Why aren't we talking about "Golf"?

I watch this group of guys play golf on the snooker table almost every day I'm at the hall (which is more than I should be I'm sure). Today I decided to pull out my BCA book and read up on the game...It sounds FUN!! Why don't more people talk about this game? Is it because there aren't many snooker tables or because we all like 9-ball and 8-ball too much? It sounds like a fascinating game, especially when you have more than 2 players. I'm thinking this game will replace cut-throat from now on if I go with a small group of people. Is there any really solid strategy for this game? Obviously the book tells you the basics, but it's rarely THAT cut and dry....
 
Back where I played in Binghamton, NY, Golf was a popular game with some people and played on a Gold Crown and not as often on a Snooker table. I've played it on both and the Snooker table was a lot more challenging. {read DAMN HARD}
Also, the rules vary from room to room and region to region a bit.

Golf isnt played here, but i hear its pretty ppopualr with a small group of people in omaha. I personally have never played, though ihave watched.
 
wouldn't practicing on a snooker table make you that much more lethal on a9 ,8, or especially 7 foot table? I think Golf could offer a simpler game than snooker but still help you train your eye on a LARGE table.

Golf in Fats' book on pool is played on regular size tables. Simple rules and alot of fun to play. I haven't played in years but I know I would enjoy it. When I was a kid the pool room I played in got on it and it ran for a long time.
 
The strategy of golf is simple...... move your ball to your next hole and not leave a shot that allows the next player the same option. Given the multirail banks involved in the game, this is A LOT easier said than done. A good player who gets on the 3 hole with the proper shape can run the rest of the holes alot of the time depending on the table setup. Speaking of which, most golfers prefer super tight pockets, tighter than standard snooker pockets even.
The liability game at Hard Times is infamous for the beast of a table that Ernesto set up.

It's so hard to find a good caddy these days...

I used to play golf at my local pool hall. But I got banned because I failed to replace my divots.

Only if you're using them on a pool table, too easy.

Playing snooker regularily will keep your fundamentals tuned up.

it wont mess with your stroke, but your aiming since they are lower radius

For the listings on findsnooker.com I've added notes about snooker tables covered with cloth more suited to Golf than to Snooker. If a snooker table is used primarily for Golf then it may also have smaller pockets. I would guess that many more of the listed tables are used for golf; I'd need confirmation of this.

If I remember correctly, McCumber mentions Golf in the book Playing Off the Rail.

My local room has a snooker table, but we always play golf on the 8 footers. I enjoy it, always makes for a good argument and somebody always gets pissed off and says they're not ever playing it again. But they will, it's all in good fun.:)
 
Around 7 or 8 years ago I joined the local Elks club, just to be able to use the pool room. My husband and I used to go up there a few days a week and play golf on the 10' snooker table with several other regular players. We would play $2/game + $.50/hickey.

I would often leave the place after one of those sessions saying that I would never play again because of the volitility! One of the regular players was an ex-cop, and known to carry a gun - there were several times I was sure he was close to using it!

Many friendships were lost or became very strained over those golf games at the Elks. :)

One of my best pool achievements happened on that table, though. I was the first player to run all six pockets in one inning, and that record still stands to this day as far as I know.

I stopped going when one of the regulars died unexpectedly in a freak accident. It was just never the same after that. I really miss that game, even if it was dangerous!
 
Golf action

:thumbup:Some rooms have more golf action than any other game. Ranging from 10/1, 20/2(most often), 50/5, 100/10. Sellout pays double. Gets tense when you get no help or get purposely hung out to dry and your man wins and you pay double. After a 6 hour game with 5-7 players that $2-300 that sellout pays stings. Winner collects from everbody else too. Good risk/reward ratio game.

Note: beware the game changing double kiss clanker and the well disguised 'partners'.

Great game-I love/HATE it.

Maybe Jazznpool has a story or two-I've watched him play pretty good against some of the big boys including Efren. Martin thinks and plays well.
I prefer doubles with an experienced partner who can keep me shooting the right shot. Mistakes are expensive for both of us.

The current rule in Tulsa is that the object ball is spotted at the head end of the table after the 3 pocket. Makes running out from the 3 hole very difficult.
