Listen, I'm not gonna argue this on the internet. If you don't understand my position, the rightness therein, I can't be friends with you. Why wasn't my desire to not gamble and just practice honored? I certainly don't feel that I was treated like an honored guest.
If you owned a country club and Tom watson appeared and asked to play 9 holes of golf just for practice, I promise the entire staff and members would leap at the opportunity and not cheap hustle him in any manner.
He embarrassed and humiliated me and I didn't like it one bit. This episode may retire me from gambling. With guys like this it's just not fun anymore.

I was up for the whole weekend to play in the tournament. I was wondering why you did not play in the tournament, if for no other reason, just to get the speed of the tables down. I saw John play many matches and if memory serves me, he placed 9th in the tournament. He was playing well and knocked me out of the tourney.
I did not get there until saturday morning, so I just heard 3rd hand what went down on Friday. I didn't think it was a big deal, just some harmless gambling.
After the tournament was done playing on saturday night, I matched up with another guy to play some 1 pocket. He is a better 9 ball player and I ended up giving him 9 to 8 to play some 1 pocket. Neither one of us was sure how well the other one played, beleive me, if it was waaaay lopsided one of us would adjust. Well, after 4 games we had to adjust a lil. We both know each other, just never played 1 pocket.
Ok, I have been playing for a while but nowhere near your level. Nor have I seen the gambling that you have, how is it that you did not get a feel that you were in a bad game? Or, and be honest, did you make the game and wager thinking you were in a good game?
 
I don't know why I'm giving advice to Grady Mathews or why he would listen, but Grady should take a look at the video of him playing and adjust accordingly.

This isn't the first time Grady has gotten pissed and made errant posts... As I've stated in the past, I appreciate what you've done for the game, but please stop with the need for entitlement.

If you poised the game, your opponent accepted, and you lose - then lose like a man.

Grady Mathews is a living pool legend. His accomplishments and contributions to the sport are immeasurable. I guarantee you, that if you have watched any of the matches he commentated on for Accu-Stats, you probably learned something that has helped your game, won you a match, or made you some dough.

Grady is from a different era, that perhaps sadly, no longer exists in pool. And it's tough to let that go. In addition, I'm guessing the vast majority of you here know that Grady is now looking at things through a prism colored by recent events that would have brought most of us to our knees.

All of you will do and write your comments as you see fit. And that's as it should be. But, just maybe, before you post a demeaning post in this thread, no matter how deserved you think it might be, maybe you'll let it slide just this once.

I watched all the stream and listened to your tirade afterwords and I was embarrassed for you. You come on here and try to pull the wool over everyone's eyes believing that no one is going to know the full story. By the way, this isn't golf and your not Tom Watson.:mad:

This is kind of ridiculous. I simply cannot agree with Grady.

As such, if someone states that they don't play cheap, jacks up the bet, and then they get BBQed, who's fault is that?
People shouldn't complain if they get the game they ask for and get scalped on their own terms.

And i will never EVER feel sorry for someone and let them off the hook, when they would have been perfectly content taking my money had they won, cause if you are going to feel sorry for someone, WHY PLAY!?!

Is there some rule that says that legends are not allowed to lose to room owners, but instead can only be donated to? No.

It's quite simple really.
If people don't like losing, DON'T GAMBLE.
If gambling happens to be their living, then they really should have thought of a different form of income.

Sorry, but as far as pro pool players go, they've ALL stuck someone up at the table before.
Turnaround is fair play.

Good post Lou

I totally agree with Lou, I watched the match on ustream and Grady was obviously having some physical problems not to mention he recently lost his wife. I for one thing Grady has earned our respect and he will always have mine even though he may have overreacted in this case.

Grady

Grady chose to post on a public forum to which he isn't new. Obviously he knew a response was sure to be coming whether he had won or lost. He should be ashamed of himself for his self-righteousness. He spent most of his life hustling and didn't learn anything? Twice I witnessed him stopping in a local bar and beating the pants off of some local yokels in nine ball who he could have given 5 out and the break. That is why it's called "hustling" and not "honorable". Neither time did he tell the guys who he was and offer their money back. Besides, if he only lost a dime and then offered to play for 20K that surely means the dime was pocket change. Why is it so glorified when a hustler hustles someone (beats someone who never had a chance) and when the hustler gets hustled he becomes so indignant? Kind of like bullies. Ever hear of a bully that got his ass whipped by eveyone he tried to bully? Of course not; he gets know as a bully because he always makes sure his adversary is weaker than him.
 
Grady was one of the best one pocket players of all time. However, age will flatten a man and unfortunately, his best game is behind him. I enjoyed watching the video, but the level of play was not terrific. I don't mean that as a slam, but rather as an indication that as we age our level of play declines. I imagine that it must be a very frustrating feeling.

If I were Grady, I would look at teaching. Grady has an incredible amount of knowledge accumulated.
 
I could only hope to still be involved with the game when I am Grady's age.
I have watched and listened to the man for 20 years and I ain't going to stop liken him now........I am a big Earl fan also;).
