In 14.1 is there a 50 point penalty for a rule infraction? I know there is a
1,2, and 15,but I think there is a 50 for a intentional foul of some sort.
Thanks in advance for all replies.

Not that I ever heard of in over 40 years of playing. Did someone try to pull this on you?

Not in the 50 years I've been playing. Most likely someone heard fifty when someone said fifteen.

There was, very briefly, a rule that said if you pick up the cue ball it is a 15 point foul and you must rack all the balls and execute a break shot but that was very quickly abandoned.

No penalty of 50 points. However, for unsportsmanlike conduct, it can get even worse than that -- all the way up to ejection from the competition! Here's the rule:

6.16 Unsportsmanlike Conduct
The normal penalty for unsportsmanlike conduct is the same as for a serious foul, but the referee may impose a penalty depending on his judgment of the conduct. Among other penalties possible are a warning; a standard-foul penalty, which will count as part of a three-foul sequence if applicable; a serious-foul penalty; loss of a rack, set or match; ejection from the competition possibly with forfeiture of all prizes, trophies and standings points.
Unsportsmanlike conduct is any intentional behavior that brings disrepute to the sport or which disrupts or changes the game to the extent that it cannot be played fairly. It includes
(a) distracting the opponent;
(b) changing the position of the balls in play other than by a shot;
(c) playing a shot by intentionally miscuing;
(d) continuing to play after a foul has been called or play has been suspended;
(e) practicing during a match;
(f) marking the table;
(g) delay of the game; and
(h) using equipment inappropriately.

At one time around the 1980s, the penalty in the BCA rule book for 3 in a row was 20% of the length of the game. I think this was a misguided attempt to curb the use (by players like Lassiter), of the use of three fouls to get the upper hand in safety play. 15 points is not a lot if the alternative is letting your opponent run 50 (assuming you are playing someone who runs 50 routinely).

If the game were to 150, three fouls would be 30 under that rule. I suppose 250 would result in 50, but I don't recall any match played to 250.

The 1988 rule book had the 20% rule.

I know it was a 30 point foul (instead of the usual 15) when Efren Reyes tapped the cue ball with his ferrule against Dallas West. Don't remember off hand what tournament that was. One of the US Opens I think. That rule was peculiar to that tournament.

That may have been a referee call for unsportmenlike conduct. I am not sure how they arrived at 30 either, but thats my guess.

I just rewatched that section of the Reyes v West match. It was only a 15 point penality. One commentator states "It was a 15 point foul when I started playing 30 years ago."

No this came up between myself and a friend after 3 consecutive fouls.I
actually believe i read somewhere of a 50 point foul in regards to a player
continuing to intentionally foul rather break the balls.
thanks for the posts.
