WPC Finals Breaking News

When I say breaking news, I mean literally breaking news. The Taiwanese have labeled the soft break utilized in the majority of matches in this year's WPC as the "bird break."

There has been discussion about changing the rules for next year's WPC because of the soft break.

Now changes have been made for the finals of this year's WPC because of the soft break, and so this is my BREAKING news, taken from a blog:

...here's the big news for tomorrow.

The tables are being swapped! In the interest of making it more of a game, seeing as how all the players seemed to have mastered the break on TV Table 1 (soft break, control the cue-ball, run out), the tournament organisers have decided to finally do something. The Main TV Table is right this very moment being dismantled, and TV Table 2 where the players have been breaking a lot harder will be the one used for the final. It will be moved over.

At the same time, the air-conditioning at the Araneta Coliseum will be kept off until 2 hours before the game, and the TV lights kept off as well. Daryl Peach has been informed, and he's fine with that. The man from Matchroom is getting hold of Gomez's manager to inform her about it, and I have just confirmed that Gomez is aware of the swap.

What we'd all be hoping for tomorrow is a harder break, more ball action, and an end to what the Taiwanese call the ?bird-break?. That, hopefully, should be the end of all that limp-wristed stuff that we've seen ALL the power breakers deliver over the past few days. Listen out for the loud cracks as we race to 17 tomorrow!

So time will tell if this strategy favors one player over the other, but I'm still rooting for Gomez! :)

It will be interesting to see how the final match unfolds, race to 17, as opposed to seeing the exact same wing ball fly into the exact same pocket each and every time. :o

No more bird breaks, I guess! :D

Changing the tables at this stage is unfair to Gomez. He has mastered tv table 1 already with his soft breaks. Don't remember even seeing him have a dry break or scratch on the break on this table.

When his match with Karl Boyes was suddenly moved to table 2, he won the lag BUT did not make any balls on the break. All of a sudden, Boyes was ahead 4 to 0 and I thought he will be gone already. It is good that he shifted to the hard break and scored 11 games straight to go into the finals. I think he is more comfortable in table 1 and changing the tables at this time is more to Daryl's advantage.

He had one, I'm watching the Gomez/Feijen match, courtesy of BPG24 and he
had a dry break at 6-0. The wing ball (the 3 ball) rattled out...

But he still had better luck in table 1. He was never behind in any game when he was at this table.

the soft break is very weinie IMO............................ Break hard and play the game right. no loopholes......... :)

In order to counteract

the soft break, a tiny windmill with a slight incline will be installed, so that the breaker has to time the cue ball through the windmill before it hits the rack.

If the cue ball hits a blade of the windmill, it is a foul and the opponent then tries to break ...... :D :D

Thanks!

Thanks! This is interesting news and I didn't see it buried deep in another thread. Sounds like the table will be a little damper. Maybe somebody will sneak in with a spritz bottle and give it a few shots too. :D :D :D

He scratched in the side pocket playing Wu

the swap won't work. i predict that players will still use the soft break with great advantage.

I agree that changing format, conditions, venue or rules at this point is a crock of crap. The event should be completed as it has been played and not be impacted by politics, whining, crying or $$. How can participants who are now pine brothers because of ??????? be made whole?

PLAY IT OUT and get the rules "right" next year.

If table 2 is the same Brunswick Metros with 4.5-inch pockets

and the cloth cover is the same super sleek Simonis 860

and the ref will still tap the 1 ball and the 3 balls from the back

and they will still let the players break from the wings

and the TV lights will be on every conceivable angle just like before

and the Philippine humidity stays as is

I'm sure both players will have the same table conditions as close as to table 1.

They will both get a stab at the new table before the finals, and I'm sure they will know what kind of break to use...

Jam, last year I was all over "THIS" aspect, not specifically what's going on, but I was disappointed about the 'sport' of 9 ball and the effect on the NON agressive play/style that the pocket size created and now the BUN/RUN break or whatever you want to call it has done to 9-ball, its like having a PGA event and they can't or don't use the driver anymore. What the WPA needs to do is define in writing what the sport of 9-ball 'actually' 'is' ". It then becomes a "mission" statement for what your trying too create and in turn you strive to make it what it truly is when all in" or letting it all hang out 'there""". Life at its Finest.""

Finally the sponsor and the sport are "Waking Up" and realizing whats at stake and more importantly what's currently wrong with the 9-ball/sports product that has been created by too small pockets of last year and now the soft break.
9-BALL, ITS THIS....IT'S FAST, IT'S AGRESSIVE, ITS ADRELENINE, ITS EGO, ITS POWER, ITS TESTERONE, ITS ESTROGEN, IT'S SOMEWHAT MALE IN IT'S AGRESSIVE ATTITUDE, GREAT PLAY IS DOMINANCE, and the high off of being in control is LIFE AT ITS "BEST". At this point its WAY more than a game. A.........Bustamante/McCready/Sigel/Hall/Cole Dixon/Earl style of game needs to be embraced.
Take the ....out of what its supposed to be and the EXCITEMENT of what true/TRUE 9-Ball IS..................................is gone. Bye

JAM, you have definitely taken the lead in the "AZB Pun of the Year" award for 2007.

This is BS trying to cater to the Filipino player. I hope peach drills him.

Eric.

You got to be kidding. Actually the sudden switch of tables caters more to Peach and is unfair to Roberto Gomez. In his interviews, Gomez said that he prefers table 1 and that is because he has won a lot of games there and the condition is perfect for the slow break. To suddenly change the table near the end of the tournament is catering more to Peach and the people who are complaining about the soft breaks.

Have you been watching Roberto's matches? If you have, then you would see how he has mastered table 1. And to suddenly switch the table at this point of the tournament is not doing him any favor.

:D Anyway, I believe that SUPERMAN will prevail in the finals and he is going to have some 'PEACH' pie for dessert today.
