Here We Go. Gamble vs. Non-Gamble Story

Just like we've been talking about. I'm hitting balls with friends and just fu#$ing around. Brian (BP3000) and Mark (No Clue) and me were literally banking every other ball and just drinking and laughing and talking about useless shit, when this guy with a big case comes in and sits at the bar. He's watching and giving that "I would love to play these clowns" look. So, I can't help myself. I ask him to play some if we can get a table. "Sure, I can't wait to play you some for anything, any game. Just get us a table." I'm getting excited, with a "win or lose" situation ahead of me. So, my friends and I end our game early and I approach John Rinko. I'm pretty sure that was his name. "Let's play, table's open. Break out your wallet." "Why you gotta gamble?" I knew where this was going. NOTHING. Absolutely nothing. But, he was cracking jokes and talking while I was banking every third ball, and two railing every fourth one. "You could play me any time for any thing. I gotta go right now, though. I'll come back some other time."

See, this is why people that WILL match up don't like guys that won't. If you won't, that's fine. But, this is very indicative of the "big talker." I talk too. But, most of the time, I'll even make a bad game to play some. I don't have much of a choice around here. This guy wouldn't bet fatback is greasy. Next Tuesday? That's what he said. Next Tuesday. I'm holding my breath. If you don't gamble, say so. Don't get shitfaced and then come up with this kind of shit. Sorry, but this is SO appropriate for the forums right now. Talk to me.

If you don't play for money, then don't. But, keep your funny talk to yourselves if you won't play. Talk to me now.

Did this for real happen just like you said? Seriously?

- you're beating 'em around having fun and he's watching and making comments
- you ask if he wants to play some
- he says "I can't wait to play you some for anything, any game"
- he then says "why you gotta gamble" five minutes later?

I mean, I can see why you'd think that was some dumb shìt, but the problem is it's SO dumb I almost can't believe it went down that way. No details left out? Why would he suggest he wants to play for money and then basically say 'wait, why do we have to gamble? I'll come back later and we'll gamble' That's goofy. I never heard of something like that, there's no way this is some kinda epidemic.

man i know a guy locally that i always ask to play when i see him. he used to rob me but now i can hold my own against him. anyway i always say "hay you wanna play some cheap" and he always says "nah, i worked today and i gotta go soon" which is always followed by him standing around for 2-3 hours doing nothing. he just waits around for someone who can't play at all to come in and tries to rob 'em $1 a game.

there's nothing wrong with guys that won't bet. they should just say so though. as a friend of mine once said "don't talk about it. be about it!"

Unless you're willing to play for your life, you're not really playing for much.

now that's the stupidest thing i've ever heard. basically if you were playing for lives there wouldn't really be a winner there'd only be a loser. what good would it be for the winner to have the other guy dead

Darn. I thought somebody was starting a thread about me. :D

I laughed with my buddy about this trend in threads and this. Yes. Just like this.

Hey, I've been busting some of your chops about this gambling issue for a while now, but even I agree that if you're gonna talk about it, you ought to do it. That's just silly stuff, barking and woofing and then not actually stepping up.

You should have made him post some earnest money for when a table opened up!. OK, just kidding...kind of.

I had a similar thing happen to me but with a happy ending: after screwing around with a friend at the table like you described (not looking for action), this guy chased me into the bathroom to play for any amount - I had known who he was for about a year and wanted to play him, but he didn't know me. He talked like he wanted to play for hundreds, but when it was time to play, he had $60 on him, but at least he played. I beat him out of the $60 and his cue and we set a date to play again so he can win his cue back. He was talking about playing for $500 sets, which turned out to be $150 sets but he played. We played every once in a while after that and he did end up losing a nice amount.

I know it's not the same as a total non-gambler barking like he wants to play, but it was the closest thing I got to add. (And fond memories for me ).

I know where you're coming from crawfish but you have to up your game. He was talking smack because he thought he would be stealing until you were nice enough to wise him up before you had him trusses and tied.

I do hate it when they talk shit and then are only looking to steal and run like a drunk penguin the second they see any backbone.

My thoughts exactly. This wouldn't happen. When the guy says "I can't wait to play you some for anything..." that's the time to establish the game and stakes. Then if he starts to crawfish you can just ask him to leave.

Go to North Carolina, usually goes like bet $50 and the other guy pulls out $2k and then you get your money together and then the guy wants the 7. People do stuff like this all the time. Most of the time they don't want to play they just want to show you they have enough money they can care less about yours.
