Why do so many people think that if their down they disserve another chance at the match. If im tired after six or seven races why cant you pay and me leave. Thats the idea of a set. I beat you its up to me if I want to play again. NOT YOU!!!! Why set up a race if you arent going to pay and loose valiently. I had a guy tonight over a barrel after I had been playing multiple mathces adjusting the weight for more then 4 hours he said im down you cant leave. F--- that S--t. If we set it up for so many matches okay but if all it ever was was a single race and you kept wanting more after loosing and then I get tired and now my game is falling off it is completly within my right to quit on you!!!! Wheather im up or down!!!!

Sorry guys im more just venting here.

I know a few people may not agree with me but you are who im speaking too. Set up multiple sets if you want multiple sets. Dont set up a race and then loose and then set up one more race and then loose. Lock in the number of sets you want and Ill sweat it out with you. If you only set up single races I can quit when I want!!!!

I still ended up ahead but I wanted to go HOME!!!!!:eek:
 
I would say that after four hours of playing it would be somewhat ok quitting winner. It would be different if you played one or two sets and ran off. Either way though, some will say that you have to give the guy a chance, but how many chances are you supposed to give? I had a guy get into a heated discussion about this at the pool hall one day. His argument was that you should give the guy a chance to win HIS money back, but the way I see it, its MY money now, he lost it when he didnt win the set! I dont gamble anymore, but if I did, Id play a few sets, but if I felt my game was falling off after hours and hours of playing, hell yes Id quit winner.

You had a right to quit when he wanted the spot adjusted in his favor. Just say ,"No."

I wonder this same thing all the time. It makes no sense that you must keep playing someone until you start playing bad for them to get a chance to get there money back. It's fairly obvious after 3-4 sets if they have a chance to win and if they can't and you don't like the spot THEY propose then quit.

I've lost money before trying to do the stand up thing.

It was the first time I've ever gambled for anything really and I played this guy starting at 50 dollar sets. We played from 9 at night to 10 the next morning and we got up to 2-3 hundred a set race to 5, 9 ball on the BarBox. I was playing great most of the night and stayed up around 6-7 hundred but the guy had alot more gambling experience then me and wouldn't quit. I eventually started playing bad and he got back to even and I quit. At the time I was wanting to hear the guy say he couldn't beat me and he quit, the money didn't really matter at the time. Now I know that if I'm playing a guy and I feel he doesn't have a chance but never asks for a spot or anything after 3-4 sets I will quit before my game starts going down hill and I pretty much give him his money back cause I didn't know when to stop.........lesson learned
 
poolhustla61508...The "stand up thing"? What the heck is that? If someone asks to play ONE set, and wants to gamble, either player has the right to quit and walk away. If you agree to a certain number of sets, or a time limit, then quit at the end of the period you agreed upon BEFORE you started playing. Continuing to play, when you don't want to, labels you a 'sucker' in my book. If someone is losing, and the winner doesn't want to adjust the spot (if there is one), the winner should walk away. I hope Alex got paid after every set, and didn't get stiffed because he didn't want to continue playing.

It's been years since I gambled with strangers, but that's the main thing that keeps me from going out and looking for action these days. I get bored too easily and playing the same game with the same person for 5 hours straight doesn't really appeal to me.

give notice ahead of time that you plan to quit and you greatly reduce the chance there will be problems when you quit.

quitting winner after a few sets or one set and your a nit and bad action imo.
 
personally I think you should always give the guy a chance to win his money back...not saying that I do that, but thats cause I'm a greedy coward.
 
I'd say letting them know you want to leave a set or two before hand is fair if you are playing races to 7 or longer.

Sorry no good low-life lazy nits quit on me when I am down. I only quit when I'm ahead if I have good reason. It's time to go walk the dog, I just noticed my nails need doing, my hair is a mess, I didn't realize what time it was, I forgot it was my exmother-in-law's birthday and I want to go celebrate she and my wife being exes, my neighbor's cat is due to have kittens and I need to go check on her . . . .

Quit winner, quit loser, doesn't matter. Either guy can quit when the set is over & I don't see it wrong either way. A guy loses his money then he lost. Giving him a chance to get it back if you feel like he has the edge because of your fatigue or lack of interest makes you a sucker, a fish. Quitting winner means you have money in your pocket.

The problem I see so much is the gambling addicts who can't stop, winner or loser. They are addicted to gambling & never want to stop. I avoid games with those guys because I feel like i'm exploiting their sickness if I win & keep winning. It's not about the money for me. I play my best when i'm gambling & I love playing well. If it costs me then so be it. If I get paid for it, so be it. But when i'm done, I quit, regardless of whether i'm winner or loser. If my opponent doesn't like me quitting, then he shouldn't have gambled with me. It's gambing, by the very definition. Just making a game is a gamble. You are gambling on whether the guy will quit or stick around.
 
kinda like Smorgs line he use to say about not being able to stay and play bc he had an important appt to go wash his hair. God that guy was funny!

if you read my whole post, I said it was my first time really gambling and I thought at the time when you were gambling it wasn't right to quit while your ahead if the other person wanted to keep playing. But as I said I was new to the gambling scene at the time so there's no need to call me a sucker....I know better now
 
once i play the originally agreed upon race, after that is complete, i'll quit anytime i damn well please. if my opponent doesnt like it, too damn bad.

I agree. Nobody is under any obligation to let someone win their money back. They had their chance during the race. As someone said, that's why you play a race. I certainly don't see it out of line for the loser to ask for another set....but to get upset if you don't want to play is blasphemus.
 
I grew up with the loser deciding when the game is over. Otherwise you were bad action.

Now with a job and responsibilitys, I ALWAYS tell my opponent when we start how long I can play.

1. If you can't play for an indefinate period of time, ALWAYS disclose how many sets or how much time you have.
2. If you didn't follow number 1 and quit winner, its nitty.

Why can't you play again some other time..... around here, it is considered bad form to just quit when you're ahead. To 'quit winner' is not really what most players do around here. If you are winning, apparently, you are going to win more money, so why would you quit? If you are tired, then you say, "Man, this is my last set. Let's do this another day." When that day comes, you gladly take his money again.

Good post. To follow that up, the couple times I have EVER had to postpone to another day, I make him hold his money until we start up again.
 
Quitting while your ahead

Man have times changed. 25 Years ago when you matched up you played until the loser ran out of money or he quit. This meant matches could last a long time (10 hours plus). I played one time for 28 hours non stop. There are players who have played several days before busting their opponent. Back then quitting as a winner was wrong and would be considered bad action.

Today I have seen matches where someone asks you to play and if they win the first set they quit. BAD ACTION!!! Everybody seems to want to take a flyer at somebody. They will risk loosing a set knowing their opponent will lose 3 or 4 sets. Thats 4-1 on the money. NITS!

I am 56 years old now and if I decided to gamble with somebody I will tell them that I will play up to 6 hours. My opponent can decide if he wants to play me or not. I TELL THEM THIS BEFORE WE START PLAYING.
