Was just taking the 2nd to last pass fitting a completed shaft to a just completed cocobolo sneaky, my girlfriend came in and said something, I turned my head for a second, then looked back just as the bearing rolled off the end of the taper bar, and jammed the cutter into the shaft. I was using the power feed. Lesson #1 learned, I'll be locking the door when I'm in the shop from now on. Lession #2, I need a longer taper bar....

ouch, i did a dumb dumb move yesterday.

I am installing a phenolic j/b tip ferrule combo for my friends break cue. I grab the epoxy cartridge and bring it to my workbench, i take a quick look at the back and it says 24 hour cure time. so i start mixing and then slob some on the tenon and inside the phenolic. start sliding it on and twisting and turning to get the air bubbles out and get it flush with the shaft and all of a sudden is starts getting real hard real fast to put on.

i think wtf. i check the mixing cup of epoxy and its set already. i look at the front of the cartridge and its quick cure that sets in 5 min and takes 24 hours to cure.

All in all i got the combo stuck about .25" from the tenon. this was at 12am last night. Stupid me should have waited till today, had to start all over again basically.

As for responding to the girlfriend and not stopping the lathe. In machine shop school,I had to learn to temporarily ignore questions and such so I didn't have to take my eyes off the work or the controls,after a couple mishaps like that when cutting a screw,milling a slot,etc. I hate scrapping things. Consider yourself lucky. I know a few who have lost fingers due to distractions.

those little distractions can be tragic
fortunately for me so far,
the only casualties have been cues or shafts
i've posted lots of "oops" like dave's oops
my latest, indirectly caused by a distacting phone call,
and HUAS (head up ass syndrome)
was turning a shaft, WITHOUT resetting my tailstock to center
that's what i was getting ready to do when i got a call and 20 minutes later forgot about it
needless to say, that shaft had a SEVERE taper :eek::eek::eek:
 
Dumb, Dumber, Dumbest...

I always use my shirt to remove little stains or glue spots because I'm too lazy to get a towel from the roll. That roll is at least five feet away from my lathe...Pffff...

So, one day, I was turning a butt on the lathe and it was just finished and polished. It looked perfect and was just five minutes away of being sold to the customer.

But there it was...just a tiny little spot which I believed was to be a little piece of the polishing cloth on the shiny finish of the cue.

The cue was still turning in the lathe and I took a piece of my shirt and pushed it on the cue with my finger. The cue started rolling up my shirt immediatly so fast. Before I could do anything, I was in my shop, topless and the shirt had rolled itself around the cue.

But the force needed to rip of my shirt from my body was greater than the strength of the butt, that beautiful cue spintered into twenty pieces.

There it was, ruined, just because of my lazyness (over $ 2000 down the drain in less then 2 seconds)...

I was standing with my right arm laid up on the tailstock watching my instructor when I got this tugging sensation. By the time I realized what was going on,and got the machine stopped with the foot brake,I couldn't stand up,and was just short of having to snatch the folding boxcutter from my instructor's pocket to free myself. Tommy D.

i remember reading that, about a year ago??
i've had people at my shop say to me, "arent you cold???" , because i'm always just in a short sleeve t shirt
no long sleeves, ever
but i never thought about the tail of my shirt being a potential hazard until i saw your post
my switch is behind the headstock
i have to reach up and over the chuck with my left hand
the thought of the chuck catching a long sleeve and rolling me up with it scares the hell outta me
 
Automated equipment is a great time saver in a one man shop.
It allows you to be doing two or three things at one time.
It is also one more opportunity for something to go wrong and mess up another cue.

Last taper cut on a new cue bringing the inlays down to final size.
Taper bar set for shaft instead of butt.
By the time I noticed, the cutter was a the "A" joint and the forearm was ruined.

Ever get a ring set on backwards and not notice until the glue was set?

I had a close call a couple years ago while out of work for carpul tunnel surgury on my left hand. I was working one handed turning something and I leaned in to look closer, and felt my left hand moving. Some loose gauze on my bandage got caught in the leadscrew. I had just enough time to pull hard and the gauze ripped. Scared the hell out of me. Took about 20 minutes to get the wrapped gauze out of the leadscrew.

Distractions Are my worst nightmare. That's why I don't have a radio or tv in my shop. I also yelled at my wife when she came into the shop to talk to me. I do t have her anymore so. No worries there. Lolol

Damn minus sign anyway........who ever thought one stinking little line could make such a huge difference?

And the noise it makes.....pants have been almost pissed in over that noise!
 
No kidding. Now I have the soft limits set up so I'll have to work real hard to do it again. 20 carbide teeth go a long way through a hardened center before the stepper motor craps out. All in all it was a 400.00 evening.

The first time I used a razor blade to trim a tip I was shirtless.
I was trying to position myself and my hands to reach over the front chuck.
I didn't realize that my chest was so close to the rear chuck and I got my left nipple a hell of a tweak. I never go shirtless and always careful when positioning my hands and body over the headstock.
