Edwin "Bandido" Reyes Lives On

Thanks to everyone for their memories. I had hoped to meet Edwin someday soon. I think he was among the most masterful cue makers in the world.

This is a nice thread when he was introducing himself to the community:

http://forums.azbilliards.com/showthread.php?t=186

I hope the animals who did this die slow, horrible deaths.

I wanted to know more about Edwin, so reading that thread really helped. The man sure put together some fantastic looking cues and to read 21 pages of him sharing how he did it and answering each persons questions, was revealing of what kind of man he was.

Making a cue to him, was not churning out a cue, but a labor of love that reflected his own life at the time.

Some pictures of Edwin with friends.

I didn't know Edwin as well as all of you. I only spent a limited amount of time with him, but he always treated me like a good friend. We played pool together at Bugsy's one night until very late. I promised him a rematch.

I planned to hang out with him on my next trip over in May. He even asked for my help at the event he had planned the end of the month. He said I could do a book signing there, at his booth.

I am fortunate to have made so many good friends in the PI. Alex was the one who told me that it would be this way, and I would always want to come back. I even thought about making a second home there. I just wish it wasn't so damn far. :frown:

I am coming anyway later this month (in May). I hope to see many of Edwin's friends this time and reminisce about our buddy. I can't help but tear up when I look at his photos. He was so strong and so opinionated, much stronger than me. I promise to be strong for you my friend. I feel so bad right now.

Out of the shadows

We have to believe much good will come from this unspeakable tragedy.

The spotlights shine brighter now, and many shadows will disappear. May its diffracted light finally shine brightest on the path for the purity of play, as Mr. Reyes surely wants.

It is obvious to me that someone has ordered the hit. Somehow or somewhat the person(s) responsible for this is probably reading this forum.
Getting him killed in front of his family is inhuman. You're a sick motherf***

I have one thing to say, WHAT COMES AROUND, GOES AROUND. I have always believe in karma.

May You Rest in Peace Edwin!
Your hard work and contribution to the pool world is not forgotten.

OMFG!! seriously...wtf is going on. I never knew this man, but have heard about his work from many of my Filipino friends. The man is a legend, but....

How do we know, or what suggests that this was an assassination? What does the low-end, broken cue in the box mean? The man has contributed so much to our sport...assassination? what??

Why don't we do something here and make any of our knowledge available to the public, instead of suggesting at things!? AHhhh....

The family, my Lord. What they must be going through. All of his friends...wow.

Somebody, answers, please. I have had too many deaths this past year to not involve myself here. I need to know.

I’m not from the Philippines or have I ever been there. So this is just my opinion here and if those from that country feel I’m out of order here, I am sorry.

It doesn’t take a Dick Tracy to figure out that the Philippine pool scene is corrupt, run by (and suppose to be hush, hush) their mob with full knowledge of it by the police and government. Rumors have been going around here in the US for years that the mob is behind (stakes them, and not for even close to 50/50 either) a lot of the top Filipino players that come here.

If the police can’t or won’t bring these murders to justice, what other avenue do his friends, family, and business associates have? Even the mob in this country has an rule not to harm the targets family in a hit.

If the guilty are not caught and brought to justice I fear this won’t be the last of the killings. Reading between the lines in some of these posts you can tell that it’s not too much of a secret who did this. That being said, I hope they get the top guy that ordered this (always cut off the head of the snake) and the hit man that did it. Johnnyt

Low end broken cue means the perpetrators knows who he is hence the pool cue delivery. Mr Reyes would probably be less suspicious. hence they are able to get close to him and do the job.

Someone should check Mr Reyes mails to see if he was expecting this package. Maybe someone contacted Mr Reyes before to set this trap.

Also I understand Mr Reyes has just recently move into this new place where even some of his friends does not know the address suggesting that only few people have that information.

I hope justice will be done and not be brushed under the carpet like everything else.

Edwin would not go head to head against the personalities of the ex-BSCP executives if there was a mob known to exist within the industry. At the worst, perhaps there was access to mobsters outside of the pool scene. In the first place, there is no structured gambling system in pool here. The amount of gambling in Manila pool joints simply will not attract mobs. Secondly, the supply line of sponsorships is not a reliable source for mobs to invest in, especially when there is a shake up in the mother organization of BSCP, the Philippine Olympic Committee.

It was probably Edwin's chink in his armour to have easily reacted to personal attacks, especially when it comes to his craft and his integrity. He was a very reactive person, and he just did not care if it was the president of the country whom he was reacting to. It is no secret that he had openly exchanged heated words in conversation, posts, and text messages with a very influential Sebastian Chua. Now everybody has his finger pointed at Chua because Chua has the same weakness that Edwin had in openly reacting to personal issues.

I am giving Chua the benefit of a doubt because of the possibility that someone might have just used the open conflict between them as an opening to either put Chua as a prime suspect or just really in contempt for Edwin. In both cases, Chua would be a convenient suspect. But Chua would have to be too arrogant to allow stupidity to prevail... a though that does not rest well in my logic. It is reality that circumstances have put Chua on top of the list and he will have to deal with the headache of clearing himself.

It is a challenge to the police and many people are relying on their investigation. I try to detach myself from my grief and play "Dick Tracy" all day and what I write here is consistent with the spirit of how Edwin brought me to the forums for a cause. Perhaps I am talking out loud to pacify myself. Edwin and I could spend long conversations analyzing who had him killed, but he is just not around anymore. Evidence will surely come out and it will be Edwin's contribution to this discussion.

It is no doubt that Edwin's death will have its initial bad effects on Philippine Pool. BSCP was left without a single centavo for the sport and the new BSCP execs will have to row against the current without a crafty ore man in Edwin... worse, with the black mark of Edwin's murder. But Edwin's death will have to have meaning. He stood for fairness and his momentum should carry on.

Add to that the fact that it was reported to be a fake DHL delivery man in uniform that came to the door delivering said cue to a cuemaker and it just doesn't smell like a random act of violence. What are the chances a fake delivery guy with a cue stick in a box randomly knocks on the door of a guy who makes cue sticks? I don't know anything about the speculation of who may have done this but I watch enough CSI and Law and Order to know it it wasn't random.

Great, great photos of the Edwin and the PI pool scene being posted. It is not hard to see how many people he touched and how badly he will be missed not only by those that knew him but by all those with a love of the game.

Edwin will be sorely missed. Someone has to step up and organize the tournaments he was promoting.
I remember last August in Davao. Right up there in the NCCC mall, right in the corner of the bowling alley and pool room, Edwin had his laptop. The locals were fighting for qualifying spots to the Villar Cup. Right there Edwin with his familiar reading glasses doing the spread sheet. I greeted him. He said hello then later was asking if I knew of a hotel nearby because all the hotels in downtown Davao were booked. His young horse Takayama just flew in and had no place to stay. That was Edwin. He took care of pool players of all people.

There is finally a mention in the Filipino news about this senseless murder:

Close this MANILA, Philippines—Two men posing as employees of a cargo delivery service company shot dead an official of the Billiards Managers and Players Association of the Philippines (BMPAP) in his apartment in Quezon City on Saturday morning, the police said Sunday.

Superintendent Gerardo Ratuita, deputy chief of the Quezon City Police District’s Criminal Investigation and Detection Unit, identified the victim as Edwin Reyes, 51, of Barangay (village) Masagana in Project 4, Quezon City.

Reyes was the public relations officer of the BMPAP.

Ratuita said the gunmen, who were on a motorcycle, knocked on the gate of the victim’s house at around 10 a.m. Saturday and said they were delivering a cue stick.

One of the men went inside the house carrying a package while the other remained outside.

The alleged delivery man then handed over the package to the victim and asked him to sign a delivery receipt.

As the victim was signing the receipt, the delivery man pulled out a caliber .45 gun, shot him twice at close range, and escaped with his companion.

The victim’s neighbors rushed him to the Quirino Memorial Medical Center, where he died an hour later.

Ratuita said they have yet to determine the motive for the killing.

That last line can sometimes mean the police aren't ready to talk but more often means that they aren't looking too hard, at least here. That is the kind of language used when a low-life is taken off the board and the police don't really care who did it. Needless to say I am angry to see the sentence used concerning Edwin and hope it doesn't indicate the same thing there that it does here. I'm afraid it means the police have a good idea who had him killed and they aren't going after them.

Hopefully there is a different culture in the Philippines or something lost in translation.

I am one of the fortunate who had a chance to know and spent time with this man. I will always remember his generosity not with his money but more importantly with his time. He shared his life with everyone who loved pool. Rest in peace, we will miss you my friend.:frown:

Wow, my deepest sympathies to Edwin's friends and family. I had hoped to meet him someday and I am saddened by this senseless violence. I pray that justice is found swiftly.

Last time we met in December 2008, that's the photo I took at TriNoma Mall where QC Invasion was held. I still can't believe I will never be able to talk to Edwin again :(:(:( But he's alive as long as we remember him and as long as we FIGHT.

master! :(

This is one of the most well written and thoughtful posts ever!

What an awesome post!

Edwin passed away when I was on my way to the hospital just a few minutes after he was shot twice (.45 cal) by a DHL impostor. He did not get to complete the "s" in his signature when he was shot. On his lap was his baby girl. Inside the package was a broken cheap pool cue. When I was told that he passed away, I just had to stop by somewhere and collect myself. Edwin was a dear friend.

Edwin had his eccentricities. Like any artist, he had his flaws. Many times he was just a bit too domineering but it was only because of his passion. This kind of passion was the one that had brought him to be one of the best cue makers in the world. But isolating Edwin from his "position" here at home and internationally, Edwin had a good heart and he had integrity. He fought for fairness and not for greed. Edwin had integrity and he had no enemies outside of pool.

My first thought in the car was of Edwin's family. His eldest, Didoy, is 8 and his youngest has probably forgotten the face of the assassin by now. There are two in between. Nilda is lost in her shock. It has been a year when I arranged for the funeral of Edwin's dad. Today I arranged his.

Edwin had just come from Davao to relocate his family back to Manila. He was bent to re-focus and concentrate on his cue artistry. He was to fully join forces with Linds in cue production. After the new BSCP meeting yesterday, Edwin and I had a very long conversation. He concluded that he had done enough for Philippine pool and it was time to fend for himself. It is a fact that Edwin did not earn any money in any of his roles with BMPAP. He threw in his full time and attention to it.

Over Holy Week, he chose to drive his family from Davao to Manila, taking his time to enjoy all the stop-overs and scenery. It was his one full week of savoring his family. He chose an apartment in Project 4 because of its proximity to a school for his gifted Didoy. He moved in two days ago.

Edwin was a wise and intelligent man. Many times we would concede to each other's reflections. Today, it was just too late for me to make him concede to his error of accepting a package from DHL when nobody knew his address yet. It was a simple slip, my friend, but if you think about it, when someone wants to have you killed in Manila, many times, no amount of alertness can protect you. Error excused. Edwin was monitored sophisticated. He himself told me that his cell phone was bugged because it was acting strangely. I was warning Edwin to take the text message threats to him more seriously but he just laughed at them. He said it would be too easy to kill him because he was too much of a sucker to playing pool and he was not about to cut down on his playing. It was Edwin's time and he had to go. Shooting Edwin in the heart was very appropriately done because it was his heart that led him through life.

To the one who had Edwin killed, I know that you are reading this. The DHL delivery of a rotten cue stick was not a message to Edwin because he never got to see it. You have made your point to the group. I am grieving for the loss of a good friend, and the country had just lost a billiard hero who fought for a cause. Just please let it end with Edwin's demise.

Edwin, tol, I will always remember you as what you truly are. Our 2002 pact still stays - "if it is good for the players, then it is good for pool."
