I have not read others responses yet. If there were a choice for NEITHER I would have chose that. I chose Hustler. I guess if you never played pool you might at least relate Hustler to pool. Junkie just sounds like a guy who steals cues for smack.

After reading thread, I like Confessions of a Billiard Hall Enthusiast or even Confessions of a Barbox Junkie better...

Still believe a third choice may be better, since both have words have already been used in a pool related movie/book.

That said: "Junkie" brings to mind someone being controlled, more of a loser type, whereas "hustler" carries with it someone "in control", a winner type.

Is your character "controlled", or "in control"?

Jim

Very good observation, and very on point.

I agree with this line of thinking.

The right book title if very important. If your not a top author the title can make you or break you. Johnnyt

Eric,

You can't judge a book by it's cover, but covers do sell a lot of books!

Don't know what your up to, but choose wisely.

I got it!

Confessions of a Pool Fanatic

..conveys the intensity without the negative connotations...
Let the presses roll

I went with junkie, but I think something along the lines of " ... from a pool room sweater" , or "...action-holic" or something like "... from a pro railbird". I don't really thing of junkie as a negative as much any more since tweeker entered our vocabulary.

My choice, as with others, is NEITHER. Both words portray the 'underbelly' side of our sport. Pick a better title...jmo

If it's a bio about a hustler, then Hustler should be in title. IMO the underbelly probably is a lot better sell than what the BCA and other groups trying to sell the whip cream on a hot dog look for the last 30 years. That has taken pool far. Johnnyt

Im not saying who but someone has opted for a Title that an infinite number of monkies with typewriters would reject!!

How about the title of the thread itself:

"VERY IMPORTANT POLL"

Wow, Fatboy. You were right. This poll is incredibly important. I recommend a full page spread in the NY Times.

... I'm just saying :p

context may be required...

i think unless i knew what it would be used for it's not possible for me to pick one. I may feel one is a better movie title vs.the other for a book title vs. one for a store or website, etc...

Will be anxiously awaiting clarification.

KC

Pretend you didnt play pool and you saw 2 books for sale, could be at a book store or online anywhere. It has nothing to do with the movie.

Remebering that you dont play pool, or you did play pool 20 years ago, But bearing in mind your not a active pool player right now which title is best????

This is very important, i will say when I can. I give the forum my word. I plead that everyone please vote on this if you dont like me or what ever it is inportant.

thanks

Eric

If I saw the "hustler" title, I would assume the book is about a pool player.

If I saw the "junkie" title, I would wonder if the book was about someone who likes to hang out at pool rooms (like a railbird) or someone who is hooked on drugs.

Both titles play upon strong images we have. The "junkie" title would make me read the synopsis and plays more on my curiousity.

Chris

My condolences

I am asking everybody in an accounting firm as we speak. Absolutely none of them are players.

Rory-hang in there.

Staff is likely familiar with a variety of 'hustles' if your client base is sufficiently large and diverse enough.

Have a tax department? or everybody pitch in during the 'season'?

Have fun! Cut/paste and attach something will ya.

Take care-pace yourself.

PS: 'hustler confessions' titling might sell more books-it reflects the negative image known to most non-players(the buying public)

Naming the hustler only piques the interest of informed pool fans.

Hustler?

I just spoke with my brother, Robert (Cotton, Bobby) LeBlanc and he said he liked the word Hustler in the title, HOWEVER, basically he was not a hustler and doesn't want to give that impression. He has some great stories to tell (hundreds of them), and they all circle back to him being mostly a "stand-up" kind of guy. I think most people in the pool world will agree. I liked the word "fanatic" and Robert and I will discuss it. Any more ideas would be great. Again, if anyone wants to see the cover of the book, email me at sydney@ffpublish.com ---it might spark more ideas. Thank you. Syd:wink:

To the mainstream the term "pool room junkie" would mean an iv drug user who hangs around a pool room.

Hard to say witch title would atract more interest though.I voted hustler.

I dont like either...the only confessions I want to hear are those of a poolroom nympho-maniac:D...how about something like "Living Off The Break"...

"Admissions of" sounds better than "Confessions of". "Admissions" makes it sound like the story will be more about all of the crazy things seen in a lifetime of pool playing. "Confessions" makes it sound like someone has done wrong and want to get it off chest. But yah email me cover... PM sent.

With all due respect, I would have to lean toward neither title. Like someone posted earlier, they have been done, and both titles are stale, and outdated.
I brainstormed it briefly, and this is what I came up with....
Title
" Geometry of a Pool Hall"

Subtitle.....
'Sometimes the spheres turn square'....

It leaves the potential reader intrigued by the title, yet the title(and subtitle) is very relevant.
Good luck Eric!
