12 year olds at the poolhall...

ok, not LITERALLY (I honestly wouldn't mind see more younger kids interested in pool); but this is just a bit of a rant....

Is it commonplace EVERYWHERE at poolhalls that most have hung on to the "my dad can beat up your dad" mindset?? What I mean is, you are playing someone, and win, and immediately after the excuses (no stroke today, all bad rolls, you were lucky, etc.) comes the, "I have someone for you to play".... and you can bet if they say it'd be a good match-up (suggested spot or no), you have ZERO chance.

I have found this true not only playing pool at the poolhall, but guys suggesting I play "their buddy" in golf (I usually have some type of golf cap on - PING, Titleist, etc.). One guy tried this with me (not telling me who his buddy was, but that he'd be there shortly to play league), and when his buddy showed up, we knew each other, and he laughed at his friend saying, "I can't play him in golf; he couldn't give me enough strokes". LOL

WELL, I HAVE SOMEONE YOU NEED TO PLAY - that one makes me laugh. Why can't YOU play me? There's always a way, well, except if I can't give him/her enough strokes :p :D

I know we (as in guys) are real stubborn about growing up, but can we lose the I can't beat you, but I know someone who can attitude?? I'm there to play, not tell you about someone I know, and how they could play you some....

Think Children should be welcome if they obay the RULE of the Room! Other wise like anyoone else they should be not allowed in!!!

: ) I know what you're talking about but I haven't heard it in awhile. Now I just can't wait for the next time so I can fire back with a whiny "Oh yeah? Well, I have someone who can play HIM! And his big brother!"

I just want to see the reaction.

Maybe that response will help you get the conversation back towards a "you and me, now" direction, though.
 
I was surprised to see a complaint more about these damned kids playing pool =)

The 12 year olds at the pool halls I go to are too loud, constantly run into you while you're shooting, play sucky music and generally loiter around doing anything except shooting pool. And if they do shoot you will need to come up off your shot to make room for them while they crawl around under your table looking for the ball(s) they just jumped off the table.

Actually to be fair that's more the 14-17 age group.

i have to hit this on two fronts. first i agree 100% i have this kid who shoots with me sometimes and it's the most annoying thing. he can't play that well so i usually beat his ass. if i do then it starts - i have a game for you, why don't you play x, y, or z. and out of those three x and y are local pros. well let's see i don't play them because they are pros and they would a)whip my ass into oblivion and b)they are pros - they won't give a "c" player the time of day unless it's for a lesson. and god forbid i am not playing as well as i should or worse not paying attention and this kid gets a game from me then it really starts. then i shouldn't be playing pool at all or i should give back my apa handicaps and quit the bca and the tournaments i enter should give me my money back. it sucks, it makes shooting when he's around almost no fun. the worst part is i try to teach him some stuff the other guys have taught me. the second front i need to hit is the litteral meaning of the title. we have one room that is a no smoking room and parents will occasionally bring thier kids in. now if your kids act like my girlfriend's kid and are well behaved and don't run around and act like jackasses i don't care. but if your kids are running around being loud and unruly GTFO! sorry off topic but i had to get that out.

At our old pool room we said it a little different.....I"ll play ANY UNKNOWN....and it aint gonna be for FREE! :D


I can't tell you how many times I heard this > "hey, wanna play some?....ok, how much?.....uh I just meant for nothing.....nah.....I don't have that much! :)
 
This story is kind of on the flip side. I had just become friends with a kid who was from another state and a pretty good shooter in his own right.
So he says to me one day that he want to play someone Straight Pool, who is good, because that is his strong game. He was just looking for competition so I call another friend who was at his room and he starts off with I'll spot you 125-25, (because it was for fun). So now my new friend thinks he's got an easy game, my friend who owned the pool room proceeded to torture him until 5PM because he had an appointment, the score was 115-9, the whole time the kid is looking back at me like "who is this guy" my response "be careful what you ask for"
 
I love hearing that.. Oh i bet you cant beat my frend me being a cocky person depending on the type of day i had i would say bring that Bi**h here. For me this goes on alot when i play on Army posts. The second words out of my mouth is race to five for fiftey and it turns out they dont play to much better than the othet person i just dusted:)

It doesn't have anything to do with money but ego. If you play the friend and beat him they have not lost face. They just blame it on the friend who lost. They don't want to play themselves even with a spot because they have to expose themselves to losing personally.

They also want to live out their fantasies through someone else's efforts without any of the risk and try to steal undeserved and unearned glory.. You see it all the time with pro sports. They say things like "WE" won", "We kicked their a$$". Who is the "We"? They did nothing but sit in front of the TV with a beer, but want to share the glory anyway.
 
I wonder if victims of Van Boening, Orcullo, Souquet and Pagulayan are told of "my friend that can whoop you" after each individual conquest.
 
#1 i agree pool halls should have more kids learning the game. :)


#2 I was talking with some friends last night about the pool hall in our town. It seems some of the players would rather not gamble just incase they were to lose. Last night there was a kind of big match up($200set 8 ball), well the 2 people drug it out til the pool hall was damn near empty when they finally played. It was like they didnt want anyone to see what happened.

#3 Isnt it cool to always have an excuse, i call it the american way.

to be honest, i have encountered a lot of childish and moronic things from people at pool halls, but I haven't really encountered this. I'm not sure why, as I can see how it would come up often.
 
I was traveling for my job one time and stopped in a pool hall on my day off and some younger guy wanted to play some cheap nine ball for $2.00 a game , his idea not mine and I beat him out of like $20.00, he got all steamed up and accused me of being a road player, I couldn't help but laugh at the thought of a road player showing his best game for $2.00 nine ball.

I told him to forget the $20.00, who cares, but he stomped out anyway, so like 30 minutes later his buddy shows up and wants to match up for $20.00 a game,I was not shooting well at all, I hadn't played for a long time but I had a day off, needed something to do and had plenty of money on me and didn't mind paying to see a guys real speed so I went along with it even though I had a feeling this guy was super strong, something about his farmers overalls and hick look made me wonder what was up.

So the guy plays me just even enough to let me win occasionally and after about 15 games I owed him a $100.00 so I told him I was going to settle up with him and quit and he proceeds to give me the 'lets play some sets for a $100.00 so you can get even speech" I told him no thanks so he starts offering me weight, I told him "you're playing me off just enough to keep me interested, I have been playing for 15 years and have been around, don't insult my intelligence speech" and I hand him the $100.00, he then pulls out his jelly roll and adds my $100.00 to it.

Meanwhile the guy I beat the $20.00 out of had showed back up and was taking obvious delight that I had lost $100.00 to his buddy, sitting there with a smug look, so I walked over to the bartender gave him $20.00 and told him to make sure these two guys had as many beers as the $20.00 would buy, the guy that beat me out of the $100.00 shook my hand and thanked me and I pointed at his buddy and said "oh, don't thank me, he paid for it"
and I walked out"

At first I thought the first guy might have been just setting me up for the fall but I concluded he was not smart enough to pull off a hustle and was just a poor loser wanting 'justice to be done'

In the end the idiot still lost $20.00 which was obviously important to him, I still had a few grand in my pocket and didn't care at all about losing the $100.00

I got this buddy from South Dakota who is a decent player....he occassionally plays a little pool on the weekends....he just came into a few dollars when he hit the lotto....he'd like to play you, but only for $10k, and he'll need the last 2 and the breaks....he goes by "Shane"

As far as golf, I've got another buddy....he plays a little golf when he can....he had to take a long time away from the game, his old knee gave out....since he had such a long lay-off, you need to give him a few shots a side....surprisingly, he also has some lotto bucks, but he wants to bet big too....I just know him by his nickname, we call him "Tiger"

:D

Cheer up mang....get down to Texas so we can play some....
