Let's see your super shots

Ok, no matter what level of play you may be every single one of us has quite a few super shots in our closet that we'll never forget about. Shots that you made when you had to, and you honestly thought the shot out, but in all reality you know you were a bit lucky. To keep this from getting too heavy try to limit it to 3 shots and hopefully diagram them on one table.

Here are a few of mine. Granted, none of these are impossible by any means but I pulled them off when I had to. The first one is the cueball with the spot on it. It was hill/hill in a tournament and my opponent missed the 8 ball and left me straight in with the cue ball just a touch off the rail. I thought it out quite a bit thinking rail first etc... but the only option that made any sense was jacking up and drawing it straight back. Almost a full table length. I nailed it perfectly and it actually came back all the way and came off the rail a bit for me. For a monster stroker like Mike Massey this is probably a regular day at work. I was proud of this one though.

Second shot is cue ball A. I was still B class and instead of trying some sort of safety I looked at the guy I was playing and said "I'm gonna combo bank this 2 in the side. If I make it I'll quite playing pool." I made it but ended up being a liar by not quitting. I'm pretty sure I missed the next shot after that. hehe!! Again, not an impossible shot but a combo bank is always tricky. Nowadays I'd move the one down towards the rail next to the 3 and float whitey behind the 2.

3rd shot I was in a ring game and messed up position on the 5. I jacked her up and did a masse shot. The 5 went in like I had made that shot every day of my life. Again, not impossible by any means but still a damn good shot when the money is on the line. Oh, the 5 ball is a money ball in our ring games.

This was to win a rack of 8 ball. I botched position on the 8, and was left with what I thought was going to be a safety, until I saw the bank. The bottom left corner was completely blocked. I had to put some big draw on this for fear of the cue ball interfering with the 8 on its way to the pocket. Not an impossible shot, but I nailed it in the center of the pocket to put the finishing touches on a nice rack. People actually applauded, which I thought was kind of odd, but I liked it nonetheless.

Shot on the 5 ball had to have been in a game of "Goku." Do you play the kansai version where the 3,5,7, and 9 are all money balls, or the kanto version where only the 5 and 9 are the money balls?

I don't think it's possible to draw the cue ball anywhere close to where you displayed in the diagram.

The shot was from a couple of years ago, so I don't remember the EXACT angle I had, or exactly where the cue ball went. My diagram was probably fairly close to accurate, but not down to the inch. I'm certain that the cue ball never hit the end rail though.

Hill hill in a money set, got titty hooked when I rolled the cue ball too far. Spun the crap out if it, was playing it to error on the rail side. Hit it good and pocketed the 9.

Lenny, those are some nasty one pocket shots!

My best was a two rail kick last week with the OB sitting center table a diamond and a half out of the side pocket. I two railed it to cut it in the side. I just looked at the cut angle and drew a line to what diamond that would put the CB if the OB wasnt there and nailed it. Sorry no cue table. I'll work on it, it was worth showing.

Don't sweat it, man. Over the years the memories make them tougher and tougher when in all fairness they probably weren't out of the realm of possibility.

I saw Buddy Hall practicing on a table at the Lexington All-Stars and he pocketed a ball in the corner, the cue ball swung out towards the rail, the backspin kicked in and then zipped it up table. Totally went against anything I had ever seen before. I've tried it a billion times and can't do it. But, he's Buddy Hall with that smooth stroke of his. I defy anyone to find a stroke smoother and more controlled than Buddy's. I love watching him play. It's a lesson in and of itself.

Buddy's shot. This is a rough estimate of how it was set up. I'm sorry, I don't know how to make the beautiful curved lines to indicate the bending the cueball does. Anyway, you get the idea.

Yeah, we play the Kanto version of 5 and 9. We save the 3 and 7 as handicap balls for lower level players if they want to get in with us. Even then we rob them. hehe!! But hey, it's at least fair. I wouldn't feel right making a low B player only have the 5 and 9. Gotta give them something.

And before anyone wants to try and make me eat my words about hating handicaps, my dislike for handicaps are for tournaments and one on one gambling. I have no problem giving up a spot in a friendly ring game. No one is there trying to make the rent off of it.

Today I fell on the 3 like a total re-re, then said to my buddy "man, you're really gonna shit bricks when I cut this f-cker in, go around 3 rails, break out the cluster and fall straight in on the 5." ...Then I did it and was able to hold for the small window on the 6.

Tangent line play(s)

A couple years back:

Playing 8 ball-missed the breakout-nearly scratched-got bad. 8ball was laying good to carom into corner. Had free shot-3 railkick. Got lucky.

Very cheap 9ball ring game with buddies. We play wide open. Made wacky 9ball in big pocket.

My wacky 9ball ball safe. Hit the 3 with a 'thru the ball, small delay, force follow' stroke. Ended up with BIH 3-9(see 3-10) combo. I lost the 9ball on cuetable somehow drawing this up.--duh Oh crap-the lost 9b shows up on 'preview'/but not on live copy. Double duh

This is all I got for the last 10 years or so. I play bad-but have fun.

2 shots that I remember. A was pretty recent. Had an angle to head updable after making the 1, but there were balls in the way. So I hit the ball with a mini-jump hit with left spin, hit the top part of the 1, made it, jumped the 3 with the cue ball, and the left spin took it down for the 2.

B was a shot I did just for the heck of it at college. Probably have never tried it again but I remember it 15 years later  This was before I really knew how to play even.

A couple of years ago in the playoffs for the trip to vegas we were down by 8 balls coming into the 25th game.

Basically I needed to break and run, I broke made a ball and proceeded to run 6 more. Right from the start of the rack I saw that the 8 was dead to the corner but it was tight shape getting to it.

Before I shot my 7th ball I was a bundle of nerves I had a shot to the upper right pocket but I was on the wrong side of the ball to hold the CB for shape on the 8. I tried to use a bit of inside english and stop the CB in the area at the top of the E in Cuetable.

Alas, the CB drifted out past the 9 and I was supremely hooked. My opponent immediatly put his cue in the air to call for a ref and all my team mates let out a collective groan.

It took the ref a couple of minutes to get to the table so I carefully measured out the 3 rail kick and waited.

With the ref standing over the 8 watching for a bad hit, my team mates all turning purple from holding thier breaths I took one last look confirmed my aim point and shot.

When I hit it at first I didn't think I hit it hard enough but it went around the table off the side rail, hit the 8 clean and trickled into the pocket.

I just about peed my pants.

Edit: something happened between setting up the cuetable and posting it, the 8 and the 12 were frozen

Super.....

Very nice shot. You gotta luv when a 3railer goes.

Yours was made under a lot of pressure. Outstanding. I'll bet the other team turned some colors.

Take care
