I get sooo tired or hearing about how low-life pool hustlers are when it’s so simple not to get hustled. Don’t play anyone you don’t really know his or her speed for money…or don’t gamble on pool at all. Now that seems simple enough for me. Some people on hear and in poolrooms and bars act like they should be protected in some way from making a bad game.

Who protects us from all the salesmen that promise you the world before you buy, then are nowhere to be found after the sale? Who protects us from the financial planers and stockbrokers? Who protects us from the pharmaceutical companies with new meds that have deadlier side effects than the problem there suppose to be fixing? Who protects us from the lying, stealing, hustling politicians on both sides of the aisle? Then you have the fine print and guy talking 100 mph as low as he can get away with on TV telling you the negatives of the sales pitch because the government says they have to be honest…HA!!

So the next time you see a hustler, think what you do for a living, or your parents, or relatives. And if you are a priest or minister…well just don’t even get me started on that.

BS! I don't consider hustlers the world's low life, though some of them qualify, the people they gamble with for the most part want to gamble and want to take them for a ride, so they get what they deserve. Hustlers aren't like thieves, or even con men, I consider what Bernie Madoff did much more low life than anything a hustler does. However, don't go making them out to be some kind of frigging heroes! The hustler is at best somebody taking advantage of somebody doing the same thing as them but less well. I agree it is simple not to get hustled, I don't gamble and therefore don't get hustled.

Just a guess but I would say that probably way over 95% of hustles hinge on the other person's greed. If they weren't trying to scoop up some easy money they wouldn't have gotten burned. I ran a con type hustle twice in my life back when I was young and stupid. I still regret those to acts.

I hustled a few thousand other people that got dollar signs in their eyes and thought they were hustling me and I gambled with as many more people that were gamblers too and we both knew the score. I don't lose any sleep about betting with either of these two groups. I won a lot more than I lost but that was what everyone I played was trying to do too.

Johnny, it says something that even when you try to defend hustling, you compare them to greedy stockbrokers, lying politicians, and irresponsible pharmaceuticals.

I think you know in your heart there's something sleazy about it. Whether or not something is sleazy has nothing to do with how easy it is to avoid or how likely you are to get away with it. It's not right to steal something from my house even if I fail to lock my door. It's not right to stab someone even if they went into a dangerous area. Some things are wrong regardless of how dumb or careless you think the victim is.

I am not asking for "protection" from people like you. I am asking people like you to be honest and decent to other human beings. Then I won't need protection and I won't need to watch a guy shoot for a month before I dare play him for a buck. I can gamble knowing the other guy is gambling too, and not fleecing me.

You seem like a good guy, but it sounds like something touched a nerve... something you read or heard recently. Maybe it touched a nerve because your conscience is trying to get your attention.
 
The thing about most pool hustlers is they will walk into a casino with their pool winnings and play a game which is stacked against them. I'd say pool hustlers are less successful than most other people who are hustling out a living when it comes to keeping their cash.

I wasn't comparing it to hustling, I was saying what those people do are far worse than hustling a few people out of $100's. Those people bilk billions of dolars from unsuspecting people, mostly seniors.

I was not a good guy for most of my life in most peoples eyes. As I got in my 50's I changed for the better. I still will hustle someone out of money on a pool table if I can. I just won't go out and beat the bushes to do it anymore. Johnnyt

If you were in a room full of stockbrokers, financial planners and pharmaceutical executives and asked how many of them had slept in the back seat of their car or had to get a walking stick because they were broke, I suspect the number would be close to zero. They might be hustling but they aren't gambling, at least not with their own money.

Well, I get what you're saying. But there's always someone doing something worse. I'm sure a lot of dudes who get caught stealing say "well it's not like I killed someone".

A guy who runs almost 100 on a barbox seems like someone who can just enjoy the game for what it is. You can get something out of pool even without an opponent, you don't seem to be one of those guys who has to have money on it to enjoy a match. And you aren't gonna sleep in a car if nobody bites. Why not finish that positive change you started at 50...?
 
I used to own a very collectable Porsche...believe me, the hustles in a pool room are much easier to spot than the ones I received from people who wanted my car.

(edit) I'm a lousy pool player, working to get better...but I know I'm bad at the game. Sure makes it difficult for somebody to hustle me...especially when I won't play for money.
