The pin on this Gulyassy looks close to my 3/8x10 but the threads are thicker. Can anyone tell me what kind of pin this is?

Will another 3/8 10 shaft screw on it.

no, my 3/8x10 shaft will not work on this cue, but the shaft from this cue will fit on my 3/8x10 joint pin, which makes me think these threads are thicker, the pin is slightly shorter, but the twists seem the same.

It sounds like the pictured pin is a modified 3/8-10 (flat bottom) pin. The outside diameter is 3/8", like on the old-style 3/8-10 pins, but the minor diameter (at the base of the threads) is larger than on the old pins.

The result is that a shaft tapped for the new-style pin will fit on the old-style pin, but a shaft tapped for the old-style pin won't fit on the new-style pin. However, a cue maker can easily enlarge the hole on the old-style shaft a bit so it will work on both pins.

MAK pin

There was a time when Tim Scruggs used this pin on some cues. I believe he told me it was called a MAK pin. It's threads are square, and would create a very tight fitting joint. The problem was that when other 3/8 10 shafts are used with it you could ruin the cut threads in that shaft.

It is hard to really tell from your pics, but I am fairly sure that is what you have. I also have seen some of Mike G.'s cues with this same pin.

pin

ACME threads. Count the number of turns in an inch and measure the outside diameter for size.

I was going to buy joint protectors for my Sledgehammer- maker asked what cue it was for and then told me his 3/8x10 would not fit.

Give Mike a call, he is there for you!

If that's a Mike g cue it could be a old 3/8-10 pin.
post a picture of the whole cue..

That is an Acme thread 3/8x10 pin.

A few cue makers have used this pin over the years. Most of the taps available for this thread are what they call a tandem tap. The first part of the tap cuts a partial or preliminary thread, and the second part cuts the finished acme threads. The problem with this is that you need a really deep hole to use this style of tap.

I am sure that Mike has a special make tap, or a set of taps just for this.

I think I read that you were looking for Joint protectors for this. If so, then just call Mike Gullyassy. He can make a set for you.
