OB-1, OB-2, kind a long.....

Most of you know that I play with a Mike Bender cue and some of you know that I have been playing with a 314-2 shaft for quite a while.

I have liked the reduced cue ball deflection of the 314-2 and have gotten over some of the negative perceived idiosycracies of the shaft (feel, sound etc).

I have used OB Cues product in the past but the OB-1 shaft I used had a unique taper (Earl Strickland taper) which was a bout 20" straight leaving about 4 inches of conical taper. It played like a dyslexic magic wand. You never knew what was going to happen to a shot and I finally gave up on it.

I decided to give both of the OB shafts another try and I was a little reluctant to try the smaller diameter shaft on the OB 2. I don't like little pencil shafts. When I placed the OB 2 shaft on my Bender cue, the
11.75 mm shaft didn't look all that small, because the taper is cone shaped and I had also made a committment to give both of the OB shafts a real chance. (It is hard to switch equipment when you are not playing too poorly.) I wanted to put aside any perceived negative thoughts like (looks, feel & sound) while using the shafts. I wanted the performance of the shafts to speak for themselves.

The first night I tried out the two shafts was the handicapped tournament at Buffalo Billiards, racing to one, DE. I screwed on the OB 2 shaft because I figured I wouldn't play very long with it because of my predispostion to not liking narrow shafts. (remember I was trying to put aside my bias) The shaft barely screwed together and as I forced the shaft and the butt together, I realized that I was using all of my strength to put it together and started fearing the thought of taking it off. I started imagining the scew on my beloved Bender stripping out about the time that I missed a shot that I could have made one-handed. Since I had not hit a ball before the tournament with the new shaft, it wasn't really a good test so I lost another game and retired from playing for the evening and grimaced as I strained to unscrew the shaft. The next day I called OB cues to complain and they offered to fix the problem but also suggested me to try something else locally. I did and for the most part, the shafts screws on although it is VERY snug, I no longer shudder at putting the cue together.

The next night I practiced alone, hitting power shots and bank shots at full speed and then some. Many of the shots were shots that I had trouble with in the past and I started to make virtually all of them. My euphoria of playing well with new equipment is nothing new to me and I had to caution myself about writing anything about the new shafts but I was starting to like the OB 2 in a new kind of way. In the past, I have used a cue for the first time and liked it a lot only to find out in days to come that it wasn't all what I had hoped for so I laid low on my report.

On Friday, I played in a handicapped one pocket tournament and got beat by Eddie Brown getting substantial weight but only by a small margin (race to 2 SE). It could have gone either way so I wasn't overly concerned about the performance of the cue and myself as Eddie can and does put a lot of pressure on his opponents. I am happy to say that my road dawg, Paul Laplace put the ants on Eddie and won the tournament. :p

I came back later Friday night and hit balls for three hours straight practicing ten ball fo the Gem City Classic coming up July 10-12. I have never played ten ball before and I played the ghost and it was downright embarassing. I played on an old cloth TIGHT-AZZ Diamond table that would rather spit out balls than to have its cloth vacuumed. It gave me fits all night long until someone mentioned that the table had been playing extremely tough for a few weeks. That gave me a little solace but I wasn't happy with my inability to show the Ghost, I had a little heart and he beat me unmerciful for 3 hours. I would break and NOTHING would go in on the break. I bet I only made 5 balls on the break and only one at a time, the whole night.

Anyway, on Saturday I had some honey-do chores to accomplish and I was worn out from a full day of manual labor and decided to take a nap which lasted about 2 hours. I didn't realize how tired I was. One of my competitive practice partners was there when I arrived. It was 9 o'clock pm and he immediately racked ten ball which was a sure sign that he was ready to play me a match or two. He had not seen my OB shafts and inquired about them because he knew they were coming soon. I pulled out the OB 2 shaft and put the cue together and let him hit a few balls and he said he liked it so we started playing and while I had some personal breaking problems and the usual missing problems (on that BAD-AZZ Diamond table ) I started solving some of those problems. It was then that I realized that I hadn't even given the OB 1 a chance to play and that it was still in my case, nor did I want to give it a whirl. I then realized that my Predator 314-2 was not missed either.

Now keep in mind, this is only my perceived observations and no scientific experiment, but when I practiced hitting shots at 20 miles per hour it seemed that I was pocketing FAR MORE of them with the OB-2, than with the 314-2. I also was banking balls FAR BETTER as well. I beat my opponent who was having an off day because he wasn't playing regularly and I think that the OB-2 will be my shaft of preference for a long time. I tried out the cue ball deflection test where you put the cue on the head spot and shoot at the foot middle diamond with side spin to determine how far the cue ball squirts and I was AMAZED at how little the cue ball squirted. I don't use much side spin unless it is really necessary but my margin of error has been greatly reduced and I am fairly certain that the shaft helps me shoot the cue ball in a straighter path than I have ever shot before, regardless of whether it is a power shot, a spin shot or a finesse shot. The OB 1 will sit in the case until I have used up all of this new found enthusiasm the OB-2 has provided me with and that may be a long while. I did manage to hit a few balls with the OB 1 and it hit nicely but I am currently enthralled with the OB-2.

For those of you who are considering trying out a new shaft I would recommend the OB 2 shaft if you have been playing a while. If you are relatively new to the game or have an inconsistent stroke, the OB 1 might be a better shaft for you. I haven't played with a Z-2 and probably won't be for a while because I just don't want to spend any more money on cue shafts for a while. I must have 6 shafts for my Bender and don't want to spread myself any thinner. The OB-2 without a doubt has increased my potting skills especially with power shots, banks and spin shots of that I am certain. I am kind of shocked that I got the results and feel the way I feel about the slightly narrower shaft. None of this will probably help my cause at the Gem City Classic :embarrassed2: but maybe my report will help provide you with information that might help your game. If you do try out the OB-2, try to put aside any negative thoughts about looks, feel, hit and sound and you may be surprised too.

I would also be very curious to hear from other AZBers who have used the OB 2 shaft and what your experience has been.

Thanks,
JoeyA

I'm currently playing with an OB-2 on my Josey cue, and I like it a lot.

On top of that people should be aware OB Cues has been doing a lot to support this game.

Joey, I have been playing with the Tiger x shaft for the past year and a half and have been very pleased with it. I have also in that time period played with the OB1 and the z shaft but for me they were not satisfying enough for me to want to make the change.

I had been trying to get someone to loan me an OB2 shaft. I wanted to try one before buying. It seems that the other shafts that I have bought and finally decided to resale I had to take a loss on them. A good friend of mine just recently bought an Ob2 shaft from John Schmidt in Victorville, Ca. He loaned me the shaft last week to play with it as long as I wanted. But I haven't had the chance to put it to the test because I've had a cold all week.

I am now starting to feel better and expect to put it to a full test this week. I will give my opinion on it next week. From what you say it sounds encouraging. If I like it I will surely buy a blank one and have it fitted to my Schrager. What tip do you have on yours?

Frank,
I hope you continue improving and look forward to your opinion.
The shaft is straight out of the box with an Everest tip. I had to make sure to dispense with all of the BS about the ferrule looks like a striped tiger, it sounds like a dud, it feels dead and it looks strange. Once I got those things compartmentalized I started watching what the shaft did and how the balls went in the hole more often. Spin? I don't worry about spin. I don't use much and with this shaft I get enough to satisfy any shape that I choose.

Mike,
If you are playing with one, I guess I made the right move. :D Seriously, I know you pay attention to the smallest details and if you are using one, it obviously is helping your game.

I have to agree, you don't have to look far to see what this American manufacturer does for pool.

I'm kind of embarassed that I didn't get past the Earl Strickland taper. Someone stole that cue with the ES taper and I guess everything turned out the way it was supposed to.

I actually read the whole post of yours, and I can see that I will need a lot more weight from you in one-pocket and also maybe a ball or three in 10-ball next time we meet.

I am currently playing with OB-1 and I am loving it. I tried the OB-2 for just a few minutes once, but since I am very satisfied with my OB-1 shafts I didn't bother to try it more. I recommend OB-shafts to everyone I meet :)

I'm a few months into an OB-2 and realy enjoy it. I had an old 314 before that, for years and was happy. I think I just changed to try it and have enjoyed the results. Can't wait for the long term results...

i've been playing for more than a year with an OB-1 and just got an OB-2 a few months ago. so far i still prefer the ob-1, but i have to give the ob-2 some more time. either way, both shafts are great! can't wait to try the ob break shaft now...

I am happy to say that my road dawg, Paul Laplace put the ants on Eddie and won the tournament. :p

Put the "ants" on?

I like that expression! lol

Good analysis on the new cue. I'll consider it when you beat me. :D

Roy, I can spot you a little weight, maybe five or ten pounds. You know how big all of us Americans are as compared to the Europeans.

Hmmm, I may have something to say about that statement.

Anyway, I am playing with an OB 408 cue with an OB-2 shaft on it, and I love it. I previously have tried the Z-shaft, but got the "toothpick" feeling. I dont get the same feeling with the OB-2.

When I changed from OB-1 to OB-2, I kind of saw the balls better using this thinner shaft. Especially when the CB is frozen to the rail, its easier to make the shot than before.

At least that what I keep telling myself, so it really doesnt matter if its true or not.

It also helps that Royce and his team in USA + Kendo Cues in Norway always are very accomodating if a special need should occur.

I bought, and have been using, an ob-1 shaft since around the time they came out and I loved the way it hit, but I had only one complaint with it. I like thinner shafts and I couldn't turn the ob-1 shaft down past 12mm because the ferrule is too thin. Well, I am glad Royce took my advice to make thinner shafts, because I just played with an ob-2 the other day and it was like love at first hit.

The ob-2 shaft is the best hitting shaft I have EVER hit with bar none. I am getting mine this week as well as having a leather grip put on (instead of that crappy Irish Linen).

Joey,

I have had experience with several of the laminated shafts. I played for at least a year with one of Annie-o's laminated shafts and fell in love with it fro the start. I would still be playing with it if not for two unfortunate events that seemed to align the planets to keep me from using an Annie-O laminated shaft.

1. All of my cues were stolen over a year ago along with my vehicle and have not been recovered.

2. The untimely death of Annie Mayes; thereby making it virtually impossible for me to replace it.

Since then, I have settled on the Predator 314-2 after a brief but unsucessful stint with an OB-1 shaft. (I never could get over the soft hit and the unusual overall look of the OB-1).

I now have 4 different 314-2 shafts. One for my Jerry Olivier which is my current playing cue, one for my Schon and 2 for my Predator SE-17.

Hi Joey

I have a P2 with an OB-2 shaft and I love it. Before the OB-2 I had the OB-1 and was very happy. I am not changing it back. I have also plaeyd with 314s and Zs and the OB-2 is my absolute favourite.

PS, it took me a good 2 months before I learned what I could do with it...

Joey, that's a nice writeup. I'm also loving the OB-2 on my Josey. I first started with the 314 shaft (several years ago), then went to a Z-shaft, then I tried the OB-1 when it came out. When I got my Josey cue a couple of years ago I used the standard shafts until the OB-2 came out. I decided to give it a try because I thought I would like the stiffer taper. It has been great, I don't envision changing shafts anytime soon...in fact I bought a spare. If you like medium tips, you may want to try a Mueller's Dudley on it. The original Everest was OK, but mine delaminated so I tried a Dudley. The Dudley tip is an awesome combo with the OB-2, it really grabs the cueball great and hasn't mushroomed at all since I installed it.

Jingle,
I have used a lot of Everest tips on different shafts and none have ever delaminated and I use one of those scuffers shaped like a World War I soldier's hat, maybe it's called a Wilson scuffer. No mushrooming either but I will keep the Dudley tip in mind if I ever decide to switch.

I'm sorry about the theft and your cue maker's death.

A good Filipino player in New Orleans says the same thing about thinner shafts but "it doesn't matter if its true or not" :D He says he can see the cue ball better with a thin shaft and that "fat" shafts get in the way of his visual picture of the cue ball. Hope you enjoyed your visit to the Philippines. Come pass a good time at Galveston, TX in September.

Anyway, thanks to all that chimed in and to Dabarbr, if your game goes up another notch and you have to give John Henderson more weight, don't blame me. Tell JH I said hello. :D

I do believe that it is possible that some people will play better with the OB 2 shaft and although it goes against logic, I will be playing with it at the GEM City Classic but don't let my low level of play dissuade you from trying it.

It is kind of funny that some people get over the unique look, sound and feel of the OB shafts and others do not.

I have altered how I perceive the OB cues and simply say:
It has a unique striped ferrule that looks like the stripes on a tiger, "which matches the eye of the tiger within me":p

The shaft does not make a lot of noise so it allows me to concentrate on the things I need to do so that I can execute better.

This shaft allows ME to hit the cue ball with authority and finesse but with increased accuracy.

Anyway, it was a fun thread and I'm glad that I wasn't the only person who perceived something unique about this shaft. It is kind of embarassing that so many others have been using it for a while.

I hope you enjoyed the report from the field. I plan to have some fun at the GEM City Classic at Johnny Archer and Kim Davenport's Pool Room in MArietta, GA and hope to see some of you there. Those that can't make it can check out www.cuesportsvideo.com who will be live streaming the event. Just don't watch me play with my new OB 2. It wouldn't be fair to OB cues. LOL

Thank You Joey!

AZB would be the better for it if we had many more threads like this one!

Your OB-2 shaft is being shipped to you with Irish Linen grip? Are you Mini-Me per chance? :D

(Just kidding, of course.)

I love my OB-2 and will never go back. I like the smaller taper. I don't know if it's me but it also seems to hit a little harder than my production Schon shafts.

I picked up an OB-1 shaft at the US Open last year after testing it. It took me a few hours to really get used to the difference (moved from a solid maple shaft) but it really allowed my english to flourish. I was just able to "see" how it should work when applying outside english at different speeds and lengths which I couldnt do before.

I am waiting until I go to the Open again this year to try out the OB-2. When I was there, the guy from OB (sorry-cant remember your name) let me go hit a few with it on the small table in the lobby. I am hoping to leave my OB-1 as collateral this year and see how the OB2 hits.

My game has progressed nicely in the last 6 months. I can now utilize english (funny how you have to get worse in that regard before you get better), and have fine tuned my stroke. I really want to try the smaller shaft. Even if all else was the same, the smaller shaft will make me stay focused on my hit.
