DCC 14.1 Challenge for 2010

I plan to do the Derby City Classic 14.1 Challenge again in 2010. It will follow the same schedule as in previous years with the prelims on Sunday-Wednesday and the finals on Thursday and Friday. I'm not sure yet whether the finals will be on the TV table.

I have a request in for a larger area, but the Horseshoe doesn't have much extra space.

I hope to see many of you there -- especially all the people who have helped out in the past and made the event possible.

This is absolutely one of my favoritest things about the DCC (and I know, that of many others, Bob.) You are doing an amazing thing for pool and I'm more than happy to donate my $100.

Any rule changes, or will it be the same drill?

I'm with you, Lou. i figured if he didn't have it, I might not go. Now looks like I need to start planning.
 
First thing I want to say is thanks Bob, I really appreciate what you do for the game. I see straight pool being played these days and I think you are a big part of that.

As for me, I will be doing my part with the video again if needed.

I plan to participate in the challenge myself.

The way it went last year -- and I admit, I was not there through the bitter end -- it seems to me that you might be better off with just one table in the room, traded off for more/better spectator seating. The second table seemed to go unused for extended periods of time and onlookers were always squeezed in to see what was going on on the "real" table.

The only other suggestion I would make is to not allow any banking fools with felt pens, into the room under any circumstances :-)

Thanks for promoting 14.1 Bob, it was very classy to have scorekeepers/refs it keeps the players in line and also helps any possible knowledgable fans from feeling alienated. I felt blessed to be in the winners circle towards the ending, I am sorry that Mr. Figuruer=0 feels the endind was bitter. I prefered your first post in lou of your second. When there are refs it makes everyone feel more comfortable fans and players alike. I will be attending this years event and will do my part to play the game well and conduct myself in a mannerly way.

Kudo's to Bob Jewett for bringing back this great event. It is always the high point of my Derby City week.

I would like to challenge dmgwalsh and elvicash to commit to participating in the event. If they will, I propose that the 3 of us have a Booby Prize contest (since I'm thinking my chances at the actual top prize may not be completely realistic at this point). We each chip in $20, and whichever of us has the high run in our official attempts wins the $60. I make Dennis the slight favorite, but it should be close - we also will be doing our part to help Bob out a little.

That sounds good, I'm in for $20 more. Also I will throw either of you an extra $20 if you run 43 or higher my current goal. I hope to have ran my 43 by then.

Danny, "...until the bitter end" is just a saying. It does not mean, literally, that the end was bitter. Just perhaps that the whole event took a while to complete.

I was somewhat disappointed that the 14.1 finals were delayed until after the nine ball finals on Saturday night, but the schedule on the TV table and the schedules for the players made us run late. I hope that we can finish the 14.1 by Friday night -- we might have more spectators.

If anyone who is not going to be there would like to donate to the prize fund, I already have one pledge and additions are certainly welcome. For those of you who can be there, just enter.

As for going down to one table, that's certainly a possibility. The rack end would want to be at the door end of the room so the spectators would be closer to the action, I suppose. If we had a huge rush at the end, we could annex a table or two in another room.

hmmmm, I dan't know.

The problem with the rack end at the doorway is that a lot of people are always popping their heads in and out of the doorway, checking out what is going on in that particular room. That would be seriously bad for the shooter. I'm not sure, logistically, what the better answer is...

The way I have been shooting lately, I'm the slight favorite to get the Spencer award this year. I think he averaged about 3 balls per attempt. Or maybe I will do what I did in practice:

One of my greatest pool achievements (??only pool achievements??) was beating Ralf Souquet at the first DCC 14.1 event. He got up to the table and ran 1, 1, 0, 8, and 13. I then got up and ran a 14 or 15 - exact number doesn't matter, but it was better than that guy Ralf who can hardly play.

I'm thinking if you and Dana and I have a "mini-event" it could be even more fun.

P.S. - Please do not tell anyone that Souquet had already run a 150-something the day before I trounced him.

Im pretty sure Ralf scratched one time while missing for a -1. At any rate, those stats belie the notion that there isnt much luck in Straight Pool.

Yes, yes I see what you are saying...Ralf was awfully lucky to get all the way up to 13 that last rack; the magnitude of my victory should have been much greater.

OK Lou, just did not like the way you coined the phrase "..until the bitter end" - it did seem a little negative for sure. I am a little sensitive which helps me in my pool game but not in the broad spectrum of the Wordly people - no hard feelings. As for ways to improve on the 2010 event for Bob, maybe if it were not so cost effective we could have a big screen (ie live feed) outside the door where people could watch the match live. Only allow certain # of players in the playing arena for scorekeeping purposes. I am making this sound easier than it probably is - however there is a way to keep people from peeking there heads in and out that would be relatively inexpensive, I thought that was well orchestrated last year and there was someone on hand to keep the rif raf away from the two tables that they had.

I do not have a marketing degree but I do know that presentation is an essential part of the product your trying to sell and or promote, as for speeding up the game and amount of tables and such I do not have any groundbreaking ideas on that either except maybe raising the entry fees. I would still compete.

Yes he is. Never causes trouble and seems to always be helping out somewhere.
