Hello Az here is a Szamboti Cue being offered on Ebay "WOW"

It looks good, but smells funny. It says "made for me", then says"selling for my dad". Awesome cue, strange story. Too rich for my blood in any case, cmon powerball!!!!

Is "locked in the safe, never hit a ball" a way to explain how to sell a cue in "mint" (as in newly made) condition and claim it's a 30 year old cue?

I am on the fence on this one.

I think that the "selling this for my dad" means that the seller is listing it for his father who orginally commissioned the cue.

I don't understand why someone doesn't take the time to write a thoughtful description that makes sense when selling something of this caliber.

I am leaning towards genuine here. I am guessing that anyone truly interested will find out what they need to know.

The seller has a good reputation on eBay and there has already been a bid placed. It appears to be legit, but what bothers me is that in the close up of one of the pictures, it appears that maybe one of the shafts may have been chalked or something like that. One of the shaft tips has a tint of red and the other looks blue/green. The description says unused.

I would sell my other Gus for this one if it was real.......I jus sent him a BUNCH of questions. We'll see how he responds.

The cue is listed as being in Northern NJ and I currently live in the area, so if anybody needs someone to go scope it out, I'd be glad to go and ask questions or whatever you need. Still hoping its real, but have my doubts, sweet Gus if it is indeed real.

Wish I was in your location. I would love to see it in person.

Did anybody see the bottom of the action statement, the guy also says that he has a Gus Szamboti Merry Widow Cue available that is also brand new. I guess some one could Pm the guy for a price and photo's if they were interested.

Below is his auction statement:

Rare Opportunity
One of a kind rare Gus Szamboti pool cue. Never used.
Back in the 1980's I asked Gus to make me a special stick.
He told me it would be one of a kind and he would never make another one.

When he handed me this stick, I put it away for safe keeping and never used it!
This is a rare opportunity for a collector or a player.
I am selling this for my dad, so I will get any questions answered.

Also available Gus Szamboti rosewood Merry Widow style cue, also never used!

Well.... it says local pick up only, no shipping.
So I don't think he would cheat you face to face. A few white lies about never hitting with it a few times might be possible.
$15K cash in your pockets isn't exactly a comfortable feeling though.

Even more hmm...... he is selling something else on eBay, but the other item is located in Florida.... hmmm..... well, maybe the dad is in NY.
For that amount of money I'd be talking on the phone, not just emails and eBay.

I just re-read this thread and saw that manwon already pin-pointed it, but a rosewood merry widow Gus is also being offered... and if we can settle on this cue being original, that would / should mean that the PJ is original as well - and if that's the scenario then I'm a lot more interested in that one.

Things that I don't really like in this cue are the shape of the notched diamond, that doesn't look like one that I've seen on any other Gus's (or Barry's for that matter before) and this could be very well be due just me being illiterate, but it still looks odd to me.

The barbells aren't completely OK for me either, the sides are a bit too rough and one of them (the upper one) is a lot closer to the middle one than the other... something that you wouldn't really expect from a late 80's Gus.

Also, I don't whether anyone thought about it this way but "never used" could also stand for "freshly refinished". The picture of the A-joint looks okay, I mean it shows some age but it really is difficult to tell apart "stored in a safe" from "just refinished".

...the forearm looks good though, the length of the points are what you see on others and the veneer combo is classic as well.

Anyhow, before I just bid 15 thousand on it I'd kindly ask Barry to take a look on this one.

These are just my thoughts, feel free to correct me if you see otherwise! Thanks for the link manwon!

Here is the link to the merry widow cue as he says. No pictures yet but hopefully they will be posted. The description is the same as the other Gus. He just copied and pasted. Same story. Not very descriptive for such a high end cue?

He also says both cues come in the original case. Fellini? If someone could get a picture of the case it would help.

seems weird to me. like others have stated looks a little ruff for a true Gus. Could just be the pictures but Him. Can't see $15,000 for that cue anyway. ANd how can you post something for 12g's and not even put a simple picture up. when you have pictures of the other cue? ANd just copy/paste the same description, that's odd. I'm this is 12grand here and not even a sliver of information about the cues. Wood types, inlays, joint type, wieghts, nothing.

Also, what's the deal with the White Delrin butt cap on the higher end cues. Looks aweful. just my opinion.

Just too good to be true, isn't it?

I CALL BS! JUST SO UNUSUAL THAT A GUY HAS NOT ONE BUT TWO UNUSED GUS SZAMBOTI's WITH ORIGINAL CASES, NO LESS. SHOW THE WORLD BETTER PIX. I WOULD LOVE TO BE WRONG ON THESE. BUT I CALL BS, ANYWAY. I DON'T BELIEVE A WORD OF IT.

15k...now thats a big ass flier to take without provenance. rotsoruck to the buyer...hope he doesnt need it...

Well for what it's worth the guy sent me a message back telling me to contact his dad about the cue. The number he provided for his dad is from Binghamton, New York.

My guess is that this guy is in Florida selling these two cues for his Dad who lives in New York. It definately might be worth someone going to check them out. He says payment is only to be made in person. I would not meet him anywhere else but a police station with payment. Or use escrow at the very least.

I might just give his dad a call.

Comparing pics side by side with the ebay Gus and mine, my points look longer than the ebay cue. Might mean nothing but just something I noticed.

Also, someone else mentioned about the barbells being rough; they definately are rough and not what one would expect from an 80's Gus.
