WPS - I like the format a lot

I am surprised he cant get a full field.

I'm guessing its the big tables. Barbox tournaments seem to get a lot more entries.
Either that or at @$500 entry, it is too much.

Not even sure why theres a qualifier stage when they only have 80ish entries in the main event and there were a lot of 1st round byes. Supposedly the byes are setup for the top so many players. I'd like to see 100+ entries.

A lot of big name Americans didnt even care to play. SVB, Dechaine, Bergman..

Darren actually wanted just 96 players for this recent event. Then the top 32 would have first-round byes and the other 64 would play.

Also, he wants these to be true professional events, not ones where anyone willing to put in some dead money can play.

Not sure what you mean. Skyler played in WPS #2.

[Edit -- but I see Skyler did forfeit his first-round match in the 2nd-chance event at Steinway. So maybe he headed south at that point?]

Did anyone manage to see a photo of the pocket size used in recent event? I remember seeing it on Facebook but can't seem to find it now.

4" pockets
Were there photos posted with 2 balls sitting side by side over the pocket?

Over at WPS website:

EQUIPMENT:
Aramith Pro Cup TV Balls, Measle Cueball, Brunswick Table, 4.25 Pocket Size

The Rasson tv table had 4" pockets. I believe the rest of the tables, gold crowns, had 4 1/4" pockets. It's my understanding that the pockets play similarly though because the Rasson even has less pocket shelf than the GCs.

No matter what format you have,$500 entry fee is too much for $10,000 to winner. This tournament needs what most need...more sponsorship and less entry fees. I also don't care for the shoot-out.Johnnyt

Keeping it boring has worked so well

Oh please...there isn't even a clear definition of what a "true professional" poolplayer is. He will take entry fees (at $500 a pop) from whomever shows up with the cash...period.

What Darren wants (as he has said) is for his events to become true professional-level events, not pro-ams and not events full of dead-money players. The fact that we currently have no well established definition of who is a pro is sort of beside the point. His events going forward will be comprised of players who earn a spot from finishing decently in his prior events, plus people who earn a spot in qualifiers. He does not want events where anyone can plunk down $500 and play.

And that is what many of us have long wanted for pool. It's the way other sports work.

Whether he eventually achieves that, we'll have to wait and see. But Darren seems to me to be frank and honest. I'm going to believe what he has said on this point.

[Listen to the linked interview in post #18 if you haven't already.]

Anyone know the exact # of entries?

Not having a full-field means less payouts.

Kaci got 12K. Full-field would've been 14K for first. It affects all those who cashed.
