Hypothetical :

Your a top level pool player , during the same week of the year the "World Chamionships of Pool " are held at the same time as an Open Reginal Tour event.

The Championships are an honest real World Championship , First place is a Trophy and recognition (no money) and the Reginal Event has a six figure purse that's spread over say , the top 5 finishing spots. Perhaps the next 5 spots after that recieve a nominal cash payout.

Which are you going to play ?
 
Obvious answer would be go for the money but then everybody else would be there too. So if your interested in the glory of having your name in that still non-existant pool records book go to the WC's.
 
You would make more money in the long run having the "World Champion" title to help you market yourself and get invites to future events.

The most profittable pool players in the game today do not make the bulk of their money off of tournament winnings.

It'd have to be real 'Championships' tho , which is what I'm suggesting here btw.

Just how could it be a "Real" World Championship since every high level player would be at the money tourney goin' for the dough? :grin-square:

The world championship's eventual winner would have no credability due to the fact that the field would be a group of locals from whatever area it was held.

Exactly correct. Let's not fool ourselves, there isn't any prestige without the money or the greatest players. Anyone can slap a title on a tournament and call it what they want. Doesn't mean that is what it is.

In baseball, we have called it the "World Series" for decades, but this is truly incorrect. It's marketing plain and simple just like "world famous BBQ" or the "worlds greatest burger".

IMHO, the closest thing we have to a World Championship today is the all-around at the DCC.

Like it or not, the IPT may have been the closest event ever to proving the greatest in the world. The large prize money (illusion or not) drew the best of the best. The qualifiers gave everyone in the world a chance to make the field. The races were long and stamina was definitely a factor.
 
it's not a fair question because you skewed it heavily to make the "Open Regional Tour" option more attractive.

They never have world championships (honest, real ones) with literally NO money.
Usually a world championship is a 5-digit payout.

And you're throwing in a LOT of money (a rare amount) for the regional event. Six figures? And only the top 10 get paid? For a 'regional' event? So top 5 each are probably making 5 figures? Even the US open only pays 5 figures to the top 3.

Totally biased poll. Redo it if you want to get a fair answer to your question (which I guess is - would you rather have a world championship tournament title or a lesser title that paid more money)

Not that I intended it to be overly bias , I just wanted to have the choice be a black and white to clear confusion. But that was the point I was curious about. How 'stereotypical' are pool players ? They all talk about growing the game , making it competitive with other high profile sports , wain about the lack of true nationally govern tours and events and how all the real 'championships' are BS.

But , is the real truth that all they really care about is the money?

Are they really willing to make sacrifices for the greater good or only for thier good? :)

Going back to your original premise that it is a valid world championship, if I am a typical pool player I still have to head for the fast money. The world championship might pay dividends in the future but it doesn't pay bills or put beans on the table today and very few players can afford to think long term and greater good. That doesn't mean they are short sighted or greedy just forever living with the wolf not far from the door.
