How do you win with this layout?

Play safe.

so, i was left with this shot on the 9 ball.

My thought was to try the bank but load up with left on the cue ball and hope it tightens up the bank angle enough to throw it in... But i still got a double kiss and left him with an easy out.

Any ideas to share, or do i just need to practice that shot more?

Thanks!
Anthony

CueTable Help

here's my attempt to draw what i tried:

CueTable Help

depending if i couldn't bank it for sure or if it is borderline might not bank rather than sell out i would play safe.

It takes precision aim. Shot it just a hair to the left of center so the cue ball double kisses and comes off the object ball and hits the foot rail. The object ball might come out a little but make sure you hit the object ball just right so they can't shoot it to the left. Practice this shot a little and you will see that with a little practice you can nail it.

At least now you force the other player to make a shot to win or try to play you safe again. Chances are you will like your next shot better than the last.

The one rail bank does go... technically. Being the cb is froze to the rail also, it makes the bank even lower percentage than it already is. While it does go, there is no way I would be trying it unless I had no other choice.

The 3 rail bank, while seemingly crazy to some, is not that low a percentage shot for someone familiar with it. However, I wouldn't be going for it in this case.

The kick would be my first choice to try and make it. Cutting it would be my second choice, but, I really don't like the cut with the cb froze. It requires a small masse or curve to make the cut.

Game situation, below is what I am going to do. I don't like giving my opponent a shot at the 9, but I figure I'm low percentage to make the ball anyways. Since he is probably getting to the table anyways, I might as well make it as hard on him as I can. I'm leaving a bank on the 9 for him, but if I do it right, he has to reach besides just make the bank. Hopefully, he misses it.

Thanks Neil for keeping it real. A good player might even go a little farther down table with the cue ball.

genomachino, I see that you're as bad with the wei table as I am. In either case what you suggest here is a very high percentage shot and one just needs to understand it and practice it.

There was a thread a couple of weeks ago that was very similar to this one and I also suggested what you propose here. It certainly will buy you another shot and your next turn will most likely be with better opportunities.

I agree with everything Neil says here. The kick is a sucker's shot, no matter how good you think you are at kicking. You have to lay-up here and hope for the best. I've actually made this shot in the top left corner on a double kiss but was unable to replicate the shot when story-telling time was in order. It sucks. You WANT to be the favorite to win every time you're shooting at the 9 but sometimes that's simply not the case.

You guys seriously don't like kicking when the OB is like 1 ball width from the hole, and exactly equidistant from the rails? As diagrammed it looks like you can almost hit it right in the face and rattle it in. Maybe I'm just overly familiar with my local rails but I feel over 60% to win the game on this kick. I feel less than 50% to win just bunting. I'm gonna set it up at the pool hall tomorrow. If I don't make it on the first try, I'm gonna say you guys are right. Not scientific but I can't see anyone refusing this kick.

Nice call, The shot was even on a bar table. I have to think that kicking that ball in on a bar box is pretty easy even with the ball frozen on the rail. The other thing is if you play the safe that has been discussed against a good player you are going to end up with a tougher shot than you started with if they don't make the ball.

Creedo, the kick would be the right shot if the object ball was just a bit OFF the rail. Like an eighth to a quarter inch off the rail. Then it's a big ball, much more makable. Frozen to the rail (as shown) and that length a kick, and it is a fairly hard shot. You've got to hit it perfect to make it.

Agree. And one way to do that is a kick safe towards the short rail TO THE LEFT of the cueball. Then you will create a wider angle where the cue ball goes further down table after hitting the nine ball on the right side, leaving the nine ball on the middle of the short rail.

Practise these fairly soft kick safeties, and you have a whole new set of alternatives.

how about this?

I thought about going rail first, as well. One thing to consider is whether or not the 9 is actually frozen. If it is, you have to eliminate this option altogether since there's a significant portion of outcomes that will result in a foul. If it's not actually frozen, one can expect some positive results.
