wrap or wrapless

I know somewhere on here it's probably been asked before, I would like some opinions on wrap or no wrap on a cue I seem to like Irish linen thanks.

A wrap to me is for hand placement. I use the wrap as a guide. Otherwise for the beauty of it. I have leather & linen wraps. Also a few wrap-less. Buy what you like. There is no right or wrong. No rules when selecting your cue.

Played with a wrapped cue for years, switched to wrapless for a couple years, now back to a wrapped cue. It is all dependent to me on if the cue plays how I like it to play regardless of wrap.

Wrap vs. No-Wrap: Personal Preference

I personally like the feel of something textured on the butt of the cue. My cue has a textured wrap excluding the last 5 inches of the butt. This helps me know where my hand is as I really never hold the butt much closer because I am a tall person and have a wide arm span. If my cue came with a complete butt wrap, I would most likely like it and would need to adjust to the feel on the end.

I've always played with an Irish linen wrap, but I've recently changed. Irish linen is just too slippery for me these days. I like having a very light grip and I've been finding with the linen that my cue actually slips out of my hand a bit sometimes.

I tried wrapless. I really like it except if my hand sweats is gets a little slippery. That may just have to do with the kind of finish on it. I think with a traditional nitro finish, that wouldn't happen, but these new finishes are hard as a rock and don't seem to have much tack to them.

I've settled on lightly textured leather. Seems to be about right to me. My break cue is still no wrap, though. For an occasional shot, no wrap seems to have the most tack, other than maybe rubber.

Wrapless 24/7 for me. I shoot with the butt of the cue touching my chest. I cannot have anything interrupting my stroke that is catching or dragging against my shirt.

Also I just plain don't like how anything feels in my hand besides the clear coat.

Wrap, or wrap-less. That's the conundrum.
You've probably used house cues before so you're aware of how they feel. And you've probable used one of your buddies cues with a linen wrap, so you know how they feel. After that it's really up to you which one you like the best.
Most players probably prefer a linen wrapped cue, followed by those who like leather wrapped cues, followed by those who like it bare-assed naked.

What you like is all that matters.

Isn't Earl using premium bubble wrap taped on with duct tape these days?

The first cue I bought had an Irish linen wrap. I didn't know anything about cues and I figured "with wrap" must be better than "without", right?

But the cue always felt slippery to me. One day I didn't bring my cue to the hall so a played with a house cue. Viola! No slip...felt great.

I immediately ordered an OB121 (wrapless sneaky) and couldn't be happier. I've played with friends' linen-wrapped cues since then, and each one has reinforced my decision to go wrapless.

That said, it's an individual decision, just like what kind of tip to use. But don't make the mistake that I did and just assume that "with wrap" is better.

Earl prefers Tennis Racket Tape wrapped around his butt - and lots of it too...

As Earl say's, "How do you expect to play the game if you do not have the right equipment?"

I think its tennis racket tape. It has a nicer feel than Kentucky Chrome(duct tape)

I have a few of both Wrapless/Wrapped cues, and it doesn't matter to me which. When I'm shooting, it never will cross my mind.

I think some of the Wrapless cues are the most beautiful cues ever. Just take a look at some of Eric's Sugartree's.... just amazing. Why cover up a beautiful piece of wood with Linen, Leather, or Cork.

But.....is it your favorite or the best?

If you go wrapless, unless the cue is a full splice or single piece of wood, make sure the cuemaker knows how to keep his rings and seams from popping... Incredibly annoying and distracting.

never been a fan of linen much and always prefered a nice pretty wood handle

im just now taking a liking to some traditional looking cues with a nice white linen wrap

till then all mine are wrapless

I am a Cortland Linen fan.......if the wrap isn't Cortland, then I'd go with an old
Cuttyhunk linen fishing line brand if I liked the color otherwise it's strictly leather.
Blue Mountain made a nice linen wrap but went out of business and Cortland's
linen fishing line stopped being produced many decades ago.

There is a reason why you pay so much for a Cortland linen wrap and so little for
all the other linen wraps. I just don't care for the current availability of linen wraps
and so I'd rather put a nice leather wrap on a cue that feels great. Kangaroo is the
best feeling leather wrap I ever tried and it's on my buddy's cue.....it feels great.

I use bike handle bar tape and use bike gloves to eliminate the vibrations. It makes a cheap cheap feel great. 🚴

Here is a photo I took of Earls cue while he was entertaining a crowd at his sponsor's booth.

I used to have my cues wrapped with linen, leather or no wrap at all. Since Guido Orlandi put a Cork Wrap on my Cue... that's it ... I'm a Corker...!
