Anyone had instruction from Nick Varner?

I'm considering this. If so, how did it go? Did you feel like you took some thing away from that really helped your game?

Nick gave me some lessons back in the late 90's and they were excellent. He found some very basic flaws in my game (stance, breaking style, bridge length, etc) that were easy to change and made a big difference. Plus, he is a great guy and very easy to be around. No huge ego poking out anywhere, no attitude of superiority at all. I give him an 'A'.

Nick gave me a lesson in '90. He spent an hour with me. Ultimately telling me, "well, you can already do everything I can: make the balls and move the cue ball where you want to, so what do you want me to tell you?" Thanks Nick!

LOL!

Some 17 years later, he gave me another quick lesson, about 30 seconds (Nick talks slow - LOL!), "if you wanna win more, don't miss." Thanks Nick!

Two of the most important lessons I ever learned!

I told him a few years back, that I finally understood the 1st lesson he taught me, some 15 years earlier. LOL! ;)

True stories...:grin-square:

Lets see..... Hall of Famer....10 time World Champion in multiple games....won U.S. Open back to back years...considered most knowledgeable amongst his peers....only American to beat Efren in the Philippines..........hmmmm....

GET THE LESSON

Excellent lesson. He wants to go over the specific things that YOU want to learn. I asked him for a clinic on banks for part of the lesson and loved it. I asked him what drills he used to move up from my level. Solid gold. He has 1/10 the ego of instructors that he is 10 times better than. He talked more about his days when he struggled than his achievements.

Play 9 ball with him and ask for a commentary of what's going on in his head. He would explain why he would go one route over another and I had revelations. Have him tell you what routes you should take when it's your turn to shoot.

I have his autograph in silver on my pool case and I'm very proud of it. Take a lesson from that man while you can. He's a living legend who can still play.

Yeah, at first I was thinking that was one of the dumbest questions that I've ever heard "Can I learn anything from Nick Varner?" but when I took a second to think about it it really does make sense. Just because someone is a great player doesn't necessarily make them a great teacher. I'm hoping that is what the original poster was wanting to know.

Luther Lassiter said he didn't give lessons because he didn't know what he was doing.

Judging from everything I know about Nick I would think a lesson with him would be great. The story alone would be worth the price.

Btw, where is Nick these days?

Nick has been going around with Johnny Archer and Mark Cantrill doing The Legends and Champions Tour. Giving lessons and answering questions.

I am sure someone who has taken the class/lesson can say what kind of a teacher he is. My guess is that he is really good at anything that has to do with pool. :)

Exactly what I was asking. I do know enough about pool to know about Nick Varner's accomplishments.

Just do it

I would consider myself very fortunate just to have the
opportunity to get a lesson from Mr. Varner.

Wow, Luxury! You must have worked with poor instructors. NONE of the top professional instructors that I know, have much (if any) ego, at all. FTR, I think anyone would benefit GREATLY from a lesson with Nick. Nice guy, supremely knowledgeable about pool, won almost everything there is to win in pool, and smart enough to be able to communicate concepts (he dun gradeated Kollege, ya know!:D j/k!). Amen, Nick can still play...and WIN against the best out there!

Consider yourself lucky if you get a private lesson from Nick Varner. I can't think of anyone more knowledgeable in the pool world today, and able to communicate it also. Getting a lesson from Nick or Buddy or Danny D. is like finding a little buried treasure. These guys have so much knowledge and experience it's mind boggling. It would take weeks for them to teach you a fraction of what they know about pool.

No question there are other excellent instructors, several of whom post on here. But the above three guys may not all be around to share their knowledge that much longer. Even the well qualified instructors know that guys like Nick, Buddy and Danny have a wealth of experience gained over the years that is awesome. It's like going to a bottomless well, that always has more water.

I'll be happy to take this for ya Lux....

Sorry Lux but I broke my slap ya key last night they told me if I waited a week they could get me a upgrade to the 2 times key...

Mowem down...Huh? Excuse me? Want to explain what you mean by that? Oh...and btw, it's "you're an idiot"! :D At least I can spell! I suspect your stunted innuendo was pointed at me? DeNiro impression: "You talkin' ta ME? You MUST be talkin' ta me...'cause there's nobody else here!" Just so you know, I was referring to instuctors like, for example, Joe Tucker, Randyg, Blackjack, L'il Joe, Mark Wilson, Stan Shuffett, and a few others (some would even include ME on that exclusive list)! IMO, those folks have no ego, when it comes to teaching pool!

Holly cow I almost forgot about Nick.....

There isnt 1 lesson out there that is going to make you a champ. That aside Ive not only had many a coach in many a game Ive had a few lessons in teh game of pocket billiards (because I suck) and one was with Mr. Nick Varner. The only way you could go wrong taking a lesson from him is if you are not a good student....Have some real ?'s ready, play some racks befor you go and make a list of things that come up and use those to get the ball rolling...He is a really neat guy. I would love to be able to spend like a month with him if that didnt make a BIG dif. I'd quit because there would be know doubt I didnt have it....

My only warnning, dont roll out to a bank combo into the side pocket because he will run out from there...trust me...

Very true statement

Who were the others with?

The only way you could go wrong taking a lesson from him is if you are not a good student....

That can be said about almost any good instructor.

Have some real ?'s ready, play some racks befor you go and make a list of things that come up and use those to get the ball rolling...

Luxurys personal experiances are none of your bis. he was making a simple comment about Nick's nature that didnt need any B.S. comment from you, Im sure the OP got his point and was happy to know he felt that way about him...

And it was bad grammer not bad spelling I spelled the words right, used the wrong ones thanks for pointing that out I'll be sure to file it correctly. Thats the toilet you hear in the back ground...

Just exactly why do I need to list all the people I have had lessons from.

Mowem down...Actually, NO, you spelled "you're" wrong. You spelled it "your"...no 'e' on the end! As for Luxury...most good instructors are not about ego. They're about providing quality instruction. That's why I made the comment I did. It was not derogatorily directed at him, at all!

About the rest of your 'response'...I guess somebody needs a nap!

To put the thread back on track...Take lessons from Nick Varner, if you can!
