Has Pool/Billiards cost you a divorce?

Just about every hard-core pool player I've known has lost girlfriends, shack-ups, and wives. Very few are lucky enough to have had a wife like mine. For 35 years I was out playing pool almost every night of the week. Now I try to make that up in some small way by staying home, waiting on her hand and foot, doing all the cooking and housework (inside), and taking her out to dinner and a show as often as she likes. I know I had the better part of this marrige for 35 years and I'm trying to tilt it the other way now. If I live another 5 years I'll probably make up 1/10th of it. How and why this woman ever stayed with me this long is hard to imagine. She is a knockout, has a degree in nursing, good personality, and super smart. What the hell she ever saw in me I don't know. Isn't it just grand to have a wife like that? I've been married 33 years and raised 4 kids, but I don't know many people except my wife who could have put up with me that long. I wasn't out playing pool every night, but I presented her with other "challenges". We're two lucky guys.

My wife is really about to walk out! I play in a league but told her i am not playing in one next season. I play league Monday and Wednsday. I also support my local 9 ball and 8 ball tourneys, they are on Thursday and Friday. I told her i would sacrifice the Thursday due to very little 9 ball players. I have my own pool table at the house that i use everyday and i play my money games on Saturdays and Sundays. I also do all the tip and ferrule repairs where i live. I know i spend alot of time dealing with pool/billiards and hold a 40hr work week for Lockheed. Has anyone been in my shoes. I really love my wife but i really love pool also. She doesnt like pool or watching me play or anything. 10 yrs ago she was right there at every tourney and every match. I just dont know what to do!

Get her to convert to Islam: Those guys don't have your problems. D:D:D

Same here; I think I have the sweetest wife in the world and have no idea why she put up with me, but she did and it has been 21 years now. So I guess there are at least 3 of us.

Honestly, many of the pool players I have known I thought there was something wrong with them sexually. Not that they where gay but they seemed to have problems with women. I am talking about a lot of them. They never go on dates or anything, just hang out with other men. Beyond making rude suggestive remarks to waitresses they have sexless lives from what I have observed. Many pool players are kind of weird. Think about it, how many do you know who are like that? Every night in the pool room with a bunch of men. Do you ever remember seeing any of them with a girl? Makes you wonder.

Please tell me you will not give up your wife to play pool. No one should be expected to be married to someone who is gone 4-6 nights a week with a hobby. Its not like pool is even your job. I love to play the game, but the day it gets in the way of my relationship with my wife or kids is the day I will give away my table. You would really have to be a selfish person to look at the scenario you layed out and think that it is ok to be gone that often when she asks for more of your time.

When you are older and look back on life, are you going to be happier saying, ya, I won a couple of those in house tournaments, or having lived a meaningful life with someone you love. If I had to be 70 with my pool table to talk to or my wife and kids, and I would gladly take the latter.

On one side of the coin I am very much on your side. She knew that you were very much grounded in the world of billiards before you got married. On the other side of the coin I have ask what is too much? Her point of view is most likely that you much more prefer to use all of your free time for billiards with or without her instead of any time with just her.

If that's true and you don't see things changing for the foreseeable decade then I say stay on the same path and everything will work itself out, but you may regret this very much in the future.

In my case. as soon as we met I told my wife that I wouldn't give up pool for her period.

Jaden

Yeah.. well just imagine it isnt your wife but your girlfriend AND she is 3 weeks late AND you are setting in the waiting room of the OBGYN.....

Pool would be gave up real quick :D

is that supposed to be a joke? now way! pregnant or not you don't give up pool for her. tell her you want full custody so you can raise your little pool player without her negative BS!

or you calculate how much table time child support is going to eat up and adjust accordingly.

" I wouldnt give up pool for her Period"

Personally, in my scenario, I would much rather have her period than 3 nights of league play :D

i had a friend something like what you're talking about. the difference is that he (vinney) took home a hooker 2-3 times a week. i think his real shortcoming was that he didn't want to waste time with all the emotional BS and skipped straight to the part of the relationship he cared about

Thankfully here in Germany they have places where you can go visit the ladies of the night.... which is way better than taking them home :D

My wife loves the game as much as I do. Don't have to twist her arm too hard to get her to come out with me. I consider myself very lucky because under normal circumstances, I'd choose pool over a relationship and I'd be very single.

i've been lucky so far. my girlfriend also shoots and plays on a few teams with me and even goes to a sturday night tourney with me every few weeks. lately however there have been rumblings. i play league 4 nights a week, shoot in at least one tournament a week and in the case of the apa league stuff, i shoot in all of their local singles events and usually have between one and four teams going in the divsion, qualifier and city cup tournaments. this, it appears, is coming to the end of my girl's rope. she's been asking me to start ducking out on this or that team on a given night, or skip a tournament. now i have to say, i don't know what to do. i have really started to find my game lately. i had some really good instruction, read some good books and i really feel things coming together. recently i've been breaking and running at least one rack every time i play (8 or 9 ball) and usually running a rack or two on someone's dry break or miss. i know that's not major for a lot of you but for me it represents a quantum leap in my game. and now she's not happy. i have been playing this much since before we met and she knew this is what i did, so i am not sure how to tell her gently - it aint gonna stop. no how - no way. i love her to death but i've invested a ton of time and cash to start building and honing these skills and i am not going to lay down now just when i am starting to get decent.
