Wrap Advice

I'm looking for some advice on how to apply a leather wrap. I'm not in the business and I'm not looking to be - I would just like to try my hand at it. I've been doing my own tips for years and built a shaft spinner (electric drill and cane tip) based on info read on this Forum. I was lucky two years ago and bought a Harbor Freight 7x10 lathe at a garage sale for $75 (they were asking $100). It was the last day of the garage sale and they were just looking to get rid of it (belonged to their father). So I do have some tools. I only do 1 or 2 tips a month or two for friends. I could use the Shaft spinner (I have two sizes of cane tips - one for a shaft and another to accomodate a house cue) to spin a butt and clean it that way after I removed the linen wrap. Now I need help with the next steps. At my age I'm a little mentally challenged so detailed instructions would be great. I have a couple of WalMart cues that I got when I bought a bar box but I never use them. They would be perfect for practice.

I think you may be going in deeper than you can with your equipment.

The Leather is thicker than irish linen. This means the first thing you will need to do is bring the whole wrap valley down so the leather will fit. Are you prepared to do this?

Thanks for the info Tom. I assumed the linen wrap would be about the thickness of the leather wrap. I may be out of luck unless the wrap is close to the same thickness. If needed, I could sand the wrap area down a little but not much.

Theres quit a few quality leather wraps that are very close to the same thickness of linnen.

My advice is to use a firm leather wrap, sharp razor and Elmers white glue so its easy to clean and forgiving.

Thanks for the link Blue Hog Rider. Took a while to start but well worth waiting for. It contained a lot of good information. It sure would be easier with the jig, but it looks doable without it.

Yep, I and several others here have taken advantage of Darrin's generosity and used his design.

Works great!

I've seen them with hinge and plate too.

I've done it with tool post mounted blade and it cuts pretty straight but the setup takes a long time.

One of these days when I leave my shop, if I ever do again, I'm gonna come see you and we're gonna wrap without that jig of yours. It'll be fun.

Done it with straight edge with gasket cork bottom.
Done it overlap and single edge at a time.
Done it with a blade on the toolpost. This one really cut straight but setup takes a lot of time.

I have a concept of a leather jig with roller cutter but have no time to make it right now.
