9 Ball road player 1970s-90’s

I’m not sure if anyone in the Kansas Colorado Oklahoma and elsewhere but Jim Buss, played out of McPherson/Hutchinson/Wichita, has passed away May 26, 2026. He had just celebrated his 79th birthday the preceding Friday.
Jimmy and his brother Bill often combined where they wanted to travel to with the question Are there any good players around that want to put money on the table? Jim has told me countless stories. Crazy stories lol. He often said he didn’t know if he was hitchhiking to the next game or riding in a limo. And how rough it could be to have to fight to get his opponent to pay up. He worked as a bouncer for 35 years so he was very confident that he could back up his game. I especially liked the stories of where he played. From Papa Burks Steakhouse in Wichita were some really interesting stories. Also playing out of Bobby Well’s house-the wagers got large! Greg Matlock caught a game at Bobby’s that was more money than the tournament he was currently in lol! He played out of Vick’s in Hutchinson as well as the Cowboy Casino. Back in the day it was the largest nightclub in the area. Jim booked the entertainment there as well. A lot of people didn’t ever know what an accomplished musician he was as well. He would make money doing studio work and that took him on some travels as well. His most favorite player of the times was Buddy Hall. They never matched up because neither of them wanted to lose to the other. They respected each other’s game too much to sour it. Jim, in the 20 years we were married, did everything he could to pass on his knowledge and while I’ve improved drastically I knew I’d never have his skills. He developed those skills early in life playing at the local YMCA. There was a adjustable height stool on rollers that got the kids up so they could actually play. Pretty cool. By the time he was 14 he was at Shorty’s pool hall every chance he got. At 16 he went into a local bar and won so much he had to borrow Bill’s pockets to put it all I ln lmao. I will really miss him but his health had suffered in recent years and at least now he’s not fighting anymore.

Dynaspheres and WNT Launch Major Partnership as the New Balls of the Tour

I agree totally. The ugliest, most nonsensical ball set ever made, except maybe for the Aramith Black set.

EDIT: I just saw a set of dynaspheres in Vegas last week where the 6 & 14 were grey. You wouln't even see them on this WNT cloth. The rest of the colors were OK, with the 2 & 10 being a medium blue, and the 7 & 15 being cyclop robin egg blue. Make the 6 & 14 a kelly green, and this would be a nice set, visibility-wise
You gotta wonder where all of these ugly balls come from, is there an "ugliest pool balls known to mankind" contest going on that we are not aware of?? It seems every new set is worse than the last starting with the purple 5.

The 9-Ball Break

I'm playing in a tournament in a couple of weeks, my first is over a decade, and the format is 9-ball standard WPA rules, so 9 on the foot spot but with no break box. Would the cut break like used on the WNT events still be the best move or is there an advantage breaking from the side rail? I did some practice yesterday and was struggling with the consistency using the cut break. I'm not sure but I doubt we will be using racking templates for this tournament, so would that benefit the side rail break? An advice is greatly appreciated!!
Generalities are...generally true.

Need to see what is working on the table at the time you're using it.

Results vary greatly due to differences in cloth/ ball conditions + template vs wood ranch are also beyond major influences on outcomes.

Table size just might influence game experience too.

UK Open 2026, London, May 26-31

I like winner breaks + sets

The Predator events are great
They have a great format, I agree. But I think it's a great format for the likes of me and most people and a decent format for the players that play in it.

Anyway, let's just give it time - the 9 ball game at the pro level will eventually go back to alternate breaks for the same reasons that winner breaks proponents want winner breaks.

The 9-Ball Break

Side rail break even with kitchen rule is way easier to control balls than Matchroom break box break.
Take a look how Finnish Pros break from rail. Cueball not very close to side rail. Hit is very thick cut break. Lot of outside english and one ball comes 3 rail. Casper Matikainen is very good on that break and he won men´s European Champs 2025. He is very strong player but he mastered side rail break so he basically have ball in hand position on 1-ball after break 70% of time. I got 3rd on that tournament(Edit :where video is from lol. Not Eurochamps). lost 2 times to Casper and race to 5 he ran 4 run outs in row 2 times...
Login to view embedded media Try copy that break what these 2 pros are using :)(hint for practice try get cueball same position after break than they get. Then you notice how freaking thick cutbreak they are using...)
You have to watch video on youtube site. 5:23:40 final start time..
5:23:40 :unsure: 5:23:39 seems to be the end of the video on YouTube.

If you right click on the video there is an option to "copy video URL at current time" which will take you right to the desired point in the video.

Why doesn't Aramith do a better job with proof of authenticity with their packaging?

This guy has an eBay Store...brick and morter, too: Nielsen's Billiards.
Thanks and yes, I've bought multiple cases and accessories from Nielsen's and will continue to do business with them as they are a great company.

I usually get Instroke cases from them (for me and older friends that don't internet) and their inventory has been quite low lately, but that is probably another discussion another time what is going on with Instroke.

I did get this response from an Amazon seller that has the Aramith red circle at the best Prime price:

We get ours straight from Aramith, but the reviews are correct, they do vary in color. Even aramith’s high end pool ball sets vary in color. I have asked Aramith about that in the past and they stated that it is just the nature of the phenolic resin.

I guess this is another reason to go with Dynaspheres if Aramith does have that noticeable color variation in their resin (if that bothers you). I definitely like more of a whitish cue ball (the Dynaspheres is great and very consistent) with the Aramith red circle being the standard for most leagues and tournaments.
