Breaking 9-ball and 10-ball

For the last three months now I've been working on different kinds of breaks in 9-ball and 10-ball. After 1000's of breaks for each game I've come to the conclusion that about a ¼ speed break in 9-ball makes you a wing ball a good % of the time and you have a shot at the 1-ball if it doesn't go in the side. Power breaking in 9-ball is not necessary or even the best choice IMO. You can also rig the rack so the 9-ball goes in the bottom corner or close to the pocket for a combo or carom later in the run. I'm not saying to cheat…I'm just saying.

In 10-ball I found breaking a little better than ¾ speed will get the 2 and 3-ball (corner balls) going 4 rails and back at the foot corners and the 1-ball either goes in the side or back by the corner foot pocket for a shot. To get the 2 and 3-ball not to collide with each other most of the time you have to rig the rack so one corner ball leaves the rack a fraction of a second before the other corner ball. Johnnyt

Johnny. Congrats on your deligence. I don't have the patience to break 1,000 time, either. thanks for the info.

Ya: What about 8-ball ???

I just noticed: under your name it references "Bar Box". Are you taking about breaking on Bar Box or on a 9-fotter ???

There are a lot of tricky things that you can do with racking. The rack is more MUCH more important than the actual break. It is the most ridiculous notion to rack for your opponent. I want to puke every time I see the nine ball just squirt out of the rack directly at the bottom corner. I literally feel like I am at a disadvantage when I rack for my opponent because I have become so good at racking. I might just have to start to use my powers for evil.

As far as 8 ball I just try and find a frozen track of balls to make sure that the energy gets dispersed into most of the rack. On a barbox if you hit the second ball go and look to make sure that ball is frozen to the 8 and the 8 is touching the balls below it. Same on a big table but I prefer to break hitting the head ball on a big table.

Probably 90% of the breaking was done on my BB but I wanted to see if it was about the same for 9-ball on a 9' table so went to the poolroom 4 times for a little over an hour each time. I just needed to hit a hair harder and move the QB a few inches more toward the long rail and I got about the same results.

As far as 8-ball I figured out years ago that you need the rack tight and hit the 1-ball square. If the rack is tight the balls should spread well. Of course park the QB in middle of table.

I don't like beaking for the 2nd ball in 8-ball. There is too much of a chance to scratch or go off the table if your a little off on your aim. On a BB it's 10 times worse because the rails are so much closer to the rack. Johnnyt

If you are scratching or launching the CB, its because you need to follow your own 9B advice and break it with...less speed.

I only break about 40-50% and never go off the table and rarely scratch (FAR less than with a traditional break anyway). I think "smooth, medium, draw" on the 2nd ball break. Harder = balls all collect on the side rail nearest to you and softer = bad clusters. You have to find the speed thru experimentation, just like you found the speed for 9B & 10B.

Thanks for the information, Johnny!

Johnny, are you retired? If so, this would explain a lot.

Yes I am retired for the last 7 years. Also have some health problems so don't leave the house much. I play on my table average 4 hours a day.:) Johnnyt

I have said many times on here that if you haven't seen or read Joe Tucker's DVD or book "Racking Secrets," then you can't call yourself a 9-ball player. The 9-ball rack is VERY predictable if you know what to look for, 8-ball lesser so.

His DVD would probably make a nice Christmas gift too. :) I have no stake in it, but it is just that good!

I have it and I agree it's worth a lot more than what he's getting for it. After you listen and watch the dvd you'll see why the rack is a big problem in 9-ball and that 10-ball is the game to be played instead. Joe Tucker's Racking Secrets will make you money if you gamble or play 9-ball in tournaments. Johnnyt

Okay How about 8 ball? I don't have the patience to break a thousand times. lol

I'm no expert, but 8 ball is fairly simple in regards to getting a ball to drop in because if it's not spreading by hitting the first ball, generally the second ball break is working and vice versa.

That's just me though and personally, I hate 8 ball.

Breaking

I have found that when there is new cloth on the table (or fairly new, at least) that 'front' breaking is best, but when the table is 'tough' to break, that the 8 ball 2nd ball break is better then.

This experiment took place on a single table. Conclusions not applicable to breaking, in general.

You're right in a way on this. I played on 4 different 9' tables on 4 different days and didn't find much adjustment needed between the 4 tables to beat the 9-ball ghost with BIH.

My BB is outside ane the temp and humidity changes by the hour, so it's kind of like playing on 5 or 6 different tables.

What I was trying to point out in my too long winded post was you don't need to power break in 9-ball to make a ball or 2 and spread the balls out. The power break is just a moncho-man thing IMO transfered from the 8-ball break. The speed I use is harder than Corey's or Donny's...but not much.

Again you're right that every table and temp and humidity condition needs some adjustment, but not as drastic as most seem to think IMO. Johnnyt

Joe Tucker's book, "Racking Secrets" is out print, but the material has been upgraded, improved & included in my book, "The Great Break Shot".

Joe Tuckers "Racking Secrets" dvd is not out of print. Johnnyt

Hey there JohnnyT, my words are that Joe Tuckers original book, "Racking Secrets" is out of print. Sorry if that confused you.

Joe Tucker has a new DVD called "Racking Secrets".

Okay How about 8 ball? I don't have the patience to break a thousand times. lol

8 ball hit the sec' ball , 8 ball goes in the side with a firm hit ..
9 ball cut break is the best on all tables.
10 ball 2
for the center of the table to right with a good follow thru and the 10 should go in the top right picket with the 3 row wing ball will in the left side pocket..
I jump in a speed break tournament in GA,
I hit the stack about 14 - 20 mph
Some people found it funny that i was hitting that slow , But I made 4 to 5 balls on the break .. at 16 mph with a good follow thru..
It was told that i should have try the how many on the break..

FLA some time back, i was at a Tournment play in the break and hope for 20 a man SVB was the only guy to make more balls i made 5 on the snap he made 6 ( on a 9ball rack ). He told me that i have a good follow thru when i break,, 18 mph will get the job done....
