I am reading Hustler Days by R.A. Dyer. From the impression I get pool had it's heyday from the 1850's thru the 1930's. Then WW II came and the returning soldiers returned with money to spare and followed the American Dream of a house, wife, 3.2 kids, and a dog, Then forsakening the sport of Billiards. Which led to the decline of the pool halls throughout the country, until The Hustler came out.
Which got me thinking how many of you are married, and how many are single?
What is the time spent in the pool hall for a married man or woman, per week, Compared to a single person per week...Just curious, I'm married and spend approx. 15 hrs a week in the poolhall........Charlie D

I'm single, have a pool table at home, and don't spend any time at any pool halls unless a tournament is going on.

I've been happily married for almost 35 years. Married young, I'm only 47. My wife as she hates to be called has been happily married for 3 or 4 months give or take a month or two.
I've been spending 30 - 40 hours a week playing and practicing. On top of that I fish The Great Lakes as often as I can. This winter I'm playing in three leagues and practicing 3 or 4 days.
Before you ladies jump on me, no matter how I say it it sounds wrong, it's the way she want's it. If I'm happy so is she and vise versa.
The first 30 years we did everything together. She can't keep up anymore because of her M.S. Now we spend every waking minute together when we're both home. I don't sleep much while she needs to sleep a lot.

I'm lucky enough to have a pool playing APA captain for a wife and teamate of 29 years so I get about 30 hours a week of poolroom time. --Leonard

I'm married except for league I basically play all my pool at home on my table, but then again I'm an unsocial SOB anyway.
If you're really interested in the subject read the original read the original sociological presentation of that theory... Hustlers, Beats, and Others.

I am married and spend 0.0 hrs a week in a poolhall.

I think this is a pretty typical response from many of the married pool players...maybe less if you have children. ;) (Like me)

I consider myself lucky if I get in 8 hours a week...But, I think I enjoy every minute of playing time more than I did than when I was single, and didn't have a care in the world.

Lacking adequate playing time, when I really want to play, has made my game better than it was when I could just jump up and head to the pool room anytime.

Now, I enjoy every single opportunity to strike a pool ball, and my focus is better than it's ever been.

Quality over quantity....or at least that's what I keep telling myself. :D

I've been married for 9 years now. My wife is the one who suggested I get a pool table about 6 years ago, since I had enjoyed knocking the balls around a little in my youth. That suggestion of hers created my obsession and I now play in two straight pool leagues for about 8-10 hours a week and then I practice at home about 8 hours or so a week.

I am slowly improving and think it is something I can keep doing, health permitting, the rest of my life.

I'm with you poolnut. I have been with my girlfriend for almost 6 years, and if a day goes by without her talking about a ring its a good day.

Having a pool table in my basement I almost never make it to the poolhall. All day at work while browsing AZ I think about going to the poolhall which is about 10 min away from home. Then I get home and just play/practice at home. Paying table time and just being lazy might be the biggest reasons I never make it.

I guess that I'm lucky that my girl likes to play pool. (by play pool I mean 1or 2 hours a week.....I'm more of the 30 to 40 hours a week guy) After typing that I'm wondering why I still suck:eek:

I like the quote....

"the bangers consider me a pro, and the pros consider me a banger"

As for the marriage thing.....I'm holdin on to single life as long as possible:thud:

Maybe she's trying to tell you something? 6 years is a loooong time without a ring...My wife and I are coming up on 6 years, and it's STILL been a long time...;)

If you aren't careful, you might find out more about the much heralded "single life" then you ever wanted to know....imo.

Yeah I think your right 420:eek: Well I'm gonna be turning 30 in January and we're goin to Vegas. Bout time I settle down and listen to Beyonce.
I need to find a sweet spot in vegas to pop the question.

I am not married or single. I live with my girl, and we are getting married next year, so I think I am more married than single. We have a Gold crown IV with the matching light in our livingroom, and the boys come by and play/gamble/drink on Fridays for 4 or 5 hours. I go to the poolroom for a couple of hours on Wednesday. Before my girl moved in I would spend about 6 hours at the poolroom a week. I told her before she moved into my house that two things must stay; the Gold Crown, and the draft Budweiser. Everything else is negotiable. I used to go through two kegs of Budweiser a month, now I am down to just one. I still play everyday, and that's what is important. One of my buddies wives asked Renee the other day when the pool table is going out in the garage. She said: "I'll be out in the garage before that table will" That's why she's a keeper!

I am married and have a table at home. If I am not looking at TV, cutting the grass or other stuff that needs to be done around the house, you know helping the kids with homework, playing with the dog I am on the pool table. Friday nights I play tournament. My family knows where I am at (in ther garage) so I am not a hard find if needed for anything. The wife does not mind because I could be doing worst things. I may stop by the poolroom on the way home for an hour or 2 during the week when ever the mood hits me just to unwind and sweat the action and it seems reasonable to me.

Married with 3 Kids

I have been married for 8 years come October. My pool playing dropped significantly once married and even more with the first child. My children are currently 7, 6 and 3 and things are finally getting a little better.

I never really took pool too seriously in my youth, just something to do while drinking beer on weekends at the bar. This turned into betting beer and ultimately not being able to play sober.

Once married, I was reduced to 1 day a week with buddies in the pool hall for 3 to 5 hours. As my friends became parents that dropped off too. Now that my children are little older and more self sufficient I have recently started playing in a couple of leagues, although none concurently.

I spend 3 hours playing league, 2 to 3 hours post-league and occasionally an additional night during the week for 4 to 5 hours. I have only attempted one tournament since my reguvinated appreciation for the game and am anxious to participate in more...

head hurts

I don't understand option 3 on the poll: "She's married." I'm even tired of trying to figure it out myself.

We've been "living in sin" for 6 years next month, so... I voted married. We both play about 10-15 hours per week, at home and at poolrooms.

You need one more option.. Divorced thats me after spending about 20 hours per week in the poolroom. Now I have a much nicer girl who lets me go and play as much as I like. The only problem now is the closest 9' table is about 45 minutes away:mad:

i.m single an just in 3 pool league nites i play 15hours in them 3 nites maybe more then no telling how many hours i play on reguler nites lol
