You might want to reconsider playing the Pete Dye course unless you are a mountain goat. It is on the peak of a …. All right. Indiana doesn’t have any mountains. But southern Indiana has hills, and among those hills is this thing that sticks up in the air which even when you approach it from a couple of miles away you say to yourself, “What the devil is that.” And the Dye course is on its summit. I’ve walked the course twice for PGA seniors tournaments, one men’s and one women’s. There’s a par three on which if you miss too wide of the green your ball may eventually roll to the Ohio River. I’m old but in reasonable shape. I don’t believe I made it past the twelfth hole for either tournament. Of course the players walk a much, much more level path than the spectators do. You’re always in the middle of the fairway off the tee, right?
The person who said above that it’s not easy to get there is correct. If you want to relax, it’s the right place. There’s a casino. If you’re visiting, the German restaurant in Jasper is fun, as are the monastery and the convent in Saint Meinrad and Ferdinand. Well, maybe not fun but …you know what I mean. Also, the Orange County Museum in French Lick is charming. It’s tiny but high grade. It’s no more than a thousand square feet, but very informative. If you’re visiting and are with children, they would be delighted for that museum has a wonderful display of miniature circuses.
