Tournament fees are out of control

Speaking of tournament fees and whatnot,

What is the obsession with scotch doubles tournaments?

It seems every pool hall in the state has a hard-on for "1100 combined Fargo" scotch doubles tournaments. And you guessed it, they're all on 7ft tables, even though there are 9ft tables available. Fargo capped tournaments and scotch doubles will be the death of elite pool in the USA lol.

Imagine spending $1K on a cue, $800 on a break cue, and $500 on a jump cue just to say you beat someone in a race to 3 on a barbox.

Oh yeah and you won $95 for coming in 1st place. MOM!! GET THE CAMERA!!!

Can you tell I despise leagues? (sorry not sorry to 95% of players on this forum)
I hear that a lot, but then it seems like every time an open tournament is held, nobody shows.

If I were a TD, I don't know that I'd spend much time on them either.

I do hate the silly scotch double nonsense, but I just don't play in them...

Anyone know about Palmer cushions?

That logo was used on some of the KaoKao Taiwanese Palmers. That cushion is most likely from there too. I wouldn't even think of using old rubber if re-doing a table. New ones aren't that much.
Yeah that's what I decided to do. It's an older gandy so was a little worried about opening any more cans of worms by taking rubber off. Luckily just had to Bondo a couple corners where facings were properly installed at some point. Also didn't want to end up taking off $200 higher end rubber, even if old, with $80 tawainese rubber. The rubber was still bouncy and didn't crack when I got it off and folded it. Just surprised there's literally zero info on those cushions.

Can I get a little testifying

i broke shafts in my early years. but then they were just ten bucks a piece. they break with a light tap on the rail.

but also was a way of getting out the door if in trouble, as when they broke it turned the stick into a sharp spear.
no one wanted to face that.

there are enough stories of guys breaking an expensive cue and just sticking it in the garbage and someone getting to take it home and then fix it up.
ive seen a few palmers and balabuskas flying across the pool room into a wall. as well as pool balls and chalk.

a good way to get titlest wall cues in rooms that wouldn't sell them was to use one to play with and break it. then they made you buy it for 5 bucks or so. as you are going to convert it anyway.

Custom and High End Cues on the Decline?

Yep, I have found mine as well. Thanks Dean Campbell, aka Deano!
Dean Campbell is a friend and he turned me onto 2 cue makers 15 years ago.
Both are people I became friends with. One has since retired and the other
has gone on to become one of the most heralded names in cue making today.

Deanoc is extremely knowledgeable when it comes to cue making & personally
knew the top named cue makers. I think he has done a lot to promote pool. I
know there will be naysayers that like to bring shit up. Screw ‘em……Dean was
always straight and true in all my dealings and I was involved helping him on the
Bushka I and Bushka II special projects that was lots of fun and some great cue
designs emerged from those projects. I know since I got to view every cue made.

JK custom information ?

I lived in Taiwan for three years a long, long time ago.

I played pool and gambled there almost every day.

The cues they made back then were JUNK and I could have bought a boat load for next to nothing, but I never bought one.

Some of the companies make some really nice cues now, but there is still a lot of cheap junk that is sold worldwide.

I visit Taiwan every so often and I usually stay in the city where the better cues are made.

I plan on going to Taiwan sometime in the next six months, or so, and I am hoping to visit some of the places where the cues are made.

If I can find something I like and make some deals, I may buy some of their existing models or have them make some customized models to my specifications.
