Black Marks On Balls

I have seen black marks made on my red circle cue ball by a friends Fury break cue. That cue has a black phenolic type tip on it and the black does transfer to other balls.

I can assure all you guys, that if I throw a ball into the pocket hard enough...with out the help of a cue, I can just about guarantee you there'll be a black leather dye mark on the ball if it hits the pocket leather just right;)

sure i agree. however you just said it. it has to hit just right and without the help of the cue. i suppose u mean cueball. no way youre transfering that much to the object ball

heres your test. take the say 9 ball. up it 2 or 3 inches away from the corner pocket and slam(shoot) it in using the cueball. use the same ball everytime and shoot the shot about 25 times. see how many marks are on there. ive done it. thats how i know its the tip and not the pocket.

just the fact these marks only appear on one ball, the head ball contacted on the break, kinda kills the pocket theory

btw majic said it first not me and supr. the first cue i noticed it with was my fury jb. then my omega jb now my jb i made. 2 canvas phenolic tips and 1 carbon fiber (omega)

the only constant is that your racking the one on the spot. The spot absorbs the impact from the cue and puts the mark on the one.

Cracks in cue ball

How about some cracks in the cue ball...This has to be the break cue right??

Maybe though it looks more like some of the cue balls I've seen in pool halls that ass clown bangers have spent time hitting with house cues that do not have tips! * Usually really macho types that have to hit every ball 1,000 miles an hour!

Wow, I really believe you. Just glad it doesn't happen on my table.:)

Black marks on balls from pockets

We used Kiwi Shoe polish on two tables, we still get some black marks on the balls, but at least these black marks wipe off easily unlike the ones we got before which you had to rub really hard with ball cleaner to remove. I am still looking for a better solution any ideas would be appreciated. thx Larry T

I have the same issue (although not a Diamond table) and it was suggested to me in another thread to rub the leather down with mink oil (and rub it in good). A couple of users said that worked for them. I will be finishing my table assembly over the weekend and plan to try it out on my new pockets.

Drop pocket table with the pockets nailed in or in some of the diamond tables i worked on with leather net pockets the ball was hitting the metel fastning plate for the blinds I just glue some carpet over the metal plates. Most marks on the cue ball from breaking come from the g10 tips harder then the phenolics.

The table is a Gold Crown with the Bosses in the pockets so its not from the pockets. It must be from the break cues.

Just for giggles check the pockets were the screwheads are and see if the backed out I had a table were the screws were changed and the heads were to high and the ball made contact with it. I'm sure yours is fine since this cueball is made different then the rest of the aramith balls wieght wise they are close but quality and type of constructiuon are different.

@ the local poolhall we use the same balls and alot of people use the phenolic tips and I use a g10 and most of the balls dont have that mark in them there are a few not like yours Goldcrown 4's with centinial and measale ball.

I also have a gold crown and I sometimes get black marks on my object balls that must be coming from the black plastic pockets. I know its not coming from my break cue since i have a white diamond tip.

How many people actualy use a ball polisher to keep there balls fully polished before and after they discover the marks? I think some people are just wiping them with a towel and that is not enough to truely polish the balls.

Does anyone clean there pockets of the grime & oils?

I think if the balls & pockets are cleaned and/or polished you would get less marks and balls coming out of the pockets from everything being clean and slick.

Remeber some marks do happen just like on the cloth hit a ball at breack speed about 20+mph with rotation it might generate enough heat to transfer some marks from the pockets leather or plastic. After all you see the marks on the felt were the ball sat at tack off from the break.

Check you tube several videos on heat transfer from friction of the balls sliding before rotation and at the impact from th etip to cue ball.

Craig makes a great point about the balls being clean. If the balls are not they will certailny pick up more marks.

I also have a diamond Pro Am table and when I hit a ball with some force it also leaves a black mark on my ball's, I was told it was from the pockets being shipped before they were curred and do do the shoe polish trick, Havent been able to find the right stuff yet, But I will post the results.
