big enough, has enough capital and is interested, send them to me - anne@wpba.com.

Indian Gaming has been so supportive of the WPBA, we appreciate every Casino that has hosted one of our events. I would hope that those of you who think "having it in Ignacio is another bonehead move by the WPBA" realize how lucky you are to be able to watch us free via the internet AND on ESPN, without having to put any more effort into it other than click a few mouse buttons or lift your remote off the couch :)

Just my humble but admittedly biased opinion.

Don't forget, we're starting FREE live web streaming this morning at 11:00am Mountain time (that's 10am PST and 1pm EST for all us time zone challgened people). click the link on our homepage at www.wpba.com or here on azbilliards homepage. Thanks to Pooldawg.com for their Sponsorship of web streaming for 2009!

As always, your humble servant,

Anne - WPBA

Hi Anne,

We certainly do appreciate having these tournaments, even if it is in a remoter location.

So that we can better appreciate what goes into the decision-making process, it might help if you could answer any of the following questions:
- What is the Site Sponsor fee to host a WPBA tournament?
- What are the production costs?
- What are the venue size requirements?
Thanks,
Allen

Allen, if you have serious leads then please email me at anne@wpba.com

Our production costs for 25 hours of original programming this year run well over $400,000

As for venue size, the minimum requirement is 7500 - 10,000 square feet, although most of our venues offer larger event centers than that.

Site sponsor fees vary depending upon the tournament type (Classic Tour vs. a Major event etc) and something that is discussed directly with the venue representatives.

Did anyone show up to see this event?

I'm wondering if the crowds ever materialized in Ignacio. I was there on Thursday and Friday and only saw a few folks in attendance. Friday night might have brought out about 100 people, but even then, it looked like many were part of the players' entourage.

I ask only because I'm thinking this event may not get hosted again next year, due to poor attendance. That would be a shame because it looked like a nice venue. It was definitely out in the middle of nowhere. I happen to have relatives that live in the area and it was convenient for me to check out the show.

I also spent some time at the pool hall in Durango (Colorado Pongas). They just needed to fix that loose cloth on the 9 footer and I would've been a happier customer.

We have discovered over the years that many venues end up using the initial event as a learning experience. The Sky Ute was extremely supportive of the WPBA this year, and I think they learned a lot of different ways to promote the event if they agree to host a second year. I heard that their gaming/food/hotel revenues were up during the time that we were there...so that is a positive. It is my feeling, from my conversations with our contacts, that they are interested in bringing the WPBA back in the future...which is great news since I know that the players had a terrific time there!

As part of lessons learned, I'd like to suggest that some consideration be given to the fans who might have wanted to attend this tournament.

When I queried the Sky Ute web site a month ago for reservations, the hotel was almost sold out. What rooms were available were going for about $135/night. The unavailability of rooms and the high cost of lodging might have been a consideration for some fans to not attend. The alternative of having to drive 50 miles round trip to Durango for lodging doesn't strike me as a practical solution. Not only that, many hotels in Durango are sold out at this time of the year.

It might have been helpful for the WPBA to have some kind of promotional special with the hotels in Durango for fans who might want to attend the tournament in Ignacio.

Good point. If you were from out of town, like I was, you had some difficulty in finding a place to stay. Apparently there was a bike race and something else going on at the same time as the pool tournament. I ended up in the far north side of Durango. It took me all of a half-hour to get to Ignacio - and I drive fast! My room rate was about $87/day (tax included, middle of the week). I could've stayed closer to downtown but then I would've really had to fork over some big bucks.

With all the casinos located in the Phoenix area, I'm hoping that one day we'll get a yearly WPBA event here.

Bump!

Can anyone provide more information on the number of spectators who attended?

We're waiting on final numbers from the Casino. The crowds were light early in the week and since it was a first time event, that's to be expected. By the final day, we had nice crowds from the surrounding community, including many of the Southern Ute tribal members who seemed to enjoy themselves tremendously - one Tribal Elder bid and won the auction for the signed final 16 set of billiard balls, for $1,600! The WPBA and Sky Ute had coordinated a big push in PR, including contacting various clubs; Big Sisters & Big Brothers, the Kangaroo Club in Durango (youth sports), the local Elk's club that runs a billiard league in the area, and the local Veteran's clubs. In addition, we had a lot of airplay on local tv, print media, live radio feeds (including Fox Sports Radio AM1340)

It takes time to establish an event and as each year grows, so do the crowds. Our event in San Diego at the Viejas Casino is generally sold out for the event, as is Saturday & Sunday at the Riverwind Casino in Norman, OK. The economy this year has had a definite affect but all our venues understand this.

I would hope that everyone remembers, we're still chugging away, providing a Professional arena for our members to play in with prize funds that have more than tripled since the Classic Tour's inception in 1993, with regular airing & reairs on ESPN, ESPN2 and ESPN Classic here in the states, and airing in more than 90 countries world wide. All this and in a tough economy to boot. If anyone has serious leads for a host site, then pass them along to me at anne@wpba.com. Otherwise, please continue to enjoy watching Women's billiards on T.V. for the mere cost of your cable bill each month :)

Thanks!
Anne - WPBA
