My First SBE

Jamison, I watched you hitting masse shots on that 7' table near the 14.1 booth. You may not have done it much, but you certainly did try it out. I know because I was in the middle of one of my many attempts on the 14.1 challenge. I think you were chatting it up with the asian kid with the 8 ball shaved in his head while you were hitting balls...if that helps you remember.

I was down there during the day one time. I am very sorry bro...I will get you into the next one on me I'll pay for it...I hope you can forgive me. Send me your name so I can pay Charile. When you show up you will be in.

You are right I did invent a really cool shot while at valley forge had to make it...I made it first try, and then tried it a few times during the 14.1 my bad.

Send me your name I'll pay for two tries for you not just one ok man???

In all honesty while I loved the people from crown cues Gene and Renee both the masse shots constantly banging into the table were a bit much especially when you had John Schmidt on 200 balls. Jamison that had nothing to do with you buddy as I know the situation with Crown.

Guys again also enough good can not be said about Tom from Triple Cross Cues both his cues and his demeanor through out our event were awesome. He was helpful complimentary and let me tell you I had the pleasure of shooting with almost all of his cues including one sweet wrapless curly mapled handle tulipwood beauty and they all hit fantastic one better than the next.

So Tom thanks again.

No need for an apology here. I wasn't sharked by you or anything like that. I stopped to watch you for a minute and just wanted to point out what OTHER people may have found distracting.

Thanks for the offer, but I will py for my own 300 tries next year:D.

Hi Lou
Well at least that confirms that. I walked by you on the stairs and thought to myself I know that guy and it took the gears a little too long to get going before I realized it was you. Hope you didn't think I was rude so a belated hello.
And I agree about the lower level, I went downstairs and walked into an area that had a subtle blend of BO and that grease smell and I thought I was going to blow chunks then and there.
I'm still coming back for more next year though!!!
Paul

Hey, Paul -- I didn't see you, so no harm no foul :-)

And I don't blame you for going back, it being so close to where you live, relatively speaking. It's kind of like the DCC for me -- just 3 1/2 hours by car.

I hope that I can at least force you into letting me buy you your favorite beverage.

You should plan a trip to vegas around the 12th to the 20th of may another great big pool players party is out there bro. The BCA Nationals. It is a riot!

I did not interupt the 14.1 with masse shots at any time. I was not at that booth you guys are refering to. They made it very clear they dont want me shooting shots with their cues at their booth.

I did play pool there in the morning one day before the 14.1 started...The people shooting the masse next to that 14.1 pit are not connected to me in anyway.

I did shoot a few games of pool on the 14.1 table...Funny story I watched the booth for the 14.1 overnight so Charlie & crew could get some rest. I had the balls, and no cue...I had a rake so I played all night on that table with a boomstick...lol Highrun...I dont want to bragg...It would knock all my action.

OK no affiliation to the masse destruction going on during highrun 14.1 contest. I am not going to name, names either.

Just a word about the masse table thing going on by the 14.1 Challenge: to me, it was a pretty funny thing and, given all the other mayhem and distractions going on in the aisles, a relatively minor distraction. For those not there, there was a booth with a 7' Diamond set up right next to the two 9' 14.1 tables. And, at various times, there would be as many as three or four guys, all in 3C vests and armed with masse cues (with price tags dangling from the butt ends), shooting masse shots.

Now, it wasn't like they were setting up demonstration shots, one at a time. Instead, they would all just get up, crowd onto this little table at the same time -- often with a knee perched on a rail -- aim the cue straight into the table, and shot these little masse shots over and over again.

"Thoonk."

"Thoonk-Thoonk."

"Thoonk-Thoonk-Thoonk."

They wouldn't look at what the other couple of guys were doing -- they'd all just just stay in their own little space, and shoot the same shot, over and over and over again, as if playing some maniacal game of "Poke-a-Mole." This would go on for long periods of time. Like I said: pretty funny stuff, at least to moi :-)

John Schmidt ran 200 balls at this challenge ? Can you elaborate ? thanks!

Lou...Mickey must have switched the station. He had it on Classic Rock while I was there, and we both commented on how that was great music! LOL BTW, I'm 56...I know you're younger! :grin-square:

Now wait a minute, Scott, we can't be that different in ages :-) After all, it was all 50's music.

Hey Lou in regards to lying to you I find that to be a bit harsh considering the situation. Now while I understand where you are coming from and I would have been pissed to I was told from Charlie Williams that he was going to play one inning and that was it. Look at it from my perspective for a second as a tournament promoter and director. The winner of the 2010 Derby City Straight Pool Challenge and possibly one of the biggest promotors of our game just told you hes going to take another inning. Do you bench him for one of the equally important customers and make him wait for their 5 innings in which he will most likely leave or do you let him go. It is an impossible situation.

One of the original caveats to the challenge that I think everyone will attest to is that we were going to make allowances for the people with matches. Lou I truly am sorry that you had a long ass wait time and didnt get to go again man. I truly am. In that same vein next year I would like to extend to you a try on me. Please accept that as a token of my apology for your bad experience. Simple as that. Oh and I agree completely with the smell down there and where we were it seemed like we were down wind of the wafting scent.

Sincerely,
Charlie

Charlie, I apologize for the "lie" comment. It's just the way getting bumped came off. (In fact, I remember you encouraging him to take more innings, if he wanted.) And, if I recall correctly, he kept on shooting after his second inning, and took at least one more. I'm not sure, because I went off in search of the beer tent :-)

Overall, I thought it was a great freshman effort for the event and you guys are to be commended for all the time, money, and energy you put into it. And I acknowledge that it being your event, you can run it anyway which way you please. It seems to me that pros being given preferential treatment, whether it's tournament scheduling or something else, is just par for the course. Like I said, after such a long wait, it really hit me wrong.

Good luck with future editions -- I'm sure they'll continue to be successful.

Oh, but one word of advice for future challenges: invest in a shot clock :-)

Oh wait Lew, Jam was very good also. I miss her input.

Lew, I'm a pool player, that happens to be good at telling stories. Your very good at describing what's really going on.

All your words are carefully thought out and presented very well. Much like a straight pool player or a one pocket player would do, on every shot.

I'm a nine-ball player. I just throw a bunch of words out there and let my editors worry about the rest.

You just lost a few potential customers with that post. It indicates that what was important was that it was charlie williams, not match scheduling. You can't really say that about charlie and then say "equally important customers" and expect anyone to believe you mean it.

Well either way everyone, sorry if I distracted you in any way...My favorite game is straight pool.

I wish there were two divisions like a pro, and non pro. Then part of the prize for non pro is a chance at playing the pros in the final day. Like maybe 1st, and 2nd non pros get to step up to the table. Make since anyone?

RELAX
Stop it you are being petty!

He wasn't being petty, he was being honest. If more people were honest instead of always being "politically correct" the world would be a better place. He simply relayed his experience, nothing wrong with that.

If anyone was being petty or overly dramatic, it is Bobby. He spent 3 paragraphs explaining numerous reasons why his play might have been perceived as slow. The fact of the matter is, slow play is excruciating for those watching or waiting. The only people that seem to not have a problem with slow play are the slow players themselves. For the rest of us, they're party poopers that make us want to poke our eyes out.

I've had different experiences at the SBE over the yrs, some good, some bad. When time, funds, and work allows, I go. When things won't allow it, I don't go. I can take it or leave it but I do enjoy it and would choose to go than not go if I have an option.
