why am i -- a pool neophyte -- so taken with this strange, introverted sport?

when puzzled by significant life questions, i often revisit that renowned philosopher, fran lebowitz for guidance and enlightenment.

as always, doctor lebowitz came through with her observation that 'the outdoors is something you pass through between your apartment and a cab.'

bingo! (as they probably say wherever that game is played. by the by, whatever in the world is cow-tipping?)

pool is indoors! as are clubs, restaurants, dive bars, delis (speaking of which another great philosopher, damon runyon, observed, 'there are two kinds of people in the world, those who love delis and people you shouldn't associate with.') museums, bedrooms, galleries, libraries, bakeries, bookstores, coffee shops, jazz joints ... well, you get the idea!

everything good and natural and enjoyable -- such as pool -- takes place indoors.

now i know some people farm outside and there are probably other minor sunlit activities, but pool is where human people belong -- inside! is there any other sport that isn't played outdoors? (i don't consider bingo a sport!)

so, fellow albinos, in conclusion i am starting to realize that pool speaks to the natural heartbeat of humanity, that innate thrum of natural order which hums its subliminal message of healthful living ... don't go outside!

This opens up a regularly recurring can of worms as to whether pool is a sport or not.

A few things we call a sport are played indoors traditionally... basketball comes to mind.
More debatable sports would be bowling, ping pong, darts, racquetball, squash...

Since you mention clubs and dive bars early in the list, maybe your original thought about "this will be neat in a drinking down sort of way" wasn't far off the mark.

Wow, CreeDo... You understood all that jabber? I thought I rambled on a lot, but that was way beyond my own limits required to comprehend the statement intention!!

Kudos to you for sticking through that all the way to the end and being able to respond, too!

In my own meek response to the original post, I prefer to be outdoors and hope to one day have my own outdoor pavilion with a band stand, a dance floor and a nice pool table. Great for family reunions.

Hi Jes ^^
I sense you don't go for that writing style. But a little variety makes the forum spicy. I haven't seen anything out of sunny in a bit. Did the passing fancy already burn out?

i find that the only thing indoors that i enjoy IS pool. almost everything else is outdoors and dirty. wierd

I enjoy SEX indoors as well

Not only POOL can be enjoyed indoors. BJs and flat out SEX can be enjoyed while indoors or outdoors but it qualifies for both environments.

Backyard sex is always good. Then head to the garage for some 9 ball? Is that indoors or outdoors? THE GARAGE ???

Sonny, I didn't understand a word you said and I think CreeDo was only pretending to, but if you ever need to know anything about a cue tip, I'm your man. :)

See, Tramp and his olde fashionede writing style, combined with their olde blacke and white[e] avatars... there's a perfect match. Speaking of mating, the best indoor sport is not just sex, but sex in the airless attic under some wool blankets on the fourth of july. A pool player taught me that.

Sunny....all your doin' is beatin' around the bush, your romantic description is actually spot on, needing help somewhat with its essence....pool is life, its goings on occurances during play parallel our lifes actions as from moment to moment, if we slow down enough to smell the flowers. It's also why some days are good and others are.................?????????????? well you know, there's always another good thunderstorm/flower around the bend, BUT THEY ARE OUTSIDE :)

Umm... football, basketball, swiming, volleyball, indoor soccer, collegiate wrestling, and many more all indoors.

Also, cow tipping is a myth. Cows sleep laying down.

I would have to bet that sunny (whose very name is synonymous with the outdoors) has never fought a gamefish on the business end of a fishing rod, hunkered down in a blind and watched a small herd of deer graze in a forest clearing, ridden a motorcycle in the mountains on a beautiful fall day, sat on a bench in a park to watch and listen to the joyful sounds and sights of children playing, sat on the banks of a stream and listened to the sounds of the water gurgling over the rocks and down a small waterfall, etc. Shame.

There's a whole, wonderful life out there if you open yourself up to it!!!

Maniac (LOVES pool, but NOTHING beats the outdoors!!!)

Vitamin D, a pool player's favorite vitamin.

I'm with Sunny on this one.

Stay indoors and just check with your doctor about taking Vitamin D and you are good to go. Just be careful you don't overdose on it as that can get ugly real quick.

Oh yeah, and hit a pool ball or two to stay in stroke.

how'd you get that "tipless" nickname anyway?! :D

and Sunny - pool is something you play when golf is not available (on account of darkness, temps that require 5-6 layers of clothes, lol, 3 layers is no problem at all, or dangerous weather - I'm in the midwest where severe thunderstorms and tornadoes can hamper play). I'm in no way saying that golf cannot be played in those conditions though, just lessens the fun, and makes pool/billiards a viable alternative when they occur.

I will give you that the pool "culture" is quite interesting/entertaining, but I wouldn't want to be someone COMPLETELY immersed in it....variety is the spice of life. ;)

well i cant remember exactly who gave it to me cough(rusty)cough but it had to do with having 6 tips in 6-12 months falling off on 3 different cues and installed by 3 different cue makers lol. im glad to say ive been on the tipless bandwagon now for over 6 months so i guess it was just a bad string of luck

Hmmmm... I was thinking it was Gene who gave you that nickname, but I was absent during the conversation where that happened.... Gene was labeling folks on the chat, when he was updating scores... I walked in and it said "Tipless" and Dwight was busting a gut over it...

Rusty, were you in on that naming convention? I wouldn't be surprised if you are the one who told Gene to write that! We have Tipless and Gloveless and... What imaginations you guys have!!! :D
