Which balls to get?

Acros II..The best set hands down. Bright colors that pop, 99% phenolic resin, great design with bullseye markings on one side and the Predator Logo on the other and made by the best in the business Aramith. Used in professional tournaments the most I would say but the Aramith Blacks are used alot too. The only bad thing with the Blacks are with a quick glance in a dark pool hall you might miss over looking one of your balls in a runout..

not sure how Wu got any sleep last night and I maintain that the scheduling is a mess

Wu's safety game just collapsed in both execution and decision making, it's just nowhere near at the level of his potting,

Allen exposed that and Murphy is the right guy to take this even further with his own brilliant tactics and now dreaded break shot

Wu just needs to do what he does and fire in shots and avoid all Murphy's traps

best semis ever and finals could be the same

I'm looking at the # of matches won by season. The 23-24 season had zero Chinese players in the top 10. The 24-25 season had two in the top 10, and the 25-26 season has four Chinese players in the top 10. Including the 1st and 2nd spots.

partly explained with the selective participation by some british players..

Are Junior players being set up for a tough life?

I fell in love with pool and all its challenges at the ripe old age of 18. So I was a late bloomer and started far behind the future champions. I became obsessed with pool and in a period of three years went from a beginner to a “shortstop” speed. I was beating all the guys who used to rob me.

After maybe ten years of this life I became very disillusioned. When some of my pool hero’s began coming to me for small loans like ten or twenty bucks I knew something was wrong. My vision of a soft life playing pool became much more clear, and I knew I did not want to end up a poolroom bum in my 40’s and 50’s.

The good thing was that I had been paying attention to how the most successful rooms were being run during my travels, and the fact the owners of these rooms were doing well for themselves. My ambition shifted and within two years I bought my first poolroom in Bakersfield.

I still played pool and gambled but now I was making a steady income so the pressure was off. That’s what worked for me, and many other guys I knew found ways to make a living at pool without having to shoot the nine ball off the end rail!

Are Junior players being set up for a tough life?

Things are no longer as simple as "stay in school". The decision to pursue pool or not, has to be made by each individual taking into account their unique strengths and weaknesses for the purpose of achieving what they want.

As a teenager, I showed some promise in pool. Other promising young players from my area pursued pool, and I pursued education. Currently, I will have health insurance when I get cancer, and I live in a nice house, but I am not as skilled at pool as the kids that stuck with it. Many people would look at this situation, and say, "See, Dave made good decisions." Maybe, but that was twenty years ago.

Now, A.I. does portions of my job better than me. Undergraduate degrees have never been less valuable, and they are getting less valuable by the day. School loans (which most people need) are not dischargeable in bankruptcy. Is it a good idea to take out super high loans that cannot be escaped while A.I. creates downward pressure on wages or to work at all? Maybe not.

I share your worry about public education of our people. It's clear, at the population level in the U.S., we are lacking in some basic history and civics knowledge. However, I am not sure if follows that it makes sense for everyone to pursue degrees, especially if they have some advantages in achieving a high skill level in any discipline. I think this is particularly true for young men. (but that's for another thread).

It does seem to me, that many Americans who pursue pool as a profession, do not treat it as a profession. Turning Pro, by Steven Pressfield, is a book about turning pro in any discipline. I read this book, and it becomes clear to me that many American players who have a professional skill level in playing pool, still have not turned pro. American pool players do not have some advantages that some European or Asian players have. So what. In my mind, the American spirit is to consider your own challenges and look for a way to turn them into advantages.

Information on skill development in all sorts of disciplines is more available than ever. Information on pool is more available than ever. Traditional ways of making a life are more in danger than ever. If a young person wants to be a professional pool player, I am not sure it's a bad thing, especially if they have some environmental advantages (like access to free table time early in life or an adult who will help them along).

Some current professional players are showing ways to make a professional life in pool work (SVB, Fillers, Gorst, Yapp, and Biado). These players (and others) show there may be a future for player that treats their pool career like a profession and not an extended adolescence.

Like I told Shane one day a long time ago, “There’s room at the top if you’re good enough!” And it turns out he was.

Wasn't 23/24 the season most of the top Chinese players were banned for match fixing?

At the moment the only young player the UK has that looks destined for top 16 is Stan Moody. In 10 years time could easily imagine top 16 is Stan, whoever has the best longevity out of Trump & Kyren Wilson and 13 or 14 Chinese players

good question i would say it has been happening slowly, but for the chinese players to completely take over the european players, that will be in 20 years

they will mostly win tournaments against european players in 10 years

Damn! Just went back a little further and see that Allen was 45-0 in front at 16-14. Happy that my horse made it to the finals, but can't help but feel a little gutted for Allen.

same, was rooting for wu yize but damn that one felt.. that ball is gonna sting for the rest if his life, especially if he doesn't reach the final in the future (and time is running out, he's 40 something)
