Wanna be perfectionist gear ho's!

Does this sound like anyone you know? Hmmmmmmmmm........

I can only play pool on a Gold Crown V or a Diamond Pro Am with Simonis 860 HR and ultra tight pockets. The table must be perfectly leveled to within .000000001 of an inch. The balls must be the latest and greatest (tournament balls) from Saluc (Aramith), less I fall victim to the dreaded "skid". My cue must be a custom made low squirt design by whoever is getting the most money for their cues, it must have a kryptonite radial joint, and it must be tipped with one of those new laminated elephant foreskin, rhino scrotum, eagle skin, wild boar hide, piglet hide, and human baby foreskin tips. I can only use Blue Diamond chalk, or in a pinch..blue pre flag Masters. The room must be kept at a constant 50% humidity level at a temperature of 72 degrees (plus or minus .05 degrees). I demand absolute silence during all matches. Oh and I cannot play unless I have my special pool playing shoes on, which align my spine to maximize my stroke action. And soon, I plan to move up from being a C player to a B- and then those knucklehead players who regularly trounce my tired a** with their cheap inferior cues on dirty tables with less than stellar cloth and old worn out balls will have to bow to me!

Feel free to add more to the list of must haves!

I know what direction your post was going, but here is the deal. Doesnt most of what you posted make the game more fun? Or the opposite make the game not so fun?

Balls that roll off, racks that are tight, comfortable playing conditions? In the US are there not things that you expect? If the pool room cannot provide little things like this there is room for competition.

There is nothing wrong with expecting a $4,000 table to be level. There is nothing wrong with having matching set of balls that rack right. There is nothing wrong to expect that the room temp is comfortable. Same with the juke box not blaring before 7 pm.

As far as the other stuff, let them spend their money how they want, it is for their enjoyment not yours

Lighten up there pardner, I happen to agree with everything you stated above. I'm just having a little fun with the extremely anal, obsessive compulsive gear freaks. Anything taken to extremes has its downside.

How many times do you go to a pool hall and find absolutely perfect conditions? The cloth might not be perfect, the rails may play long or short, the music may not be to your liking etc.. The winners are the guys who learn to adapt and overcome, not the ones who obsess over every little thing.

I know some guys who shoot lights out and they don't even own a cue! They use a house cue, whatever chalk is available, and they could care less if the table is clean or dirty or what type of cloth is used on it. They just run out.

if you know then why go off on the tangent???

A)He's talking about nitty wanna be's that instead of focusing on the problems they create in the game...they focus it on the equipment...the cue, chalk, shoes, lights, cloth, balls, music BLA BLA BLA, we all know the story is always someone elses fault other than THEIR OWN (YOU HAVE TO TAKE CONTROL OF YOUR LIFE)

B) Those are not David Lee Roth pants...those baggy....those are Hammer pants......so can't touch this!

C) Any self actualized good player, who makes it a point to learn and be a student of the game can run out on anything...its like a golfer *****ing that the green aint flat. If the table rolls off, or banks off then you ADJUST like any sane person would do. You don't shoot the same on every table because every table is diff, due to construction, weather etc...

D) I don't even know what the stroke align shoes are...I don't wear shoes when I play.... so's I can put the sneak attack on you...POW shot full of bullet holes on a carpeted table with a lean like my rooster.

E) If you don't like the table...then do what Eddie Felson said...go play cribbage or something. Now me, I would shoot pool with a bunch of oranges in my driveway if thats all I had. (before I got my table done me an my buddy would mess around and play a game we called caroms-mini-putt-putt on the carpet with the pool balls LMAO)

Poof,
Grey Ghost has left the building

Or you could try to match all of Efren's fine equipment:

- a playing cue with one shaft that has more blue chalk embedded in it than you'd find in a house cue. One shaft, and he's traveling halfway around the world. Also, a break cue with one shaft.

- a couple of raggedy pieces of sandpaper to smooth the shaft and shape the tip (eek!)

- a container of Johnson's baby powder for his hands (gasp!)

- one piece of chalk worn down to almost the bottom millimeter (shudder!)

- a beautiful justis case that he slaps a "fragile" sticker on and sends through regular baggage at the airport (the horror, the horror!)

And no jump cue! Here's the link:

a survival kit that even McGuyver would be proud of, its like trying to tell people how to clean their shaft, instead of a damp paper towel buff and then buff again w a dry one...its perfect, they ruin it and go buy any kind of black magic they can get thier hands on...thinking that the more money they spend the better they gonna play...they might look good but they shoot shoddy

These have come up in a friendly game on a Friday night, no money involved:

"Are these tables regulation height?"
"Are these rails too high/too low?"
"I can't play without my cue, it will mess up my stroke"
"It is too dark/light in here"
"What kind of balls are these, they don't play right"

anyone ever see people bring their own set of balls to the pool hall...that is, well thats so f'n weird I don't even have a comment on it

I like beat up, un-level tables with dead rails holes in the cloth, cigarette burns, beer stains, chipped cue balls, plastic racks. red cloth, crooked dinged up bar cues with slip over tips while listening to heavy metal and drinking pbr. Its pool at its best.

The skintight glove! you can't leave that out. Shows off every muscle in their powerful covered fingers :)

grey ghost your right... because golf greens are supposed to level, just like pool table. Wow, you compared something that is supposed to be level with something that is made to be undulating. ( Ill give you a min to look that word up)........... I'm definitely not obsessed with equipment, but I do appreciate a table that is taken care of and maintained. Guess that crazy.

Kryptonite joint? No way! I shoot like Superman and a kryptonite joint would just weaken me!!!

As far as bringing your own balls to the pool hall ... who did it?

Yeah ..... Mosconi.

But we all know he sucked, right? Hehe, JK, equipment now is so much better all around that I only lament the conditions in the WORST of places with old, worn out, pitted balls ... and it's not exactly tough to beat the competition in those places, heh.

Why wouldnt anyone want to play in good conditions with the best equipment? Nothing feels better than playing on a table thats been set up to play right.

I'm thinking.....

A lifetime supply of those pants?:shocked2:...hopefully means ONE PAIR. Wear em one time to the BARBER SHOP on a busy Saturday morning-not the hair salon for men--but the Barber shop with the Barber pole outside the building... and after listening to all the supportive comments-you may not wear them in public again...so yeah, that one pair could last a lifetime.

I don't want pristine table, equipment and room conditions-that would eliminate most of my standard excuses for playing bad.

This is a good thread. We need more of this kind of stuff. We have gotten too serious around here. IMHO

Take care, guys.

fixed that for ya !

I agree with all these, and I also like to have a pretty girl massage my feet between shots.

You forgot to mention "pool pants", which allow you the freedom to settle into your stance easily...For me, they're usually a bit larger in the buttocks...

it's OK , Troops , I fixed that typo for ya !

The pool hall must also have an oxygen bar, aromatherapy, a very subtle sound of a babbling brook playing and everything in the hall must be arranged in a feng shui layout so my chi is not disrupted as play cribbage or 14.1. The moment I pull 6 balls off the table the babbling brook must change to the mating calls of the majestic blue whale for my 9 ball practice.

In all seriousness I only need level 9 footers, rails that aren't loose and cloth that's cleaned at least once a week. I kept going to the last hall I frequented until every table in the place had dead rails. What I mean by dead I mean the rail rubbers had actually come loose in spots on every table in the place.

All my other preferences are just bonuses for me and certainly wouldn't keep me from going to one hall over another, or have me ever complain about the conditions.

My favorites are the guys that carry 5x7 or larger cases, and will use every cue in them trying to find a stroke they never had all while swearing that they never play this bad when the last time they were on a table was 6 months ago or more.
