Your favourite Earl Strickland quotes

Mine was in a one on one but here goes.

I was playing in a local tourney against a local favorite. Everyone, and I mean EVERYONE was routing for him. He would luck in a shot and the place would go crazy. I would slice a ball in the corner w/ inside english, go three rails for perfect shape..and you could hear a pin drop. Once I built a lead. Family and friends of my opponent started SERIOUSLY sharking me, and the on lookers thought it was funny. The TD was watching and did nothing. I basically got pissed and stopped playing my best game. With 2nd place in hand and pissed at myself for letting things get to me, I called Earl to discuss it.

Feeling sorry myself I commented....

"Earl, do you know what it is like to have an entire room routing against you?"

After about 20 seconds of silence, he came back with..

"Do you know who you're talking to!!"

Opps, my bad!! :o

Jay - Were'nt you the referee at the Challenge of Champions match between Ralf and Earl.

Don Mackey name came up in conversation and Earl asked if I knew him (which I did). He said: "That Mackey - you know he's down in Florida drinking Pina Coladas with MAH MONEY"

I've got dozens more like that but you'll have to wait for my book to hear them.

Not so much a quote, but a funny story that occurred because Earl hears what people say about him in this forum...

At one of the IPT events last year, Earl had an altercation with our very own Queen, Rackmsuckr aka Linda Carter, who IMO is one of the nicest people in pool - period! Here is Linda's side of the story when she posted about it last September...

Sorry, I haven't had time to get to the computers. Mike is struggling playing Luat, so I couldn't watch and went to get online.

Basically, Earl and I were on 2 adjoining tables. He came up to me and asked me if I was the girl that wrote the articles for a newspaper. I said I did write a monthly IPT article for On The Wire billiard paper, but I couldn't figure out where he was going with this.

I said I did post on a billiard forum though, and he said, "Yeah, that must be it! A friend told me you said something bad about me!"

Well, I may have given my opinion before (and this only confirms it), but I told him that I was 3rd in rep points on the forum and you probably don't get that by bashing people. In fact, I feel I am the voice of reason in a lot of squabbles and am the negotiator. I felt he probably had the wrong person.

He didn't let it go and attacked me, saying another player shouldn't be bashing another player in public (what was he doing to me??? ) but on another level I was flattered he was calling me another player, lol.

Anyway, I was trying to hit balls, as I only had another 5 minutes to warm up before matches started. He PULLED me away and wanted me to look at his table, talking all the while. I turned back to my table, addressing the cueball, and he picked up the cueball, saying if you want to write about something, why don't you write about all the match fixing from Vegas and putting the cueball over the line for the break (while he was demonstrating).

Someone returned my movie camera to me on it's monopod and the audience said I should hit Earl over the head with it. Earl turned back to his table and I mockingly raised it to whack him, and the audience laughed.

But inside, it was not a good thing to have to deal with right before my match.

He did the same thing to Sarah Ellerby, asking her if she was the girl that won the qualifier (confusing her with Jasmin) and he doesn't even recognize any of the women.

Deno actually read the forum where I mentioned the incident and asked me about it. Earl got fined for not wearing a button-down shirt under his sweater, so I feel vindicated.

If anyone wants to go through my 5 million posts and find where I really bashed Earl, I will publicly apologize, but he will have to too!

Poor Linda. Earl had her confused with "Straybullet". lol... Life does go on...

Earl at the DCC

Im in the elevator with Earl day 1 and i ask him if he was ready for this (DCC) and he ***** about the format nd stuff .then he got a funny lok on his face and said im to smart for the sport ?

Cueman's Story

Chris, just wondering what your son thought about that experience with Earl. I'm thinking he will cherish and remember it for the rest of his life.

Yes Earl can be a horses-a%% at times, but he is also more than willing to genuinely take the time with many people, pros, kids, and adults, to show them shots, help out with their game etc...

Just my two cents about Earl and how he gets treated. Does he deserve some of it? YES. Does he deserve all of it? NO.

I may have been. I did a few of them. I NEVER saw Ralf shark anyone, ever!

I think I did work that match, and pretty much ignored Earl's comment to Ralf. It did not raise to the level of being a problem. I just allowed him to continue to play. If he had continued talking to Ralf, I may have stepped in. Ralf was sitting about 15-20 feet from the table like a statue. He may have moved his head to get a better look at the shot, prior to Earl shooting as I recall.

Earl did NOT misbehave when I was ref'ing his matches. He knew better. I never had a problem telling him to cool it. I guess he respected me for whatever reason.

I actually played Earl twice in my pool career. The first time was in Memphis in 1985 I believe. I had won a couple of matches and was feeling pretty good. I came out ready to have a go at this new young champion. 11-3 later I wanted to go sit in a corner and cry. Earl basically retired me. He is one reason I quit playing in 9-Ball tournaments. I realized I would never have a chance against a guy who plays like this.

The second time was a year ot two later at the Clyde Childress tourney in Kentucky. I won my first Bank Pool match and then I played Earl. BOOM, BAM, BING and it was over. I got shot down in cold blood. He did it to me again. I was so upset I stayed up all night practicing.

The next day I had Mike Lebron on the Loser's side. He was only a year or so away from his U.S. Open title. Billy made the line that I wouldn't get two games in the Race to Five. I promptly bet $200 on me. I beat Lebron 5-2. Then I played Freddie to get into the money. Now Billy made the line I wouldn't three. I bet another $200 on me. I beat Freddie 5-3. True story, you can ask Freddie. Or Billy :)

I was in the final twelve, out of 32 starters. I next played Dave Bollman. Billy made no line on my match. HA HA! Dave and I went hill-hill. I broke, made a ball, and ran four. TRUE! I needed one and could have played safe. But I was feeling like I could make anything at this point and went for an off angle long rail bank. I made it! But the cue ball went three rails and scratched in the corner. I was now ahead 3-0. Dave came back and won that game. Good for him. He showed a lot of heart.

I never played in another Bank Pool tournament until Derby City in 1999. I did play a couple of times for money though, so I wasn't completely retired.

I'm starting to think I might need 5 on the wire Jay. :)

"you get some of these young guys to break from the middle of the table and they will break their hand" said in an interview, about soft-breaks and the wingball always being pocketed on the break.

I found some more:

At one point, trailing 5-3, Strickland responded angrily to Tabb’s suggestion that he quiet down by telling her, "You shut up."

Incredibly, using the mechanical bridge, Davis rattled the 5 in the jaws of the same corner pocket, prompting the emotional Strickland to leap from his chair, strike a Tarzan pose and proclaim to the crowd, "He dogged it!" (This is from the picture when you can see him screaming out loud raising his cue. Imagine doing that when your opponent miss?!?!)

I just can't let go of finding more quotes. This is about breakbox and womenplayers:

"Like if the women played matches from the box we break from, and the tables got a little bit wet or sticky or something where the balls didn't break well, it would be like watching grass grow."

The quote, plus a brilliant interview with The Mighty Pearl can be read here:

He's really loving pool. You gotta love this man :)

Earl for president!!!
