Ivory substitute

I have a cue with an alternative ivory butt cap. Very pretty, nice grain but I think it would probably be quite brittle. I don't know for sure, I just have this feeling that I don't want to accidentally bang it against anything.

I did..

I bought the big bar....
to make Palques and stuff.
Thin pieces, like 1/8" thick, will bend..flex..
That's all I know..
Don't know how it is for preformance stuff...

how does it look in person does it look like ivory or can you tell its a fake right off the bat?

I bought some to make butt caps and joints out of but while turning it round I quickly changed my mind. It's way to brittle to be on either end of cue where one end of it would be unprotected from bumps. Probably fine for inlays.

I'll second that - I've used a few 1/4-ish inch discs for Hoppe rings,
and they are fine - but I wouldn't use it for anything any closer to the tip than that. As Dick more or less said, I wouldn't trust it for a butt cap
either - it was sorta soft and crumbly when turned.

It is nice and white tho - and if you prefer bleached, refrigerator white,
ivory, instead of the mellow yellow that ivory really looks like, the color
is ok too.

I've purchased that specific material and was disappointed with it. I agree the only use is for Hoppe type rings and I am reluctant to use it again for that purpose. It tends to pit and tear out when machined. Aegis II or Grice is much better choice, IMO.
