Why do bangers think they deserve a shot at the table?

When I'm at the bar playing some bar box 8ball, I'm trying to break and run everytime. Although it doesn't happen as often as I'd like, I always here people complaining that they don't get to shoot? ;) Isn't that the point of the game, to pocket all of your balls in the least amout of innings? In the last few weeks I've been sharked a few times when I was about to run out. I understand that they put 75 cents in the table, but don't they understand what I'm trying to do? (don't talk to me when I'm shooting) :outtahere: I know what your all gonna say that I should just go to the pool hall and play some real players, but I like to go to the bar on Friday...

Well since they paid money, they want some casual fun, they didn't expect an exhibition. I'm not surprised, but I wouldn't pull back and let them win either.

It makes me wonder if on another forum some one is asking the question "why does that guy i shoot on fridays whine when i talk to him while he is trying to run out on me"

Oh, I'd say that they understand all too well what you are trying to do (i.e., get free playing time at their expense)!

Ergo, I'd expect them to do one or more of the following in order to get some table time:

(1) shark you anyway they can

(2) pull up stakes (i.e., their challenge quarters) and let you practice by yourself with your own quarters until your done

(3) move to a different table, if available

We had some bangers in our in house 9-ball league. They really like to play, but were difficult to play. One of their players liked to walk around the table and tell you how good you were shooting in the middle of your stroke!! The captain of my team finally got sick of it and told him to sit down and shut the f**k up. After that they quit showing up for league.

In my opinion, most actually think they are fairly good and deserve to win. They never go to a pool hall and actually see how many good players are out there.

I am the same way in a sense

I like to go shoot at night on Friday & Saturday at one of the local bars, that still has a newly felted and well-kept Fifty-cent table. I usually go one of those nights, because I just like to play people with different skills and styles. You get some bad, and some good, and might even get the occasional beer out of it. Usually I have a few of my APA teammates also show up, so there is some friendly competition.
I could go to a pool hall, but I like to meet other people, and usually the pool hall has the same people each week, so it is the bar for me.

Yes, some of these people think they can play pool (which some cannot), but it is still fun, and sometimes you just gotta play without care, and enjoy being out. I try shots that I normally would not try (low percentage), and now I have some shots that I consider to be much higher percentage shots in my repertoire for my league and tourney matches.

I win some, I lose some, but in the end I have fun, and isn't that the point?.
Is there sharking by some of these competitors? Sure, but it just doesn't bother me, not much bothers me when I play - I pretty much tune out everything else around me. Just ask my wife!!! Just more skills I can add to my game.

If you are having fun, and enjoying playing some form of Pool, it can't be all bad.

I guess the difference is that they're just looking to have a good time and they may have to wait a while to have it... like there's a line of people hoping to play and only a couple of tables. It sucks to wait in line, pay money, and get nothing. You can understand that thinking, right? Pool is a weird game in that one competitor doesn't get to play. If they were competing at any of the bar games... pinball, darts, foosball, whatever... that can't happen.

For the record I never give anyone a free chance and just say "yeah, that sucks to be you." But I also play in pool halls where you can start shooting right away and get to play more than 1 rack.

I hope I don't come off smugly but... I don't know why you think things might play out differently. Hey, I can feel your frustration. Things is, people don't like losing, especially when they're drinking and they don't stand much of a chance.

I think it just comes with the territory. Sorry... Some people are jerks and we can count on it. Wax 'em and shrug it off. Good luck going forward!

This, they paid money, they want a chance to play....actually, unless you bring a crowd and spend a lot of money, you maybe taking money out of the bar owners pocket by running off people that might want to play....

Sometimes it's not necessarily a bad idea to lose every 4th game or so, make some friends.......also, if you know the guys speed and he's not one to run out, missing an early ball and letting him shoot is sometimes a safe move....bar play can get dicey....

Maybe you need to find a Bar without Bangers, or a Real Pool Hall. Honestly the Bangers are upset because they came to play pool, and you are not allowing them their turn.

How would you fell playing the BEST BAR PLAYER in the world, and all you got to do was PAY, RACK, & Watch??

The question is, what are you going to the bar for?
If you are going to play pool, then you should know what to expect.
I have played many bangers in my time and they have complained about me "winning too much" many times. Doesn't make a difference if you're in a bar or not. People don't like losing, and half-drunk bangers are no exception.

If you want to beat the pants off everyone in a bar and you KNOW they can't play then you're either showing off, or running from a real challenge from playing a regular in a poolroom. If you want to be sociable and make some new friends then scale your game back a little and let them win a few.

So we're back to why you're really there...to win, win, win...or just bang around a few balls, relax and meet some new people. If the latter is true, you cannot be concerned about playing great pool and working on your runout patterns, because some of these people might just think you're showing off.

Can't have it both ways in a bar atmosphere, IMO.

I have a serious addiction to pool, and if I'm at the bar I can't just watch. :banghead: I will usually switch it up and play partners after a few games to equal out the playing field. This bar is like cheers in my home town (not the real cheers;)) and I know the owner and most of the regulars well. I just get pissed when some random people come in and they start waving their hands around yelling about not getting a shot. I guess it just gets under my skin and I'm sharked easily. After a few beers I tend to get a little cocky and need to tone it down a little bit. :groucho: I can't believe this site is free, it's better they a Psychiatrist. I feel better already...:rotflmao:

This thread is cracking me up.

I'm just doing what I can to help out.

Bar pool

Honestly, I think lesser skilled players seem to get scared away from better players more nowadays than a few years ago. I always saw a good player as a challenge growing up and looked forward to another match, but times may have changed. Even when you let them get a few shots in, they'll just quit if they don't win.

If we are only playing for Quarters then....

I would love it!! I do not mind playing better players, since I want to get better, and that is one of the ways to do it. Especially if it is only gonna cost me quarters a game.

But once again, I like pool, and I want to learn more. Bangers think they are already good, and are upset they are losing, even though they should - I will say that not all the people I play are like that, but there is always one a night. NOT ALL people who play in a bar and aren't very good, can be considered a BANGER!!
And I always try to play around to make it fair - shoot lefty, bank mid % shots, etc.
But I also do not try to LOSE!!!

My dad taught me "NO MERCY" at a young age. No karate kid reference here!!!:p We used to play every weekend(almost every single one) when I was 5, and he never let me win - NEVER!!! I won my first game when I was 8, and it meant something to me, and probably the reason behind how I play right now. I can remember how the whole game was played, though I am 38 now.

Don't forget the pool table deserves respect - seen too many of the bangers believe it is an ashtray, coaster, seat, etc. If you go to a bar, and decide to play pool - respect the game and the table!! Otherwise, you get to stand around and watch me play - you might learn something!

My 2 cents-

Michael

Bangers just have a different mindset and you have to remember that when you play them. These are the guys who gauge how well a game of 8-ball is going by who has more balls on the table at the moment.
