Why don't more bars lease Diamond pool tables?

We talked about revenue, food sales, quality of customers, etc. In the end she stuck with her Globals because 1) She would have lost money, she has free pool every day (11-2 M-F and 1-4 Sat-Sun), if she went with Diamonds this would go away and each game would cost $1 and she wouldn't have a say in it, as mentioned, they have good food and almost all of the people that come in for free pool buy food. 2) Although there's a lot of league play there, it's mostly APA, most of the higher level players (gamblers) play out of a pool hall about 1 mile away that has all diamonds (both 7' and 9') and she didn't believe that going to Diamonds would bring any new customers in as most of those players are perfectly happy playing at the other place. 3) This place can get rowdy on the weekends, I've seen more than one officer (or groups of officers) come in looking for people. It's not the kind of place I would go on a Friday night, it's just a big party. She decided that having that type of clientele with expensive tables would be a lose/lose situation.

I might have suggested replacing 4 or 5 of the Globals with Diamonds, the money would tell her which tables are best to have. We have several bars that have both Valley's and Diamond's, at all of these locations the Diamond's are always the preferred table even though they cost $1.50 per game vs $1.00 on a Valley.

There are plenty of them. Most are just a "gambler theme" with design cues similar to the Meucci, but I have seen them like this that are basically directly ripping off the famous Meucci design.

For many of us, we can tell immediately from a mile away.

When this guy said he was selling off a "large cue collection" it drew my attention. Does he know what he is doing? To someone that knows what they are doing there would be zero suspicion that this is a Meucci. None. Zip. Zero. Zilch. No excuses.

I had already seen this cue for sale on eBay so I went back to find it and look at his other cue ads.

Nothing of note there. But if this is a large collection, and it looks like this guy does not know what he is doing, I wonder what else we will see pop up for sale...and what he is asking.

It looks like his descriptions come from AI or AI based cue research.

I think he had this one at $400, and now it is $300 after finding out it is a cheap Taiwan copy here.

Wood veneer wrap as handle

I wouldn't ever do a one-piece wrap. I might do a segmented veneer wrap to incorporate the veneer changes into a design on an existing cue, but that would be an extremely rare occurrence that would depend on a lot of factors.

For every person who thinks a cue with a veneer wrap is cool, there are probably a dozen who would think it looks cheap. The two companies mentioned are not really known for building great looking cues. They have incorporated something in their manufacturing process that reduces the changes they have to make to their existing cues to drastically change the look. In other words, this is the cheapest and easiest way for them to create a 'new' line of cues.

If a person wants a cue that looks more consistent radially, as the OP mentioned, I would strongly push them toward a well-done radial segmented cue as there are actual benefits to that method of construction.

When this comes up I always wonder if there is any real "good reason" to do it.

Often people will ask about it because a cue has a wrap and they prefer wrapless "feel". The easiest answer is get a different cue. But if they really want that specific cue, just have it done with the finish over the wrap.

Then, if they are going for the wrapless look aesthetic, again, get a different cue. If you must have a specific cue, have the wrap finished over.

Years ago we had a maker on the forum selling "custom cues" It turned out his points, rings, inlays, and everything were veneers and he was hiding that. And he was doing it on cheap Taiwan imported cues. It makes me think of the old marquetry cues. That could be a thing...beautiful things can be done with veneers, but not if you are hiding it or being dishonest about the work.

As you said, those mass producers doing it are just creating a way to add options or models without redesigning a cue or building a different cue. It's cheaper. I didn't even know they were offering that! But I never look at thos cues, so how whould I know?

I suppose there are makers willing to do it to a cue if the customer requests it and they are willing to pay, and there are those who will just say no "I don't do that".

Just about any cue maker can do it. Fewer would do it.

I just don't see a good reason to do it anyway.

I know I generally hold my cue on the butt cap even with a 2 1/2" mid cue extension so my cue always feels forward weighted to me, I think.

How long have they had the 11 Globals and how do they maintain them, given rails and pockets cannot be "bought off the the shelf" as I've found out multiple times? Do they just get new felt over the years and that is it?
