Wrap or Crap

I prefer the classic linen wrap. If the right color matches the cue it just brings out the wood,
Ive tried leather wraps and liked it but it just didnt feel the same, especially with sweaty hands. I guess it depends on the leather. Personally i cant do the elephant ear wrap. something is just wrong about that to me.
Ive got one cue that needs a cork rewrap ( i chewed off the original cork during a stressfull tournament) but i hate how the cork gets so dirty and changes color.

peace....

EDIT: By the way, that is Cortland. Have you ever touched it? Shot with a cue wrapped with it? I recommend you try it. You can always just get a cue maker to wrap a cue with it for you....if he has it....and if he will do it for you....and you can cope with the price.

....madmiller...just to help you out, cortland feels like somewhere between pressed irish linen and the inner thigh of a beautiful woman:wink:

I'm not sure if that imagery would sell to the female demographic. I'm trying to picture the Fury Cue ad on the back cover of Inside Pool, with Xiao Ting Pan and Kelly Fisher with that slogan.

When I was 19 I bought a cue from Modell's, a local sporting goods chain. Cue came with a ramen wood shaft, screw on tip, and a wrap that came unfurled after a couple of weeks. That was over 25 years ago, and I when I came back into the game I stayed with sneaky petes because of my past bad experiences with cheap cues. It was only last year I ended up buying a cue that came with wrap (Bludworth). I bought it because I liked how it played.

Even the cheapest Players Sneaky Pete is noticeably better than the department store stuff.

I would like to know am I the only one? I see a lot of different cues, cheap ones, expensive ones, custom, etc..
Some of them are very expensive...
But if it has linen wrap on it, I don't care how good it hits, how expensive it is. I will NOT touch it.
Wrap looks like crap, looks cheap, light colors get dirty easy, and worst of all, god forbid you scrape it on something it will come unwrapped.
I just don't get it. A lot of times I see a beautiful cue otherwise, but its look spoiled by having that thing called linen wrap.

Wrapless looks better, feels better, and, I think, plays better, too. I might not say that, though, if I had sweaty hands.

for some reason i really hate the look of a black with white speck linen wrap. i prefer wrapless myself, but i don't think a linen wrap looks bad.

I am of the opposite idea, I ONLY play with linen wrapped cues, even though I have no hand sweat at all. I played a couple of linen wrapped but the wrap always look better over time, becoming shiny instead of denuded like other players. I will try wrapless some day but it has to look stunning, with the handle really stands out. Leather wraps are not appealing to me, though I will try it when my friend's custom cue with elephant ear wrap is completed.

My cue in the avatar is a sugartree, i am not sure of the wrap, some say it is irish linen, some say it is cortland. however, it is original since 2008 and still in perfect condition, shiny, and NOT stinky at all.

Wrapless or leather for me. I never did like linen. There is of course no accounting for personal taste and I'm sure I'm in the minority here.

Actually your probably in the majority. There are some linen lovers but seems to be more wrapless,
and leather lovers here.

Well...I guess linen wrap sucks...guess I'll see if I can tear off the original cortland off this and go to elephant ear....NOT!

Thanks for your opinion, I hope you feel better now that you shared your thought's with the forum!!!!!:grin-square:

Have a great 4th of July, and don't lose any sleep over this because I can assure you I won't!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Leather, Linen, Wrapless, I like them all. What I don't like is a linen wrap that is so pressed it feels like it's sealed like a Meucci. I never understood wrapping and then sealing the wrap. Seems to defeat the purpose.

I also don't care for the stuff they use on Cuetec and the like.

I've played with linen, leather, and wrapless. I prefer any sort of wrap to wrapless. Pressed linen is too slippery for me so I put it one step above wrapless.
Anyway, X2 for prety much everything Chopdoc wrote.

It's all in your own preference.
I would bet that the wrap that came off on you was NOT pressed Irish linen, and was most likely nylon, which tends to fail.

I play with a pretty expensive OMEN cue. It's a 6 point 3 veneer Ebony forearm coco bola points southwest style cue with a flat black pressed Irish linen wrap.
I can't imagine any other type of wrap being on this cue, that would look as good! The contrast in the shiny ebony to flat black linen, just makes this cue pop!
People ask me all the time if it's a Southwest, and I'm proud to say NO it's an Omen.I got this cue for a song and a dance, and if I was to have an exact duplicate built it would cost me about $3500.
If you want a classic timeless beauty of a cue then your looking at one with an Irish linen wrap, because that's how it was done on all the expensive custom cues of years gone by.
It was suggested to me once before to have the wrap replaced with leather,or elephant ear,but that would ruin the look of this classic Southwest style cue!I would imagine if I did do it I would never be asked again about the maker of this cue.It would just look like every other modern cue makers style.

I agree and disagree.

I prefer a wrapless cue, but when you have something like what i have you learn to let a little slide to play with the cue of your dreams.

I can play with either and wraps look good on some stuff. but matching the color in the wrap to the theme of the cue, is just as important if not more important than selecting the right combination of woods!

different stokes i suppose..

pun intended...

best,

Justin
