You snooze you loose

Something I could not believe came up this weekend at the AZ One Pocket State Championship.

Two good players were in a match (race to 3) They were a few minutes into game #4 when player "A" realized he forgot to move his coin to reflect his 2-1 lead. When he went to move it his opponent says... "No, you cant move it now... if you snooze you loose - the score is still 1-1 since you forgot to move the coin"

WTF??? I do not understand why someone would say that. If you know your opponent is ahead... they are ahead... it does not matter if they forgot to move the coin.

What was even more odd to me was when they were approached the tournament director (nice decision Dennis) he still insisted that the rule is "if you snooze you loose".

I call BS!

Is this a surprize to anyone?

Do AZ players seem to 'standout' among other players from around the country?

I am surprised

Perhaps I am naive... but having someone say... "Yes, you won two games and I have won 1... but the score is still 1-1 because you forgot to move your coin. that is crazy.

I often see people claim they think the score is 1-1... but I never have seen someone say they knew their opponent won twice but they do not get credit because "if you snooze you loose".

I'd never make it beyond the amateur level because to me this is total horseshit. I couldn't, because of my conscience, take a game from someone because they had a lapse in memory.
I've played matches where I would swear that I already crossed the finish line only to be told I needed one more. Why fight about it? Just win one more, especially when you're not 100% sure.

So I am assuming from your "Nice decision Dennis" comment, that the Tournament Director ruled that the score was 2-1? You did not really say?

Oh and who won?

I had a guy pull the exact same line on me in a tournament about 6 years ago. I was kind of new then, so I let him get away with it without an argument, but it has cost him dearly since.

I'm one of those guys who has fun playing the game, and it is difficult for me to develop a "killer-instinct", because I find it difficult to dislike my opponent. Whenever I play this guy, I want to beat him BADLY, because of the BS he pulled on me. I always bring out my best game against him, and almost always beat him.

What goes around, comes around.....

Never heard of this "You snooze you lose" rule... but sometimes you have to count on Karma shining through.

Yesterday..my opponent broke and made nothing, I made a tough shot w/ shape and my opponent called a foul as the 15 moved slightly by contacting my stick. This is a cueball foul only league, but the league secratary that made a ruling said that we should re-rack. He felt bad and offered the break, but I let him break. Well he made nothing again an I won 10-0 just like I likely would have the previous game.

CueTable Help

If it had been me, I would have just reminded the guy to move the coin as soon as I noticed that he had forgotten.

But to play devil's advocate, could there be a justification for the snooze rule? Say both players forgot, and the guy who didn't win had checked the score and thought he had another game before his opponent got to the hill.

What if this were a race to 5, and a player forgot to move the coin on the first game, and remembered once he got to 4? Sometimes I bear down harder when I know my opponent is on the hill. I don't know the answer to "what's fair?", but I can see some justification for some sort of snooze rule.

Again before you flame me, remember that in the situation described, I would have just moved the guy's coin for him and let him know he forgot.

This is B.S. on SO MANY DIFFERENT LEVELS!!!

I'd really like to know the name of the guy that pulled that move. what a JERK! it's one thing if your "not sure of the score" (later in the match) but 2 to 1???? come on, give me a break. Surely we can all remember who won the last 3 games.

My conscience would not permit me to do that to ANYONE! but some have no scruples. They would've had to disqualify me because I would not go quietly after a move like that.

I would have been tempted to just say F*** it! if you have to win that bad you can have this stinking match because I'm not gonna play your sorry ass anymore!

ahhh I feel better already:p

I agree, that is pretty damn weak to take a game away from someone. I could see it if someone slept a ball but to take away a game, that dude is in line for some brutal KARMA down the road.

The guy was not going to give up the match and not play with him,it was in the last 12 of the State Championship,he did go on to win though.I dont think it was right,I could see if it was a race to 5 and this happened and a game or 2 had been played when neither remember but this guy knew that his opponent won the games and acknowledged it.I know in one pocket some people play sleepers which means if you snooze you lose when it comes to leaving balls in the return and not putting them on your side after your inning is done,to me this is okay because it causes arguments.I have heard in a gambling match of a guy running 6 balls and putting the balls on the wrong side of the return and the other guys claimed them, now that is pretty bad when you only made one ball.

I agree, If I knew the score and just because in the heat of play my opponent forgot to move the coin I would let him have it OF COURSE. The reason being if you move on and win the whole thing, I would not be able to live with myself. There would be no way to make it up to the other guy or myself. I would feel like a chump, and I would be.

Lame. The fact that it is during the third game and that they BOTH know he won the last game which from reading your post was just a few minutes prior to the dispute makes it even worse. That'd be like playing 9-ball alternating breaks, you win, opponent breaks, doesn't move your coin, and then says snooze you lose. F that.

I am with ya there, who said I have to keep the track of my games with a coin?? I only keep score in my head unless my opponent telsl me otherwise before the match starts. My games I win. F off before I set Carlos on ya.

If "Dennis" did not allow the player to record his score he should not be running tournaments

you're right...

I would probably not give up the match after advancing that far in the tournament BUT~

There's NO WAY I'm laying down for that one LOL!

Yes, after Dennis had them both acknowledge they were in the 4th game and the score was 2-1... he made them move the coin before they could proceed. Not sure how it ended up as I got called to a match just then.

Always, always, always, played One Pocket this way and I'm really surprised that others have never even heard of it.
