Jay...

When I read your original 'bashing' post it seemed that there was a link between you not being offered the job and your feelings about the tournament in general. With both issues being addressed in the same post it looked (to me anyway) like your very reasonable questions about the payout's, etc, were maybe generated by and tied to, hurt feelings. This made your post seem like bashing. I thought it was bashing and was very surprised as that's not the way you usually approach things. As I read posts later in the thread I was able to seperate the two issues and see that your concerns were/are valid and did not constitute bashing... especially when seperated from your employment status with the event.

That's my take.

I hope that all the reasonable questions will be asked in as positive and helpful a tone as possible and I hope even more furvently that the answers to these questions will be thorough and straight-forward.

I'm making reservations.... (even though I have some).

Jay responding to someone’s concerns in the Sarah Rousey thread:

Jay responding here 3 months before the event:

Jay,

You are a knocker by your own definition. The question is, why? Why knock something that could be so good for the players. Every tournament out there has payouts based on turnout. Why not help get people here and make the payouts better?

Ray

There is a HUGE diffence between the questions and concerns I have and the negativity regarding the WWC. If you can't see that, then your comprehension skills are suffering. It's a pretty big stretch to compare my concerns about the Galveston event and what was said about the WWC. But go ahead if it makes you feel good.

looking at the discussion

A quick look shows that there are damned good people on both sides of this discussion, folks normally aligned with each other. As admitted, I wander back and forth a bit. The promoters are fans of keeping their business to themselves and that does arouse skepticism, speculation, and doubts. Pool players have been through too many rodeo's already not to be at least a little suspicious when they can't understand what is going on.

Some know more than others and the people that know most seem to put the most faith in the people putting on this event. Those down in the cellar with the rest of us mushrooms tend to be most skeptical. Hopefully between the live talk Monday night and the information scheduled to be released now we will all get on the same page.

I definitely am casting no blame on anyone in this discussion. I will say that at this time I see no similarity to either the IPT or the recent WWC charlie put on. If these folks have mystery draws that seem biased or don't pay cash at the end of the event or pay within days afterwards if they are deducting taxes then I will have to start making comparisons. Too early for that in my mind.

I am adding a few questions to my list though: How will the draws be handled? Public or private? When and how will monies be paid out?

I think we all just want to see a quality event and none of us want to be taken over the hurdles. The more secrecy or the more it seems that the promoters are operating by the seat of their pants making things up as they go the more skeptical some will be. However these people putting on the event have already committed a huge amount of dollars. Hopefully they have put in the time and planning to match.

Jay,

You are obviously scorned here. My reading comprehension is just fine. I made no comparison to the WWC. I only quoted YOUR definition of a knocker, and you're a knocker. If anyone was making an unfair comparison it was YOU trying to compare this event to the Hopkins tournament! LOL. They are so different, there's no point in even detailing it. You weren't hired, you're not coming, we get it. Your bashing, not questions, are very ugly coming from someone with your "reputation".

Ray

Well, I watched the insidepoolmag vids and looked at the site and I guess Lou won't be going to play since staying to the last day appears to be a deal breaker for him. I'd say that's one that's to late to change now but could be better thought out for the next (hopefully) event.
By the way this ONLY seems to effect the one pocket, womens and amateur 9-ball.

Nice try but no sale. Asking questions is not my definition of a knocker. That one belongs to you. My questions have nothing to do with anything other than wanting to find out more about this event and how certain things will be handled. There was never any discussion of a job at any time. And if there had been, I'm not that thin skinned anyway. So please don't flatter yourself.

A good reputation takes a long time to earn Ray. We are judged by what we say and do. So be careful in your choice of words. The tone of your post above speaks volumes about you.

One of the ways I earned whatever reputation I have in this industry is by not being afraid to confront an issue and ask questions that are on people's minds. And this is one of those times. I'm proud of my "reputation" and I appreciate the compliment..

not sure about this

Not sure if this is accurate but I think only the finals of each event will be held on Sunday meaning you won't have to hang around unless you are guaranteed at least second place. That might not be such a bad deal if you know early on that you are cashing nicely.

One more thing to confirm in Monday's talk session.

Jay,

Post your questions. To this point you have asked no questions.

maybe we need a new thread

Ray,

Would a thread to put together some questions be helpful? Might keep the sudden early onslaught of questions from overwhelming whoever is trying to answer them and keep the same questions from being asked ten times. Give them a little forewarning if they need to check numbers for some answers too. Just a thought.

True. They did say "finals".

Basically the only things they need to clarify are 1) if they have a plan for field payout based on entries (I'm sure they do), 2) if so how is it structured (portion of field paid), 3) will field payouts occur at the end of each competitions semi finals .

Beyond this I hope they DO NOT make any comments on payout based on their "ASSUMPTION" of the fields size being large. ( Because pool players ARE "meme" types who would attempt to hold them to ANY perceived promises no matter how well intentioned. JMHO :frown:)

Ok, I have started another thread for questions that we can ask the promoters.

Now.....back on topic. I will be going to this event. ;)

I strongly agree. They could give an example based on say a 64 man field but I think they need to be very careful how they express any payout based on entry fees being sure people understood it wasn't more than an example. I understand first place to be written in stone and the rest of 25% of the field paid based on entry frees. I don't know what percentages they are paying each place or what kind of formula they may be working with to recoup some or all of first place payouts.

I do hope to have a clearer understanding of payouts after Monday's discussion but like you I do understand that dollar figures can't be given when entries won't be known until the last minute.

I may be going as a spectator to this event. Don't know yet. Would love to compete amateur but doubt I could put in the time to get up to snuff (don't wanna look bad :embarrassed2:).

Starting to look like a profitable venture

Ray,

I am planning to come a day or two myself. It is looking like I might even turn a profit on the deal now. Considering the people that have offered to buy me a beer or three and the savings on beer I don't buy for myself here I think I will be in the black on expenses!

Staying to the last day means you are in the FINALS. Lou would stay for eternity if he knew he was going to be in the finals of a major one pocket tournament like www.theworldclassic.com :D:D:D

You've got me for beer until I run out of money.

oh yeah, no doubt I'd hang :-)

BUT, the real intent of my question was: if the 1pocket starts on the 11th, (as they say it's going to) and the finals are going to be on the 20th (as I've heard), is the whole event going to be s-t-r-e-t-c-h-e-d out over the whole TEN days? OR, are only the last two or four guys standing going to be forced to stick around. OR, is the 1pocket event going to start on the 11th and be played out, say, over the course of three or even four days. If the first round gets played the 11th, and round two isn't until 14th and round three the 16th, and so on and so forth, that would be bad.

That is probably a question for Ken, the tournament director and the answer will probably depend upon how many entries they have for the one pocket event but I was told that the events would not be stretched out over the ten days and that each event would be played out normally and that ONLY the finalists will be held over to SUPER SUNDAY. (You should be so lucky, errr good) ;-) I don't remember who told me that tidbit of information. I may have seen it on one of the videos, I'm not sure.
