Cutting a ball backwards

Dr. Dave also has a video analysis of this shot in which he measures the angles.
I think you are referring to this video:

But here are some others that are also pertinent:

Most people will never encounter this action on thin cuts on their own because they never use that much side.
FYI, my January '07 BD article discusses and illustrates outside English (OE) effects. Diagram 2 shows how much OE is necessary for "gearing" OE (resulting in no throw). For a 90-degree cut, 80% English is "gearing," so to throw the ball in the SIT direction with a very thin cut, you need more than 80% English.

Regards,
Dave

Im not saying this 90 degree cut cant be done with spin but what i saw of the video of Bob shooting the shot which took him several attempts looks very fishyyyy.
The secret.
1.Music playing the whole time during the video till the end.
2.The cameras veiw of the shot.
3.The turning of the camera man,,,why?
4.Rushing up on the shot as it goes.

What you guys dont realize the camera guy is holding a blow dryer in his
hand and the music covering the sound. He approaches the shot to actualy
blow it towards the whole.Watch the way the ball takes off in slow motion.
The ball kinda starts curving .

Mystery solved(maybe)

With masse' any cut shot is possible. Scotty Townsend and Bo Nelson told me about the greatest shot they had ever seen. The shooter made a bet that within thirty minutes he could shoot from behind the head string and cut a ball placed one diamond below, and one diamond out from, the side pocket backwards into that side pocket. Almost the whole pool room bet against the guy. He masse'd the ball and made the shot on his third try.

I gotta see that one, only because the AIM needed for that is insane. Anyone can masse a ball a hair and change its angle of approach, but to change it that precisely?

Just to be clear, he's doing this?!

CueTable Help

A little PS about bob's shot in the video... I don't know if he's directly addressed this and I just missed it? But I've heard theories they chalked the OB to increase the amount of throw and make the shot possible. Bob?

The balls have to be dirty to work "properly." Sadly, the room where the shot was recorded cleans the equipment regularly, so some adjustment was needed.

As for the impossible cut into the side with masse, Boston Shorty was said to bet on shooting a spot shot (object ball on the foot spot) directly into the side pocket. I've made it several times -- in Virtual Pool.

Bob Jewetts integrity is not for sale for any purpose or amount. Negative rep sent.

A ha! :D

Okay, but seriously, my brain was already taxed by shot I diagrammed. Now you're saying the same shot can be made with the ball on the foot spot? Man, if someone came into the room with that prop bet I would ask a million questions to make sure I wasn't getting suckered, then bet my wallet. I REALLY can't believe that. I can't even fathom how it would work. He isn't kicking it? Is he doing some crazy u-turn masse? How does it go in virtual pool?

Yes. The cue ball goes out to about a diamond past the spot then turns and starts back up the table, hitting the object ball directly into the side pocket. The shot works better on new cloth, except for the owner of the cloth. For a masse shot, this is actually relatively standard except for the length.

lol@"except for the owner of the cloth" ... I've seen U-turn masses to hit a hanger in, but a ball that's several feet from the pocket and a borderline thin cut seems crazy accurate for a masse. I think this is one for florian or eric to get on video. I'd give almost anyone 20 minutes worth of attempts to make such a shot.

I was only kidding ,but thanks for the red rep im sure i deserved it for some reason i guess.I going to to give you a greeny .I dont have any reason to give you one but heck you sound like a great guy.

By the way walmart is having a sale on Sense of humors,,2 for 5$ or 3 for
1$.Get the 3 for a dollar deal its sounds like a better deal and if the first 2 dont take you got 1 more chance...

The position of the object ball on the shockwave animation is correct but the path of the cue ball is not how the shot was made. According to Townsend the player sent the cue ball well past the object ball before the cueball reversed direction to cut the object ball in the side. Townsend said the cue ball never touched a rail! Most extreme masse'!

I just made this shot ..............I will put it on video so you guys can see it.
Took about 20 minutes before i nailed it.

8pack, looking forward to seeing it. Load 'er up with left english? Any chalk added?

Thanks to all who replied to my question about cutting a ball backwards. This is the first time I ever saw the word "gearing" related to pool. I enjoyed all the replies. The commentary, the exchange of dialogue, the knowledge, the videos (which I was able to download with my YouTube downloader application), the humor, and the high level of professionalism from the respondents, makes this most valuable thread that I have seen in awhile.
