8: Hurricane Higgins

I don't know much about snooker players. By the way, how is "The Nugget" nowadays? Any news?

At the age of 52 Steve is still ranked in the top 30 (#23 to be exact). He hasn't had much success in the last few years, his last final was in 2005 (Uk Championships against Ding Junhui). He has also qualified for the televised stages of the World Championhips this year. I have small sweat bet on him, only because the odds are so high that I stand to win a lot but not lose anything :).

What's incredible about him, is that he is well known to practice very little these days and I believe he only plays ranking tournaments, but yet he is still able to maintain a good enough standard to stay within the the top 30. Compare that to more dedicated, hard working and younger players who can't even break into the top 50.

Fun fact: Steve has the record for winning 81 professional snooker tournaments. Stephen Hendry has won 74. Ronnie O'Sullivan holds the number 3 spot with 44.

Thanks much for the good info Cameron.

I just got a paperback edition of his biography form a bookstore in England.
I was going to post something along the lines of if he still plays 9 ball or is he just concentrating on Snooker now.

Besides being a great, great champion, he was also a very good & funny commentator during the World 9 Ball Pool Championships.

He just plays snooker and I think he also does some broadcasting stuff in England too. He only ever played in the Matchroom Sport events but they started to conflict with the ranking tournaments on the tour. There are so few of them now, you can't afford to miss one. I don't think he could get back into those 9 ball tournaments as he would have to qualify I think. Too bad, I really enjoyed watching him and listening to his commentary.

As for Alex Higgins, he had throat cancer, he can barely talk now. Still plays decent snooker, but not good enough for the tour from what I understand.

YES. This was by far the hardest one. Nice job!

I wonder if a Canadian had not answered whether anyone would have got Cliff Thorburn?

Ayuh, I woulda got him..... Just saw this thread today.

Interesting side note.. I think there is a youtube video where Willie Thorn was supposed to be simply demonstrating how to achieve a high break, but ends up running a 147.

Or so it seemed... :D :D :D

Later, either Willie or the co-commentator mentions it was not really a 147.

Personally, my high break is right around 80, but I didn't play snooker much.
