Louie Roberts Titles?

He didn't win it twice, that I'm sure of. I don't know about his other titles but I'll bet he won them around the same time that he won the 1979 U.S. Open because from what I've heard he had an audio tape that he was listening to at night which had a positive self-help feel to it which apparently gave him tons of confidence. It was said he was virtually unbeatable around that time and that was when he won the U.S. Open.
I know he won a big tournament in Chicago either in 1990-1991 !

I can't remember Louie winning any other big tourney. He did get to fourth in the second big Caesars Tahoe event in 1982. He made it to the TV rounds and played Hawaiian Brian as I recall. Naturally he stayed up the night before drinking and gambling. This is when he uttered his famous line on TV, looking right into the camera, "Hi Mom, don't worry I'll be home to cut the grass as soon as I'm done." Louie was just as unique as Keith.

I met Louie Roberts around Christmas time in Rockford Ill. In 1977 or there abouts. I forget the name of the place, Dallas West was playing still, George Brunt,played pool and billiards, Big Willie Munson. I watched Varner,Sigel and Rempy playing 40.$ ten ball. There Women exchanged the money. Bob Mucc was selling cues for 500. Turquoise and silver in the butt. Him and Jim McDermott were friends/partners. The place had upstairs and downstairs.Louie was more of a hustler then. Keith was much of the same. I remember long hair and Mustaches - and the bumper stickers ass or grass nobody rides for free.mark

I am pretty sure that Louie made it to the finals and may have won the big annual Father's Day tournament at The Jointed Cue in Sacramento around 1982.

I understand your interest in Louie because you now have his Cue. I have send you a PM in the past with what little I know about Louie that I didn't want to say in public. But I forgot I talked with a guy from St Louis about 3 years ago who claimed to have very fancy Mucci Cue That Louie won at some tournament. Of course I have seen many sell those cues with a signature etc as part of there winnings. But I can't remember which tournament he said it came from.
I first saw Louie in 1979 at a Hustlers tournament at Greenway in Baton Rouge La. I want to believe Louie dumped in that tournament for the green room action. I am saying the same thing as Hollywood, Louie was a hustler and big time Gambler. I have seen Louie flip a coin for the entire winning of a very long session more than once. I was not living in Baton Rouge at the time only visiting my sister. But I moved to B R in 1981 and Louie was still making the rounds there and N.O. where I watched him play many times. IMHO Louie didn't want to win tournaments only gamble.

IMHO Louie was from the old school of road players and hustlers of easy come easy go and did what ever they had to, to make it. ESPN had not started Televising Professional Pool in Louie's day. Many of these Hustlers tried to stay on the Down Low. I think Paul Newman captured the pool scene of those days very well in the movie the "HUSTLER". Greenway in BR La. and Sportsmans in NO, La. were in fact big money halls. When name road player came to those places they played big money more on the up & up. But in between those events they were on the road trying to steal games in small out of the way places.
I am not saying Hustlers don't travel today. But today there are more tournaments that pay. I have never been a world class player but I no longer gamble because I can make lunch money playing local tournaments against lesser players. But there have been times in all our lives where we have hustled to either supplement our income or actually live off pool.
PS Just last night I played in a tournament and didn't have my head into it. As a result I lost. But I had just as much fun watching the guy that beat me jump up and down with Excitement. At my age pool is more a social event than a competition now. I play the same group of people most of the time in my small town. There are leagues or tournaments 7 nights a week. Back in Louie's day that was unheard of.

But in Greenway pool hall was an old road player named Danny who worked for "BIG" as a used car salesman, buy here pay here. Danny ended up dealing blackjack on a river boat and died of a heart attack while dealing. I always knew Danny was a world class player, But I never realized how big a name he was until I googled him. Maybe his broken neck from a car accident threw me off on his road name. ""Handsome Danny Jones."" BTW I still have a sneaky pete I got from Danny so maybe we have more in common than just AZ not saying my sneaky Pete is worth any where near your cue.

You find much on Louie if you google him cause the internet was not around when he was playing.
