Your best playing cues

My best was a Andy gilbert king wood cue curly maple points. .he made it in 97 the very first i ever got from him.. .And i'll always love that cue ...

I really like my madison bob cue and my dzuricky, both of them hit the ball great. Now if my aim was a little better life would be good.

The MB has a radial pin, flat faced joint and the dz has a 3/8x10 (it could be 11) pin and is wood to wood. Both balance about 19.25-19.40" from the butt. The dz is a bit more lively, and the mb is a bit more stiff in my opinion.

I have both a Schick and a Bender (from someone we know) and both hit very well.
Does the Cog actually hit that well?

Myron
The cog hit's a little to soft for me. I have not changed the tips yet, it came with triangle tips and those are to soft for me. I'm putting a sniper tip on and I think that will change the hit more to my taste. How are you? Things are good on this end.

What where your very best playing cues?

Hands down - Layani with medium Moori.

I also have a Barry Cameron that hits quite nicely but my wife has adopted it. And Sheldon Lebow made me a not so sneaky pete that hit very well but the balance point was too rear-weighted for me and I sold it. Now I wish I'd simply got Sheldon to adjust the balance.

My first Schuler. I guess I should take it out of retirement, but since Ray passed away, I've been trying to keep it out of harms way. I don't do this because thinking it will ever become collectible. I've done this because it's a special cue to me that I've damaged in the bars too many times than it deserves.

I think all of my cues play great. Not a bad hitting cue in the bunch. I'd have to say that I like my Skip Weston with ebony, snake wood and cocobolo the best. If I had to rank them It'd be like this:

1. Skip Weston '05 (60" ebony/snake wood)
2. Edwin Reyes '05 (60" ebony/amboyna/scrim)
3. Andy Gilbert '05 (60" ebony/maple j/b)
4. Edwin Reyes '05 (60" curly maple/ebony j/b)
5. Skip Weston '04 (59" ebony/bushka)
6. Skip Weston '04 (58" ebony/amboyna)

The difference between my affinity for 1 and 6 is negligible and the only reason the two Skip Weston's are at the end is the 60" cues are more comfortable for me. I am currently using my ebony and snake wood cue as my most-of-the-time player and sometimes use a different cue when I feel like a change. I've been using the 58" Skip in my bar box leagues sometimes since I rarely have to use a stroke that would move me uncomfortably far back on the butt sleeve.

All my cues play like shit... but thats only indicitive of the talent holding them. :)

Must be because the practice time has been forfeited for a family.
But I am sure you can still work some magic on the tables.

How well does that really fancy Boti hit?
Not that I could afford even a practice hit with it...

What about Jensen, Judd, gilbert? Great playing cues.

I played with a Mohawk for the longest time. Never thought I'd sell it till I hit a Gilbert. Bought one within a month of trying one out.

Man...I have owned what seems to be 200 cues in my life in search for that "hit" when all the time I have had the cue. Its a Star Cue Sneaky Pete made by Abe Rich <possibly the oldest cuemaker on the planet> my dad bought for me in 1979 for $55. Years later I had Dennis Searing make me a shaft and the rest is history. Although I had a James White that was incredible until a friend told me he would kill himself if I didnt sell it to him, lol. Played with a Gina for a year or so that was super but none of them come close to the Szamboti I lost in Hurricane Andrew...sigh!!

Jerry Olivier Is The Best Playing Cue That I Have Ever Used.
Although My Friend Has A Bryan Mordt It Palys Great.

I'm like Zeeder/Zack, all of my cues hit well and the difference among them is slight. So, this list is in no particular order AFTER #1. :p

1. Joel Hercek - 59", SS piloted joint - just a touch sweeter than the others

Josswests - 2
Richard Black
Jim Ingram
Jim White
Tim Scruggs
Joel Hercek

My beat up Zylr b'eye cue.
Plays jam up. I sold all my other cues after I got this one.
A friend of mine has two Hagans that play like a dream as well. He's not selling them.
Scruggs sneaky pete; he has as well. Won't sell it.

It was just an attempt at some humor. :)

I have a 4 point Gus that hits solid (my current fave), my Skip hits very good and my Fanelli is right up there. But to each his own. The ebony Gus
on the site is to heavy for me so I would say its not to my liking.
Thats doesn't mean it doesn't hit great. But I haven't found an
ivory jointed Gus with a birdseye forearm that I hit with I didn't like.

One cue that stands out in my mind for playability was a nice 73 ish Bushka with a Boti blank. The cue just seemed to meld with your mechanics and it's one I should have bought and kept.

There have been others.. Murrey made Mark a great eb/eb cue. Jim Whites FIRST cue hits very good. My Balsis Paradise, if it didn't have Joes name in it, I could use it every day.

Early 90's Cog

Charlie Edwards said:
Mike, did you buy the Cog new, from Joey Gold? The reason I ask is that my Cog is a little stiff. Not a lot, but no where near whippy. Since Joey makes all his shafts 13.2MM, perhaps by the time you got it, the shafts had been re-tapered. I had mine cut down to 13mm, and kept it somewhat stiff. Just a thought.

Hello Charlie,,

Charlie have we ever met? Anyway the early 90's Cog i picked up in a 4 cue deal was the most beautiful gorgeous cue I have ever owned. That cue was so gorgeous that women sitting at the counters of up scale sport bars who had absolutely no connection to pool would stop to make comment on the artistic beauty of this Cog.. A somewhat different type of look than all the later & current produced Joey Gold's. This cue used no Ivory or turquoise inlaid. The Forearm was a nice curly maple and the hand made inlaid floating dagger style points used a beautiful cocobola. What made this cue so stunning was the combination of maple/cocobola against a backdrop of this most gorgeous looking checkered brown fiber material that Joey says is un obtainable today. Joey told me that material was used on the Space Shuttle and the manufacture changed hands making that material un obtainable. Joey told me he could not replicate that cue today because that beautiful looking checkered brown fiber material can't be had anymore. What a gorgeous looking material that Joey used for the collars/ringwork and butt cap on this cue. The color combination using small green colored pieces of wood set into the ringwork just set this cue apart from all others.. I could not take that cue out no matter where i traveled without some player/small collector etc asking if I would sell them the cue. I had a few collectors and a non pool playing enthusiast always asking me when was I going to sell them the cue. The Cog wasn't a well known cue at the time. One day the same one young man who kept bugging me about the cue asked me how much would I sell him the cue for.. I blurred out 1800 just throwing out any amount never expecting this kid being serious.. The young man told me to wait and ran out of the poolroom. He returned within 1/2 hour with 18 one hundred dollar bills. I felt as I had opened my mouth and now had to give up the cue. The kid had been bugging me for a month or so. I opened my mouth and now had to honor my words. I sold the cue and really wasn't feeling good about it. Joey Gold told me that cue is worth over 5000 today and couldn't be replicated. What a gorgeous cue that had always gotten a lot of attention where ever I traveled. I never before or after owned a cue that received so much attention and willing offers to buy which at the time was a very high price for a cue from an unfamiliar cue maker. The cue only had 1 shaft which had warped. That warped shaft didn't matter to the buyer. The cue sold for the 1st price that I threw out. I said 1800 only ONCE to all interested buyers and the cue sold that fast for that 1800. I had NO idea what the cue was worth. I really had never heard of a Cognoscenti at the time. It was a fairly new cue on the market at the time. Charlie The cue played well but like I mentioned, it had a little whippiness to the hit very similar to a light weight hand made 80s Meucci. The shaft had warped quickly. It was a very well balanced, slim butt light weighted cue, maybe an 18+oz with a never seen before glass pin. Wasn't my best playing cue although it was a good playing cue but was the very best looking cue I have ever owned. I never seen aa better looking cue to be honest.. It didn't have that great solid hit like my 95 Bender or Gus made Blanks orig 80s Schons.. Those 3 cues, the Bender and 2 old orig mid 80s Schons were/are exceptiional true professional playing instruments. I can play well with just about any cue with any kind of tip. But when that cue has that great balance and weight and that great resonance to the wood and has that naturally good feel in my hands with that solid hit that I can feel in my right back hand and the shaft has that right weight and that just right amount of deflection, not too little and not too much being just right THAN I can play all that much MORE in CONTROL. Those long tought shots become so much easier to pocket. Thats when I know I have that special cue in my hands.. i know it the first few hits. Only takes me one or 2 hits to know if that cue is it or not. I'm a decent player Charlie,, I have beaten the best, I'm on that IPT list. I know when a cue plays well. Best advise I can give to anyone looking for a good custom made cue is to look for the cues that the cue maker has only given a dark wood grainy 4+oz shaft, stay away from clear flawless looking white light weight shafts. Go with the cue makers who understands the importance of the 4+oz conventionaly kiln dried shaft. There are NOT many cue makers out there like that. 15oz butt with a 4+oz shaft 58".. The 57" cue can be a very very very good cue. Like a Stradivarius musical instrument,,, the "RESONANCE" of the wood with parts that fit together very tightly, good tapers make for a solid playing cue... You want your cue to play solid. You want a shaft that has that right amount of deflection for YOU and your style of stroke. you want that great balance that works best for YOU... Not all perfect cues will be perfect for you. All players are different and have different styles and different strokes. What is best for me may not be best for you. Its good to understand what works best for you. The center ball Buddy Hall style player will like a stiffer hitting shaft/cue than a Jose Perica style player who plays a more off center ball style will like a shaft/cue with a little less stiffness and a little more shaft deflection. I'm getting into these areas of more precision type players. Your good solid open class pool player. Your gunslinging warriors of the green. Your true pool player. Good solid run out pool, masters of the cue ball. Not for the faint hearted. Poetic artistry in motion, the good pool player. Masters of the Green. Like the old gun slingers of the West riding into Dodge and surviving to ride out into the next towns shootout. Only the strong survive. Tales are told and legends are born. Mothers don't let your sons grow up to be cowboys or POOLPLAYERS. Show me a good poolplayer and I'll show you a misspent youth. (Quote - Old Man Miz, 1966)...The CREAM Always comes to the TOP... Steve Mizeracks Father, Old man Miz, great pool player and great man. The old long gone masters. The 300+ run club. Can you run 300 balls?? Thats your poolplayer. thats your IPT King of the Hill players...

Scott all great cues... They should play well.. Are you my friend Scott from GA? I knew a Scott who has a very similar collection of great cues. Scott this is your collection isn't it? This has to be my buddy Scott,,, who else has a idential collection named Scott.... Hi Scott,,, It's Mike.. I knew these cues,,, you sent me a picture...lol...
