What's the deal with Meucci?

Like others, I can remember when (the 70's) buying a Meucci meant you were serious about the game. I loved mine and purchased another one when I decided to start playing again. It stays in the rack most of the time because it makes "tink" sound now when it hitting the balls. Drives me crazy.

As manwon and others have said, quality control and response to problems has left a lot to be desired and there are a lot of good alternatives when it comes to cues. Meucci says they'll stand behind their products if you treat the cue as they think cues should be treated but you hear a lot of stories and most are bad.

One of my favorite Meucci stories is at the following location:

Interestingly enough, I spoke with Bob Meucci about one month ago. We had a long phone conversation. If you know me, you know I'm the kind of guy who tells it like it is. I told Bob in no uncertain terms that his company had gone downhill fast. Poor product and even poorer customer service did him in.

He told me that he has not been involved in the business for about ten years (since 1997 I think he said). He told me he let others take it over. Now he explained that he is coming back to take control again. I told him he has a lot to overcome now, because Meucci has earned it's bad rep. I wished him luck and we'll see what happens next.

I do remember seeing Bob at the Meucci booth at the Super Expo about 7-8 years ago. ???

That is a gorgeous Meucci, Manwon! I too, like many on here was a Meucci fan - I am not a fan of the newer Meucci's but I have a particular fondness for the Jim Rempe series that was produced in the '80's. Actually, I just purchased a JR-5 and will be having it shipped this week. The JR-5 is the Meucci with the individual bricks inlaid in the butt and black points with white/red inlay. I actually have owned 3 of these before and have sold them in fits of stupidity!! But, I am now going to keep this one and alternate it in as a player. Why? I love the way this cue plays. Like others have said, if you get an older Meucci - they are no comparison to today's Meucci's. I wish you luck in your search - you will find one, but it will take time..... Best, John

After seeing a table full of factory seconds (Fac Sec stamped into the forearm) at the Super Billiards Expo in Valley Forge Pa last year, I would Never buy one. This is probably one of the biggest billiards trade shows where everyone shows their best stuff, except Meucci. How can you go there and expect to sell a table full of junk.

Get a McDermott, you'll be happy with it and the company has great customer service, but that's just my personal experience.

McCue Banger McCue

I didn't see Meucci at the Expo this yr. Maybe they didn't have enough fire wood to sell

I bought a rare old Meucci Originals cue at the SBE this year. I love the hit, just like I remember in 1985 when I was learning with a Meucci. Say what you want about the decline that today's Meucci cue represents, but don't forget how strong those old cues played. I've likened it to the difference between the "real" Balabushkas of old, and the GB's being made now. The list of Meucci champions is longer than any other and Bob himself has done a lot for pool.

I met him at the SBE at the only one I ever went to. I found Bob to be overbearing and an ass. Steve Lomax was in his booth with him, at the time.

I dont buy the "I havent been involved in the business" line. I know too many business people and they never just walk away. There is more to the story, but frankly, I just dont care. Just take that for whatever it is worth.

Secondly, I never found that older Meucci play great. There just wasnt alot of choices then as there are now. The older ones may play better than the current ones but compared to most low price customs or even several lower priced production should be eye openner for most. I recommend Lucasi for an entry level cue.

Saying the old Meucci play better than the new ones is like saying "She isnt as ugly as her sister.." That still doesnt mean she is good looking.

JMO,

Ken

Don't shoot the messenger Ken.

Never my friend.

By the way, do you ever make home to Cincy/Dayton?

Several folks here would like to play you.....

Ken

Line 'em up and I'll shoot 'em down. I did it once and I'll do it again. Actually there are several guys back there I have no business playing, like Jason Miller and the ilk. I will play any and all shortstops for fun or a little cheese. Maybe next time I come to Louisville I will make a side trip to my old haunts. Please remind me later this year. I'd love to go to Airway and Mike Medley's place in Cincy.

Did you know that at one time I owned 8% of the Fifth-Third Bank building in Cincy? Too bad I put all the money into the stock market just before the crash of '89. Only cost me about 200k. :frown:

Maybe we'll get lucky and have some decent weather next year. I think I'll fly into Dayton or Cincy first for a few days and then drive down to Louisville.

We carried Meucci thru the late 90's and Mark Patrick (his son-in-law) was running the sales end. Bob was rarely there.
A lot of the problem then was no communication between Mark & staff and the people on the shop floor making the cues.
Even the shop foreman couldn't answer questions on custom cue orders. Defective cues were returned to
their "repair" guy and even confirming that he received a cue for repair was a hassle.

When they started offering the black dot shaft a lot had to be returned for warpage (brand new cues).
They were outsourcing production of those shafts and according to Bob, brought production back in-house due to the quality problem.
We finally quit offering Meucci around '99 as it wasn't worth the frustration and number of returns for poor workmanship and materials.

I dont know how he can say he hasnt been envolved in the business...I saw him at the SBE 3-4 yrs back with his "Deflection" machine. HE challanged any cue to be tested next to his "Meucci" red Dot shaft. I went back to the booth and grabbed a cue and when he said the challange is still open I held the cue up. When he asked what kind of cue it was and I told him a "SEARING", he quickly turned the crowds atention to his cue in his machine...

In the mid 90's Howard Vickery and I spent a day with Bob at the Meucci plant/office in Sledge, MS watching cues be built and testing cues on "The Myth Destroyer". This was just before they introduced the Red Dot shafts. Bob is eccentric about everything, like a mad scientist, but a really nice guy....

The end quality then was still pretty good but I seen things there I really didn't like very well. They had about a dozen or so ladies assembling cues and they were using a cheap wood glue to glue in the inlays. Then I noticed the box the shaft blanks came in, they were from a supplier in Ohio. I'm not a forrester or wood guru but I know that there isn't much Hard Rock Maple in the Ohio Valley... I asked Bob about it and he said that all of there shaft wood came from Ohio and Missouri. I aked where he got the shaft wood for the older 80's cues and that wood came from the U.P. of Michigan, northern Wisconsin, and Minnesota. Ever been curious as to why the older shafts are so stout and the newer ones are so whippy? That's why!

I heard that he closed the big plant/office down in the late 90's and moved the whole operation out to a pole barn at his home/ranch/compound. Last I heard that is where they were still building cues so I find it hard to believe that Bob has been completely hands off......

I recall then saying they built a new building pictured here -

You should have seen the old building, it was at least 2-1/2 times the size of that one and two stories high. It was so big it was complete overkill......

Hey dont be sorry the truth hurts sometimes... i am thankful for the info.. though I am a new member I have been reading this forum for a while now and I trust what alot of you have to say
so how about this....
the older cues apparntley had something going for them.. when did the products take the nose dive? Is there a break point where it is ok to own one or should i just hang it up and go for something else ?
