BigDaddyInc....Asking a room owner for compensation, just for showing up to a tournament, is, indeed, asking for "something for nothing".

NCS qualifiers
Thanks Royce and Scott. I think you guys understand what we are trying to do. Holly does a 'jam up' job trying to get NCS qualifiers going.
The first event we did was the 8-ball. We had over 60 people qualified to play in the National Championship - which was won by Brandon Shuff. Close to $6,000 and an invite to the the US Open 10 Ball in May.
The CSI office spends a lot of money and time to try and get these events going. We are trying to establish a way for the local players to play in local events and win their way to a national title. And an entry into a pro event.
We can't force people to play in them. All we can do is make them available to the rooms and hopefully there will be sufficient players to have the event.
There is NO membership fees or anything. The rooms payt a small fee and we provide posters and ads. The real problem is getting the info to the players.
We believe this is a solid method to promote pool in the pool halls (All events are on 9' tables) - and to establish a method of determining who is a national champion. No one is invited. In time, we will see the 'big names' playing in these. Because as this grows, we will attract some kind of sponsorship and other methods of building up the prize and prestige.
Players need to understand that they might need to forego a couple of hundred dollar tournament win - and parlay it into entry into a national event that pays pretty good - and maybe get an invite into a pro event.
This is for the players. Please get the word out and help to support it. We will have events in 8-ball, 9-ball, 10-ball, and 14.l. One Pocket will be in the future.

So my time and money spent traveling to the tourny is nothing? And fyi im not asking anyone for anything. They should offer out of courtesy.
Well thats for the roomowner to decide. All i know is that if 2or3 players show up to a tourny i advertised and nothing went down i would do my best to make it right. Give them free pool and a meal at least. But that's just me and my opinion so with that and a $1.00 you can get a 5 piece nugget at wendy's.

Honestly Promoters, Bar, Room, Sports Bar owners can not predict how many may or may not come. All they can do is offer to hold a event, the rest is up to the players, IMHO.
Sadly many Tournaments are just not happening because MONEY IS VERY TIGHT in this RECESSION!......

If some nit asked me for something just for showing up to my pool room, I would laugh him right out of the building. As a matter of fact if someone was so arrogant or ignorant, I am not sure which, I might offer them something to stay away. Just my .02

You are not understanding what i am saying. If you advertise a tourny with 500 or 1000 added and even if only 4or5 players show up maybe drove a few hrs to support your event you would say "sorry folks but you might as well turn around and go home." You people have assumed since i started posting in this thread that im asking for a handout you are wrong no where did i say i would ask for show up pay! All i know is that if my business depended on players showing up then i would try to make it right with them because i want them to come back.
If you feel strongly about this, ever though about approaching a poolhall owner with your proposal? It doesn't have to be just yourself, you could get a few like minded people act together as a tournament sponsor to guarantee paying for free pool and meals if only the three people.
I wonder if preregistration has been tried and what are the results. If the event has to be canceled or re-scheduled, people who preregistered can be notified ahead of time.

So, the bar owner buys extra food, beer, etc... They bring in extra staff. I am not sure what the CSI fee is but they are into that also. I know the beer they can sell later. The food may or may not spoil. The money they paid to the staff and the CSI fee I am assuming they dont get back.
The room owner goes from being excited about the event to being a total bust and loosing money. In your opinion they then owe you something because you decided to show up.

They shouldn't have cancelled the tournament. Even if 3 or 4 people show up, it should still go down IMO.
If the tournament may be cancelled due to low turnout, that fact should be on the flyers. That way, you avoid all this.

thanks to everyone's support. Dialogue and communication regardless of the circumstances is always good. I have taken steps to make sure this type of situation will not happen, if possible again. Despite who did or did not communicate with one another in Florida and how or when, it is my responsibility to make it right for the future. The owner of New Wave Billiards still supports the NCS and is a thoughtful and genuine soul who loves this sport. Both his rooms has 31 9' tables. I promised him I will work more directly with him in the future.

Todd, would you feel the same if you were a room owner. How long do you think they would stay in business?
Cry me a river. What would you tell the players that came to support your event? Once again i never said i would be owed anything but i think it would be good business to make an attempt to make it right.
Good business is to try to promote our sport by having the tournaments. If I drove an event and it were cancelled I wouldnt feel I were owed anything. I would actually feel a little empathy for the room owner and see what I could do to help promote the next one.

Im not picking a side here, and I dont know if the room owner should have offered free pool or food, but, when the first CSI tourney flopped at our local room, the word got out that it wasnt worth the gamble of traveling to play in it. We had one guy from out of state make the trip, and he won the one pocket tourney. Im just saying it only takes people getting burned once to turn them off to the whole idea.
